When should I go to Europe?

Some friends and I are planning a 2 week trip to Europe later this year. The plan as of now is Paris, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Oslo.

Originally, we were thinking last two weeks of August, but after looking around, flights are significantly cheaper (~$500) just a month later. Anyone lived/travel to these cities during mid to late September? What's the weather like? Still touristy? Still enough of a crowd for some 23 and 24 year-olds to have a good time?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I've been to Copenhagen in October and it was perfect. Just the right amount of tourists and the weather was gorgeous.

I suggest September or October. Crowds will be much lighter and the weather will still be good. Nice fall weather. If you can swing through Duesseldorf, I would highly suggest the stop. The Alt Stadt is one of best party places in all of Europe.

If you are going to Amsterdam try to go for the Queens birthday party. It is sometime in late April/Early May, I cant remember the exact day. It is a great party. All streets in the Centrum are packed.

Although Norway is one of my favorite countries, Oslo is one of the worst, uninspiring European capitals, not to mention, one of the most expensive.

Stockholm on the other hand is a beautiful city and has a real old European feel to it. Trust me on this one, Oslo vs. Stockholm... no contest, pick Stockholm.

That being said, although it looks like your itinerary won't allow for it, Western Norway (Bergen and the Fjord country) has some of the most beautiful scenery and landscapes i have ever seen.

Have fun, it will be pricey, but you only live once!

Oh, September to mid October best time to go.

couple more things..

your 23/24? Copenhagen had some of the most beautiful girls i have ever seen. You will have fun.

Paris will be the only city where you will have a language issue. Most Dutch, Danes, and Swedes all speak English pretty fluently.

Don't ignore Aarhus (Denmark). It is a BIG College Town. (Like Bergen, Norway) And BIG Danish college towns have large numbers of Danish college girls!!!

The last weekend in September is the last weekend of Oktoberfest too. A great place to start is then and in Munich. The weather gets cooler from that point.

fly into Frankfurt, head over to Munich,2 days, up to Berlin,2 days, over to Amsterdam,3 days then up to Stockholm, 2 days back to Amsterdam 2 days

, over to Paris 3 days, then back to Frankfurt(0 days straight to airport).

That would be lots of train time but some good highlights of that part of Europe. you could also skip the Stockholm leg and head over from munich to Vienna(Wien)/Prague.

another big college town: Lund, Sweden! Lund is just outside of Malmo, across the Oresund Strait, coming from Copenhagen

Very fond memories of Lund. Will re-inforce all those great stereotypes of Swedish women.

The plan right now is 2 weeks beginning on September 20.

Munich for 3 nights for Oktoberfest - This will be my third time to Munchen so I feel pretty comfortable here but if anyone has any Oktoberfest tips/suggestions that would be great.

Dusseldorf for 1 or 2 nights - Eurohorn, any recommendations on places to stay or can't miss bars/clubs?

Amsterdam for 3 nights - I've also been to Amsterdam so no problems there

Then we're heading to Denmark/Sweden. Bottlecap, since you've lived there any recommendations on where you would go if you had one week? Probably getting there on a Saturday morning and then flying out a week later. Aarhus, Copenhagen, and Stockholm are for sure's. We are looking for cheap places to stay and great places to party.

Thanks for all the help guys. No better place for information than HornFans.

I'm in the beginning phase of planning a trip over there as well. Unfortunately, as some of you have noted it's not the best time, but my trip has to be in June/July. A friend of mine is going to work in Malmo, Sweden for 5 months and that will act as a "home base" of sorts for my trip.

I love many of the suggestions here but as a few single 35 yr old dudes, I'm not sure the college towns would work for us, as much as I'd like to think we could pull it off, we probably can't(it sucks getting old)!

Since we will be in Malmo for a couple of days, we'll definitely hit Stockholm, Copenhagen, and Amsterdam. Seeing as it's a 12 day trip, I'm not sure where else to go. Being that close, I would think we could still visit some of Germany. I know we will be rushing in seeing some cities but what can we do. If your time in Germany was limited, what city or cities is a must see? Is hitting Prague a must see and wishful thinking on this trip? There's no guarantee I'll ever be back, although I'd like to think at some point I will get back.

Thanks for all the information so far. It's great info. Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Malmo is a fairly nice city and a good base point... you will find that during the summer months everyone is out, eating and drinking..

Skandinavians are living high on the hog these days!

i went last year to lake lugano, switzerland, verona (lake como), italy, bellagio (lake como), italy, and venice, italy. the trip was 4/19 through 5/1 and the weather was absolutely perfect.

that's the tricky thing about traveling in Europe.. It's tempting to try to do EVERYTHING. You'll here it all the time: Well if you are going to be in Copehagen, Stockholm is not far, then you might as well check out Helsinki, while in Helsinki, you might as well skip over to St. Petersburg. See what Russia is all about, And then Estonia is not far and that is an up and comer..

You may need to scale it back a bit, or you will find yourself on trains and boats, and exhausted for most of your trip. Just so you know, i hardly ever follow this advice much to my wife's dismay!

I second the try not to do too much. When I read the original post, my first thought was that you were trying to do entirely too much in two weeks. An d when I say too much, I mean waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much.

As for the time to go, it will always be happening in those cities regardless of when you go. I am a big believer in going outside of July and August when you can. September in each of those places will be perfect.
