When does Brown get to start?

I know what you're saying, but...you have a winning combination with the Senior Balbay starting and J'Covan off the bench. It's a great combo. As many hoops coaches have said, "It's not who starts, but who finishes."

Hook'em!!!

I endorse all the responses in this thread. J'Covan has been off the hook the past couple of games, but please don't overlook Dogus' contributions.

Balbay also came up huge today, particularly early in the second half when the rest of the team was struggling--Dogus got a couple of steals and converted them into buckets. He also played his usual suffocating defense and combined well with Brown to help put the game out of KU's reach.

Truly, Rick has found the magic formula for this team. They are playing with tremendous chemistry and everyone seems to have accepted his role. Instead of competing with one another for minutes, they are competing with their opponents for victories.

general.... seriously??!!

For a guy with 50000000 posts you don't know **** about allocating playing time!

Barnes has a winning combination and you want to F*** it up!

Basketball at the championship level is played by 7 to 9 guys on a TEAM. They need rest, very few are at their peak playing 40 minutes. You do not want to put in 3 or 4 subs and have no scoring punch. And Brown is on the floor at crunch time.

Maybe you should post on the girls bb site.

.....and why should he post on the girls site.....he asked a simple question.....why not answer as others have w/o throwing rocks????

No need to alter the lineup as long as they are effective and accepting of their team role...

I think its an Ok question. I'm a big supporter of the offense revolving around Cove more. I think he brings a scoring dimension from the guard position that we have to have. Joseph and Balbay are both complementary guards who can't create points for several possessions in a row. College teams need that guard who can take over for a stretch when defenses get tough. But I like how Barnes is starting with the defensively stronger guards to set the tone. Cove is like Manu or Jason Terry coming off the bench. It will be interesting to see how Barnes plays final possessions in close games. It had been Joseph getting the call (UNC!!), but I wouldn't be surprised if Barnes calls Cove's number next time. He creates better..... he just has to cut those charges out of his game.

The JB substitute for JH is a lethal combo. And during the game when both are in, it's a another lethal combo.

6th man, 6th man, 6th man !!!!!

that 18-3 run to start the game was awesome.

But implying that not starting JCB is what led to KU's great start is asinine.

I'm not, i was responding to the idiotic post from like mike. my original op was just that brown deserves to start. you start your best 5, period. you have unlimited subs. the chemistry argument lm made is bs and the bad start proves it. Balbay couldnt/wouldnt start for any other team in the big xii.

Agreed that the 6th man is a most important component to a winning team. You need a spark off your bench and if yu sat Balbay and started Brown your choices would be Balbay, Lucas, Hill
or Wagemene. Lucas has lost confidence in his shot and the other 3 are role players not known for their offense.Rick has the perfwt mix going now so why mess with waht's working?

General.... who says you start your best 5? The Mavs don't. They play a defensive specialist for short minutes at off guard to start. Where have we seen that.

As a coach you try to have the most advantageous match ups during as much of the game as possible. Since very few guys are able to play forty minutes, you need 7 to 9 guys in a rotation. You try to play combos that maximize you talent. That means the second quarter group needs a scorer or two.

I think it's more important to have the best five on the floor during the last 7 to 10 minutes, when the game is on the line.

And, Balby has taken a number of the opposition top scorers out of the game. His defense is the best on the team if not in the Big XII.

Total minutes , not starting, is a more telling indicator of status.

This is a good discussion. Sure they won, but I do not agree that b/c of this they should not looking at shuffling the line-up. Anybody that watched the entire game Saturday would have noticed that there was an obvious change in the ability of the horns to get hte ball down court and feed the ball into the post when Balbay went out. Joseph and Brown were both doing a great job of this. multiple times I saw Balbay with the ball on the break and with about zero clue of what to do with it. The only time he ever seems to make the right play is when he takes it at the hoop and lays it in. He does this maybe once/game.

Now I am not saying that Brown needs to start in front of Balbay. Balbay certainly offers a tremendous amount in terms of his defense. He creates turnovers and can really wear out an opponents starter.

I think that Barnes needs to be really mindful of not putting Balbay out there unless he has 4 other scorers on the court. Can't have Hill and Balbay on the court too often IMO. It may work out now and again but more often than not it is going to cost you points.

My friend who hadn't followed UT basketball much but knows the game pretty well has watched the UConn, OU, and Kansas games with me.

His first comment about Balbay, about 10 minutes into the UConn game, was "No matter what else he might do well, why do we even play a guy who won't even take a wide open jump shot?" I mentioned that he'd been shut down Kemba almost completely to that point and he was like "But if a guy can be 15 feet from the basket and you still don't even have to guard him..."

By the 2nd half of the OU game his comment was "Ok, now that I've watched us more I can see why we play Balbay a lot, our offense has far better flow and execution when he's in the game."

This shouldn't be an issue of Brown vs. Balbay. Sure, Dogus was all-world tonight and Cove was a bit off, but there will be days--just like Saturday--when we need JCB to step in and do his thing.

Dogus got the majority of the minutes tonight, but there have been several occasions this year in which, either due to poor play or too many fouls, he had to ride the pine and Brown got to shine.

Also, as Saturday proved, these two make a great combination. They were on the floor together for perhaps the most pivotal stretch of the KU game, when Texas turned a 43-39 deficit into a 51-47 advantage. Furthermore, it allowed Joseph to take a break; when he reentered the game, he scored eight-straight points to widen the margin to 11 (59-48).

The great thing about this team is everybody has a role and those roles overlap, so if someone is having an off night, someone else can step in and step up. For example, Matt Hill wasn't quite as sharp tonight as he's been recently, but Wangmene was able to fill in and provide solid post-up defense while snagging a couple of tough rebounds and converting all four of his foul shots.

Even Jai Lucas, who's been in a bit of a slump, will have some big moments before this season is over.
