What's up with recruiting?

Here is the List which doesn't look bad at this point, but I guess after last year there will be concern about decommitments. A lot may depend on how the season goes next year.

There is really nothing that can't be corrected with a season when we beat OU and finish ahead of aggy in the end, especially if it's in the top-5. I don't think we are hearing of systemic problems like HS coaches being upset and stuff like that which we heard during the Akers and Mackovic years. The poor recruiting is simply because we have pretty much sucked for 3 years in a row.

But we have hardly any margin of error. Cannot have a silly defense, an inept offense, or even much of bad scorelines next year (even with a good W-L record) or the recruits' doubts will persist. There are a lot of question marks on Mack's current staff's ability to present a topnotch product right now. They have a lot to prove and not much margin of error.

I don't remember ever losing that many head to head battles with atm.

Ags had a lot of success this year when they weren't projected to do well. Heisman winer, big win over OU. We were looking good then came WVU and OU and the struggles, lack of a D, and so on, ended the season poorly but did manage to come from behind to win the bowl game. Still, the kids look at aggy doing well in the SEC verus us in the middle of the B12, blowouts at OU....not good.

Having the allure of an SEC school in the state has most likely changed the recruiting landscape in Texas for the foreseeable future. Something even the LHN wont be able to overcome.

It's analogous to the day the music died.

The allure of an SEC team that butt stomped ou in the Cotton Bowl. The same ou team that totally routed the Horns two years in a row. And three mediocre seasons in a row is very bad.

If we don't win win 10+ games this season the recruiting trails could become difficult like we haven't seen in many years.

Its not just what Texas does; it's also what TAM does in comparison to what they did last year. If the maroon glow lessens, and the burnt orange shines brighter, the disparity will go away and things will be more like you want them to be.

I don't follow it too closely, never understood the reason people follow it so closely, but to each their own.

How is recruiting looking a month later?

Out of fifteen commits as of 4/13/13, nine of them are three stars according to Rivals but the usual pumpers think all is well....

Gents-
Star ratings on HS JR players mean nothing.
showes how little the recruiting experts know. Look at the other offers for these 3 star recruits..you'll see what I mean.
Also watch how they magically turn into 4 & 5 stars once the experts see the offers they get.
The latest 3 star commit, Roberts....offers from, Bama, TAMU, OU, Mich, UCLA, FSU.
Bystander-
And me being happy about beating out these offers somehow makes me a pumper? Really, or are you so negative and such a complainer that no matter what happens you can put a negative spin in it.
I swear I keep thinking I've seen it all on this board and then whamo! the level of whining by the gloomers far exceed the absurdity of the so called pumpers.
Dude, if you make me pick a side, I have no problem joining the "pumpers", you Longhorn Atheists seem to be in a wierd assed funk.
No thanks.

Good grief-bystander. UT is ranked #1, your comment makes no sense.
So the pumpers think everything with recruiting is good because UT is the highest ranked?

That #1 ranking is quite misleadiing, and is mostly because we have twice or 3 times as many recruits committed than others. On average quality, we are barely about top-15. If we don't land at least 3 more top-100 players, we won't finish in the top-3. We would probably end up in the top-10 but not as high as we have in most of the past few years. But not a bad recruiting class or anything.

I always look for difference-makers. On the basis of the current ratings of the players, I am not sure if we have landed such top-50 quality difference-makers.

I should say that I am not a big believer that rounding them early before the senior season is a good thing. It has only made us miss some good ones, and I don't know if we could not have got some of the good ones we got, had we not got them to commit early. I thought we would ease up on it a bit based on recent experiences, but may be the coaches don't feel that it has hurt us much. It seems we are continuing to round them up early.

I look at it like this. Their stars are earned against other HS talent (DUH!!!!). But what level. 5 star future D1 talent are not constantly lining up against 5 star future D1talent. That makes it a little hard to tell what is gonna happen when line up against a team that is ALL 4-5 star talent. Some develope, some do not. We should all know this very well. Hard to find players that are still growing and developing as opposed to players that have already reached their potential. Recruiting is a crap-shoot. We should just welcome the newbies to the University, wish them well, and hope they reach their full potential. Quit all this praising till they have actually done something. Ofcourse, good coaching would help.

Hysterical... now the ratings mean nothing except if we're #1 which anyone should know is a cumulative rating. It is used by extremely biased folks if they are #1 and downplayed by others with small recruiting classes who immediately point to the average rating.

Lot's of rationalization and watering down of the standards. The gloating about four and five star players in the past ten years around here was constant. You remind me of another fan base east of here....

bystander...I have been sayin that for years. Alot of players peak in HS. Being #1 in February means nada. Also, ib believe alot of our issues is the prima-donna attitude in the AD. We dont have to out-coach anybody, we have 4-5 star athletes. We will just out-talent them. I am all for welcoming players to the UT family, but lets see what they can do with 100,000 people in the stands on Saturday afternoon/night before we start making room in the trophy case. So far, these new recruits have done nothing except look good against HS talent.

A buddy of mine and I have a formula. So far it has been pretty accurate (unfortunately). If we recruit 20 4-5 star athletes, 4 will live up to expectations, 4 will contribute, 4 will eventually transfer (probably for playing time), and the remainder will never play a down at UT for whatever reason.

In all fairness, this is not exclusively a UT issue. But we see it because our eyes are on Texas. Coaching helps too.

You know what... . I think for the first time in many years... I am not going to ride the recruiting roller coaster. I have followed the 2014 class a bit but it just seems like this process is getting crazier and crazier each year. You know what... It take that back. I am sure it has always been a circus but with all the social media, it's a new game. We get constant updates on who is thinking what and information from "a reliable source". I don't need my inner fanatic stressed out all year. Its bad enough during the regular season.

I mean... its not like the past years haven't had high ranking grades from the critics, just to sputter and not produce on game day. Hopefully my decision will result in a more peaceful summer, fall, winter, and spring. Consider this my departure from the ride as I wait for the review after signing day.
