When will Corey have a break out game

Wasn't Rice a breakout game of sorts? It may have been just the Owls, but his numbers (a game-high 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting, two boards and three assists with no turnovers) were solid.

What made it a breakout performance to me is that Corey finally seemed to find his stroke. Up to then, I haven't been that impressed with his play, but if he can continue shooting like that, this team just might do something.

Honestly, I'm AFRAID that Rice was his break out game. He made some open 3s against a D that was letting us shoot from the outside. But he didn't look the slightest bit dominant or like a top notch guard who could take over a game. He hasn't been breaking down defenses or leading fast breaks. And most frighteningly, he hasn't shown me anything at all that makes me think he's a playmaker. Maybe he has the infamous Barnes handcuffs on him, but it doesn't seem like it, he's playing almost all game.

I want to like the kid - I love the flashes that Tristan has shown - but I'm starting to worry that he's not quite what everybody made him out to be. The comparisons to DJ and TJ are starting to sound ridiculous.

followed the Rice game with 16 pts and 9 rebs with some pretty passes and broke the press easily. What's not to like about the kid? I think he's just starting to find his stride.

....not to mention 4 assists, 3 steals and a block, and knocking down three from beyond the arc. High point scorer for the second contest in a row. I'm impressed.

Cory did good tonight. He seems to be getting more comfortable out there.

On a somewhat related note, is J'Covan Brown an enigma, or what? Four turnovers and three fouls in 9 minutes and it's not just the numbers, it's the way he goes about it at times. He is probably the biggest surprise to me on this team and i don't mean that in a good way.

Maybe I came off as too critical. I kept my eye on him most of the game tonight. He played hard, was able to dribble out of trouble a few times, and make open shots. He made some good entry passes too. One in particular to Wangmene late in the game that I liked. He doesn't turn the ball over and plays tough D.

I think he'll be a solid player this season similar to Bradley last year. I was just expecting (or hoping) that we were getting a dynamic point guard; someone who could get to the rim and make a tough layup or suck in help defenders and get open looks for others; someone who could take over late in games by continually penetrating on a tired defense. That's not really his game. I hoped that it was because I think you need that to win the tough games in conference play and in the tourney.... but I should clarify that I do think he is a good, solid player.

Rex.... I am with you on this. He personifies 'punk' and is
not what we need for the Texas face of basketball. A few
years back we had (and I forget his name) one, bigger, out
of north of Houston that was similar. Decent player, but
just a punk. Too bad that this kid's talent will be squandered.

today?

After a slow start, Corey Joseph has been a rock for Texas the past five or so games. He was superb today, netting a career-high 21 points, including that miraculous game-winner with 1.4 seconds to go.

Hard to tell what kind of season we're in for, but a road match with Michigan State and home games versus Arky and UConn should provide some insight before conference play gets under way.

Our 'Horns certainly are entertaining, I'll give 'em that.

Joseph really settling in now. That was his breakout game for sure yesterday.

Would like to see him get to the line more.

Just wanted to bump this thread--not out of spite toward J.Finley16, but in praise for Corey Joseph. He might not be flashy, he might not be as quick off the dribble as others, and he might not be the best foul shooter, but he has been remarkably productive and consistent since the Rice outing.

** Corey has scored in double figures in 10 of the past 14 games (starting with Rice).
** Corey's assist-to-turnover ratio for the past nine games is 3.2:1. That stretch includes @UNC, @MSU, vs. Arky, vs. UConn, vs. aggy and @KU.
** Corey did not have an assist in Saturday's game, but he did, for all intents and purposes, secure the win with eight-straight points, including a pair of 3-pointers.

It was Corey's first 3, which put Texas up by 7, that convinced me our 'Horns were going to win. He was walking the ball up the court and, as he approached the arc, no defender came out to guard him, so he calmly set his feet and let one fly (a la D.J. Augustin).

His follow-up 3-pointer a couple of minutes later (the buzzer-beater that miraculously banked in off the glass) was certainly more spectacular, but, to me, it merely confirmed that we were going to win.

I'll take one Corey Joseph over five Avery Bradleys any day.

I'm a fan of Cory Joseph, too, and think he's one of the most important players on this year's squad. His stabilizing leadership, I think, is his best contribution.

With that said, I think Avery Bradley gets a bad rap from Longhorn fans because of how the team flamed out last season. Was Bradley as good as advertised? Not according to his production. Was he as good as he believed himself to be? Not according to his play in the NBA. However, he was in a much more difficult position last year, in terms of displaying any sort of leadership/intangibles, then Joseph. Last year's team dysfunction is well-documented. Chief amongst that was lack of leadership from the expected leaders. For a freshman to come in to that environment is much different than Cory coming in to a situation where it's openly acknowledged that leaders need to be found.

Bradley was ultimately disappointing in relation to his press clippings, but there were a lot of other reasons why the team failed last year that were bigger than Avery. I would have loved it if he had come back this year. Him and Cory in the backcourt (aside from the supposed friction between them at Findley) would have been awesome.

I think Bradley was part of the problem last year...as was Hamilton, as was Brown, etc. We can agree for sure on that. Where we probably differ is that you think he was a major problem (however that might be quantified) and I see his attitude as more a result of lack of good senior leadership (and, honestly, good coaching leadership) from damion, dexter, and mason.

freshmen hotshots that show up on campus thinking they're the shizz are not altogether uncommon. when they're allowed to derail a team and an entire season, it's because there is a big leadership vacuum on the team. i love damion james, but he wasn't a strong leader for us...
