What's Left for 2010

Somebody else can provide the exact #'s but I assume we take 24-25 in 2010.

So far we have (names + LSR rank):
4 DBs (Dixon 5, Byndom 23, Jackson 50, Phillips 81)
4 WR/TEs (Terrell 21, Harris 58, Apo 93, Jones NR)
3 DTs (Bible 12, Cotton 26, Dorsey NR)
2 LBs (Benson 13, T Jackson 65)
2 QBs (Wood 14, McCoy 43)
2 OL (Hopkins 17, Espinosa 18)
1 RB (Shead 28)
1 DE (Daniels NR)

The next 5-6 would presumably include:
1 LB (Hicks OOS, Nelson 8 - offered; Hines 86)
1 WR/TEs (Cobbs OOS, Reed OOS, Da. White 4 - offered)
1 DE (Jeffcoat 1, Wilson 3 - offered; Lee 98)
1 DB (A White 19 - offered)
1 RB (Seastrunk 2 - offered; D Williams 7)
1 OL (Matthews 6 - offered; Washington 9 - not offered)

Looking at the depth charts I would think LB was a greater need than DT, but clearly the coaches know better. Interesting a few years of recruiting midget WRs, now we are after giants. Should be a godd mix on campus for GG.
Still would like to pick up both White(s) and a stud DE. The rest is cake.

I think the class will be closer to 20 than 22. Just based on what Mack said about the 2009 group. But we could be looking at a couple of extra transfers. We may also have some going on to a medical 'ship.

1 or 2 more LBs. if both Hicks and Nelson commit.
The OOS Cobbs and Reed are good enough you take them no matter what. The same with Jeffcoat.
The Dunbar three WR White, Ath. Favors and CB Sanders. Seastrunk as a first choice at RB. Two RBs in this class regardless. Matthews on the OL.
One more QB. It seems like we are going to a least get a visit from Montana.

At least 20-22, maybe more. I expect several transfers, especially at WR, based on #'s.

Lache Seastrunk (5-10/185/4.4), RB, Temple
Jackson Jeffcoat (6-5/240/4.6), DE, Plano West
Corey Nelson (6-0/215/4.5), LB, Dallas Skyline
Jake Matthews (6-5/275), OL, Fort Bend Elkins
Reggie Wilson (6-4/240/4.8), DE, Haltom City Haltom
Darius White (6-3/190/4.5), WR, Fort Worth Dunbar
Adrian White (6-0/180/4.41), CB, DeSoto
plus the OOSers

these guys would be nice

Two, maybe three off of that list, but I'm afraid we whiff on Seastrunk and Jeffcoat. I wouldn't be surprised to see us get the Whites, and maybe one OOS player. I'd love to see us get Wilson, but I'm not holding my breath on that one...you figure sooner or later, Stoops is gonna get at least one of his Texas targets. I do figure us to get two running backs not named Seastrunk, and perhaps two more linebackers, and if everything breaks right, the one offensive lineman left that Texas wants.

Coolhorn, and fellow internet message board speculator,

Do you have any basis for your predictions or just guessin?

I'm not speaking for coolhorn, but I do agree with him on the pessimism on Jeffcoat and Seastrunk. My reasons, briefly:

Jeffcoat - the family connections just don't seem to be lining up right for us. I am NOT implying anything shady here, as I might have when bringing up "family connections" with other recruits. Without having any sort of connection, my impression - based merely on listening/reading current info and nothing else - I think right now it's USC, then OU then Texas.

Seastrunk - nothing at all concrete, just an uneasy feeling that I've learned to get with recruits of his style, both on and off field. Guys who like to "enjoy the process" as the phrase goes fall outside of the comfort zone of our recruiting staff, who just aren't inclined to engage in drawn-out and possibly fruitless pursuits.

It's one thing to sink resources into OOS guys like Kennard and Kirkpatrick when you've got your class in place and you can attribute at least some of the rejection to geography. It's another to do the same with a guy just up the road who may (or may not) be jacking you around for the fun of it.

In other words, I don't think Mack and his staff want any part of another Martellus Bennett situation.

As for Lache's "on-field" style, he doesn't fit the mold I've seen our offensive coaches go after. For whatever reason(s), we either won't or can't get dynamic slasher types with any consistency. Ramonce Taylor and Jamaal Charles are obvious exceptions.

There's not much science behind my pessimism, just intuition. I'll be really happy to be wrong.

