When should I get a 1080p HDTV?

I have 2 HDTVs both are 1080i/720p. One is a 30" Samsung SlimFit CRT that works good but the armoire that it is in can fit any 37" LCD flat panel and some 42" flat panels (based on the measurements).

I am happy about it so no hurry but do wish the tv was bigger. I don't want to get a blu ray any time soon mainly b/c I have too many dvds that I don't want to do the switch yet.

So if I am not watching blu ray DVDs, when will 1080p be broadcast on the cable (TWC, DISH, DirecTV)? Until then I'm in no hurry to upgrade.

I realize that but I have a Denon S101 and a Sony Dream System. Both have dvd players on them. I don't really want to buy another dvd player.

Honestly I am happy watching a DVD (420p) on my HDTV. I realize that I am limited to the 420p of the DVD but that still looks great to me.

By the time cable/satellite is broadcasting programming encoded in 1080p, you'll be able to get a 42" set for half what you can get it for now, if not less. It'll be a long, long time...

If you can play 1080i, but not 1080p, you really can't display 1080i.

So when you watch 1080i, you are not getting 1080 lines of interlaced resolution. It scales it to 720 lines of resolutoin. This means that while your TV can work with 1080i input, it does not display at 1920x1080 interlaced. It scales to the native resolution on your set.

If you are happy with your current TV then no need to upgrade but if you are ready to make the jump to a new set, then you are best to just get 1080p, yes you will probably not notice much of a difference between 720 and 1080p outside of 6 feet FOR THE SIZE TV YOU ARE LOOKING FOR, but you are also starting to see most of the manufacturers starting to go only 1080p in these sizes and above.

I wouldn't buy a 1080p set until you have room for a display larger than 50", 58-60" preferred. Anything smaller and you will not notice the difference in resolution unless you sit a 4-6 ft.

I made a statement directed at the size of TV he was looking for 37"-42" that is why I said that he would not notice a difference at the distance I stated. Read a little more into my post before you try and discredit what I have stated.

everyone I've asked has said you can't really tell the difference between 1080i vs 1080p; i have a 50" DLP 1080i and was thinking of upgrading but didn't after asking some folks at best buy. granted, take that for what it's worth.

If it de-interlaces properly there is virtually no difference between 1080i and 1080p. Read this Home Theater Magazine article to learn more. www.hometheatermag.com/gearworks/1106gear/index.html

FJJP info is incorrect 1080i is not 720p. Now there are some 720p sets that have a 1080i inputs but rescale it to 720p. Make sure it is a 1080i set and not a 720p "with 1080i input."

My personally opinion is 1080p is basically a way to get HDTV prices up from ~$1K to ~$2-3K.
