Born in '49, so I basically grew up with the space program. While there were detractors, most of the country was united in believing that we had to be the best in space, if not the first. It's interesting to recall what could be accomplished under leaders like Eisenhower and Kennedy. Makes me wonder if anyone will ever again be able to unite this country in doing something meaningful for the whold world.

Ask a kid (I am 46 now), I can remember the family sitting around our 25" console TV (pretty smokin TV for it's day) watching the Apollo lift offs, landings, and splashdowns. It really was a magical time!

I found it interesting how little we actually knew about the human body and zero g. It seems like common knowledge now, but they were literally making it up as they went.

"The docs are concerned that in space my eyes will change shape and I won't be able to see"

Wow.

I watched the first episode last night and really enjoyed it. It had a lot of news footage I'd never seen.

One thing's for certain, those astronauts had balls as big as church bells.

Can you imagine being Alan Sheppard sitting on top of that initial sub orbital launch pad? Hell, he was the one that finally had to say "let's light this candle"! It couldn't have filled him w/ confidence that the engineers couldn't bring themselves to actually hit the launch button.

Great men doing great things. I too wonder if this country will ever have a "common goal" we can all get behind.
