When did you become a Horn Fan?

It's the offseason, and conversation is needed. Do you remember when/where/why your Longhorn fanship began?

I was a high school freshman in 1994, in Dallas for some band competition, and we watched James Brown, who was then just a freshman himself, lead Texas to a victory over the sooners. Later I saw some ou fans flipping off a passing car full of Horns, and my love of UT (and hate of ou), began.

Later on they kicked the **** out of my hometown Bears, who I disliked for many reasons, and that sealed the deal. I was in the stands for that one, and I remember asking someone why the band kept playing 'working on the railroad' over and over. The James Brown years were pretty much my introduction to Longhorn football. What about you?

What Texas Jack said. It was genetic

Well I guess I did have just a light dusting of it in my genes, as my closest uncle became an undergrad in 92. Right before he graduated he brought me down to see a game, and Austin blew my mind. Back then you could get a ticket on the cheap, even right as you walked up to the stadium at gametime, and then sit just about anywhere you wanted. Times have changed...

sat down one day in november to watch Ricky smash the record. i was a freshman in high school. the next game i watched was Major tearing Stanford apart. been a fan ever since.

My Dad, Uncle and Brother all graduated from UT. Dad's wise and steady influence about UT football (and the Dallas Cowboys) in the early '60's while I was at his knee, brought my love of football forward and eventually UT football over all others.

The first year I remember steadily watching games with him and knowing what was going on was 1963 when I was 10. I still remember two games in particular from that season: UT's impressive victory over #1 ou and Bud Wilkinson 28-7 and UT beating Roger Staubach & Navy 28-6 for the MNC.

What a damn fine year to start one of your life-long passions!!!

Earl has always been my favorite UT player....

My nephews also went to Westlake with his sons..

10 years old watching Earl's senior year. Plus I had a 1977 SWC Champs orange and white beanbag chair. Deluxe.

My dad is Class of '57 and continued his education for several years after that, off and on until 1982. When I was a kid he was usually either working or going to class/studying so the weekends were the only time that I could really spend with him. I remember being probably 4 years old and sitting out on the brick patio in the backyard of our old house. My dad would cook up some BBQ and had a portable black and white TV that he would turn the sound down on, to listen to the radio call instead. It's probably my favorite memory. Sitting under a big oak tree on a perfect fall afternoon, hanging with my dad, watching Earl run over everyone that got in his way. Nothing better than that for a little kid. I instantly feel in love with the Longhorns and have been a huge fan ever since.

I am a third-generation University of Texas graduate. I've been a Longhorn from conception. There was never any other school for me.

I love The University of Texas with every fiber of my being, even though they do some pretty dumb stuff from time to time.

I guess I was just born that way. My dad never attended the University, hell he was a blue-collar worker at an aluminum plant. But I will never forget that feeling as a boy...it was like Christmas Eve watching the Longhorns every Saturday and then the Cowboys on Sunday back in the late 70's early 80's. That cool autumn breeze and TEXAS football. What else is there?

I've always been a fan. Both my parents went to Texas, as well as a cousin and an uncle. My grandmother lived at 1918 Speedway, across from the old intermural field (where Jester is now.)

I never knew there was any other school to root for!

It was Nov 10, 2001. I grew up rooting for Penn State. But on that fateful November day, my parents got tickets to watch us play KU and see my sister who was in LHB. I had just started playing trombone for my high school band after playing trumpet for three and baritone for one. That game was nothing particularly special, the game was 59-0 and there were some funny KU students who drove to the game and were betting how bad they would lose. But the LHB trombones played Bone Tell at the 4 corners of the stadium and right in front of me. From then on, there was no doubt.

As an 8 year old living in New Jersey in late summer 1969, I learned my family would be moving to Texas the following year. I became interested in all things related to Texas, such as cowboys, oilwells, etc. Then in December, the first college football game I remember watching was the Texas/Arkansas game. I became a Longhorn fan at that point. When it was time for me to choose a university to attend, there was only one choice...No place but Texas.

when Curry dropped that f'n punt.

no ****

that was my first Longhorn game and I knew that I was scheduled to enroll here the next fall.

I am the literal bad luck charm for team.

Stay away from me in a lightning storm if Texas is playing.

TomT, uhh dude, I don't think you want the crushing burden of being the bad luck guy we all blame for stuff like Curry's fumbled punt, Pittman's fumble vs. tOSU, Jammal's fumble vs. ou, etc.

I was actually there for both Rose Bowls, so I am somewhat redeemed, but my record in the Cotton Bowl is miserable.

Yes, I was there for 15-15 in the rain and the Miami game in the arctic blast.

TT - I too was at the CB for the miserable 15-15 monsoon rain game vs. blow-u. Gawd, it was not only horrible conditions for the players and fans, but it was a game the Horns could have won. I really thought people were going to die that day due to a direct lightning strike on the stadium. The lightning was constant and all around that stadium for a long time - it was just a miracle no-one was hit.

Bad memories from that day but not because you were there....

BTW.... you didn't happen to be at the CB in Oct. 1976 vs. ou for that disgusting 6-6 tie game? I am looking for someone else to blame besides Ivy Suber

From conception! I was born in Austin to two die-hard Longhorn fans who never attended UT but wished they had. When I was 2 and people would ask me how old I was, instead of holding up my index and middle fingers, I would give them a

Since I was a little boy in west Texas in the early 50s. After all, the University of Texas was our state university, and everybody on Earth associated The Eyes of Texas with the state of Texas. And after listening to all the guff from Oklahoma when they were on their 47-game streak, it was great to see DKR come to Texas and turn things around. And I've been a Longhorn fan ever since. I did not attend UT - USAF Academy, Class of 1968 - but have followed the Horns fervently. Every service academy graduate has another school he identifies with - normally his home state university - and for me, being a native Texan, it was an easy choice.

You are making a good point...if there was ever a good chance to get hit my lightning at a Texas game, that was it, and I survived.

Two guy behind me had and oil lease or well or something petroleum based wagered on the game, I was wearing a black felt stetson(NOBODY wore orange back then) and it bled black rain drops onto one one of the dude's wive's white pants the whole game.

She bitched, I drank - where were we going to go? - I sure as hell wasn't going to take my hat off for this Okie's wife.

I actually think we screwed OU in that game some how on an out of bounds call....and the Akers running a short side sweep by pitching the ball back 6 yards on a goal line play.....

Wettest football game...EVER
