Whats so great about the IPOD?

Time to get a new MP3 player and I am considering the IPOD. Is the main difference between it and the others is its massive storage? What was the controversy concerning the battery? It was something along the lines of it not being able to be replaced. Where is the best place to get one?

Thanks

The iPod is the best portable mp3 player on the market mainly due to its interface and design. It is elegant, easy-to-use and well-made.

The battery is not made to be replaceable by the user, but for $99 Apple will do it for you (or you can do it yourself if you are technologically inclined and don't mind taking the cover off the unit). It takes a loooooooong time for the battery to wear out, though, so you should be OK.

There are many other mp3 players on the market now, and some are decent. But none come close to the iPod, as far as I'm concerned.

I'm told you can replace the battery yourself for $50. A buddy of mine has had his iPod for over a year and hasn't had to replace the battery yet -- and he listens to it at work all the time, in his car (in lieu of a CD player) and uses a recharger thing in his car that's always on.

I got mine in November -- and love the thing.

I too don't understand what is so great about the ipod. To me the thing is too big to be carrying around. Is it just its massive storage why people love it so much? I guess that and like someone already mentioned its easy to use interface.

Now can you put any MP3's on the ipods or only MP3's from Apples website? I have heard that some places are now starting to copyright their mp3's with their own players type thing...

It can understand why you would needor want one unless you travel, commute via public transpo, or walk around a lot where you can throw it in your bag.

I've had mine for 2 years, no battery issues. is a deck of cards to big to carry around? if so....get the mini.
the storage is crucial, ask anyone who has less than a gig adn they will agree that it's not really as fun hearing the same songs repeated and then to circumvent that you have to managemnet the content all the time. I have over 7 days of continious music on my iPod. I rarely here the same song in short repetition.

form factor...nothing compared in design.
the UI is sweet as is Itunes once you get the hang of it.

spend the $, do it right, do it once.

I'm looking at the following

IPOD and IPOD Mini
Zen Micro
Dell DJ and it's mini version

Can get discounts through friends working for Apple and Dell. Ruled out Rio Carbon because of posts by users experiencing hdd troubles after a few months of use.

To answer your question - What is so great about the IPOD?

It's a status symbol. It's a "piece of jewelry." It's expensive for what you get.

BUT - it is as close to perfection as you will find right now.

I have the Dell DJ and must say that I like it. At the time, it was $175 less than the Ipod before they moved their 20GB to 299 from 399. The players are comparable except in status but one big plus is that ITunes is a zillion times better than Music Match. Another con to the IPod is that each accessory is >$29 while each is about 10 - 15 from Dell. Car charger/car converter/arm bars, etc. At least they were when I bought mine. So if you buy something to go with it, you are paying $20 more for each item and that can add up. Massive storage is not a benefit for Ipod bc it is same for all players (except 40GB). Also battery life (was 8 hours, now 12 hours) is not as good as Dell (20 hours).

I just want an mp3 player that lets me view my music how I have it sorted on my computer, i.e a wndows type hierarchical structure, not sort it based on the id3 tags, have of which are wrong.

Archos is the only brand I know of that makes such a player and their largest player is 20GB and they have no such thing as customer service.

I went with the mini so I can use it while working out. It's pretty impressive so far. I need to figure itunes out and get everything organized.

iPod is the most well designed and user friendly MP3 player on the market. Once you play with one you will see. DELL and the others are not comparable.

I got my clients and iPod mini for xmas this year and everyone of them said it was "awesome."

I have been using Apple products for almost 20 years. This is the first main stream product that Apple has really had and it is a huge hit.

Buy some Apply stock while your at it. It has already doubled in the last two months and the iPod is just the beginning of how an Apple product will be in almost every home in the next several years.