I feel better about Lache than I did a few days ago. In fact, I'm starting to feel a little optimistic....

In answer to what I know, and when I knew it...I have some, but not a lot more inside information than anyone else speculating here.

Everything I've read to a point indicated Jeffcoat liked the land thieves, but I think USC has really come on with him lately, and I don't think it's a slam dunk that he winds up in Norman. I don't think Texas has blown him away to this point, which is even more reason why I hope we're seriously going after the Haltom defensive end and perhaps the other Okafor in Houston.

There might have been a point where Seastrunk really liked UT, but I understand from some Temple folks I know and trust that he's very enamored of both USC and LSU these days. That could change, but we haven't had a lot of luck with guys lately who are hearing sweet nothings from those two schools.

Beyond that, I don't claim to know any more than anybody else posting here...I just read the tea leaves and listen to the voices in my head occasionally.

Suchomel from OB was stating that he expects Traylon Shead to be offered at the 28th Jr Day. This would work or me. I want him or DJ Jones and his career average of 9.8 yds/carry and a TD every 7.6 carries, sits well with me.

I'm predicting we have 18 commits by the 1st week in March (0 inside info, just my opinion).

What I'd like to see with the rest of this class:
- atleast 2 of the top 4 in state (from Jeffcoat, Seastrunk, Wilson, White) -> 1 from offense and 1 from defense
- Hicks and Cobbs (both)
- 2 RBs: is Dontae Williams being recruited as a RB?
- 2 OL: Matthews and Washington - Ags would puke w/ losing Matthews and perhaps Shead
- Speed: at WR, DB, and LB

Is that asking for too much?

I don't follow this nearly as much as y'all do, so, I apologize in advance if this is obvious but....

What about this next Okafor guy.?

1. Is he related to the Okafor that we just signed?
2. Is he anywhere near as good?

"Desean Hales, DJ Monroe, Kirkendoll, Collins "

I should have been more specific - we don't get those types of guys for our backfield.

I don't know yet how we're going to use Hales - of course, he's a guy that we got in on kind of late, and only via very strong urgings from outside the program.

The other guys are receivers, so I wouldn't consider them in my criteria. I liked the way Collins played this past year, but we haven't seen him used the same way that Florida uses Percy Harvin, for example. I have no idea if Monroe will even make it past the Spring semester, and I don't see Kirkendoll as anything more than a pretty solid possession receiver so far.

I think the main reason we don't get the dynamic slasher types is that our running game doesn't value them much. Davis and Brown have always preferred bigger RBs, going back to their days at UNC.

Davis has done some really nice stuff with our offenses, particularly in QB play, but aside from the year and half with Vince, we've never had a particularly imaginative running game designed to take advantage of those dynamic slasher types.

And I pledge to stop using the phrase "dynamic slasher types" right now. Maybe I'll call them "kittens on meth" from here on out.

i don't think we "don't go after" slasher types. i think fewer slasher types are good enough to make the speed and strength transition to college ball. that doesn't make RT and JC "obvious exceptions," imo. It makes them two of the few slashers in texas good enough to go after.

slashers have to be exceptional to make the transition to college. i think there have been very few in texas high school in the last 5 years that have been very successful at the college level. that doesn't make it a strategy on the part of texas. it makes the pool of recruits very small.

i could be wrong, but maybe someone has a list of RBs from texas in the last 5 years that we haven't gone after that have ended up being very good at the college level... thanks

#'s are getting interesting:

12 commits
10 offers out, I believe (+1 supposedly out or coming to Shead)

Jr Day this weekend will have about 20 players w/o offers coming in (not including Cobbs, Matthews, & Shead).

So do more follow Byndom and commit now before missing their chance or do we simply not offer much of anyone else this weekend?

Interested that we are still bringing in a # of DL. Hard to imagine taking more than 2 DTs in this class. Thoughts?

We'll take a 3rd DT if the guys we're bringing in pass the in-person eval.

The real dilemma is at DB, OL, WR. More good players than offers available, by far.

We've recruited a ton of running backs who weren't necessarily big power backs. I don't know if you want to call them slashers, but surely some of the following fit the mold: Jerrell Wilkerson, Fozzy Whitaker, Selvin Young, Vondrell McGee, Jamaal Charles, and Tre Newton. We've recruited more of these types than the pure power backs.

Maybe we are running a pass heavy offense. (But then we could get into the chicken and the egg argument, so I digress)

I think the main problem is that the RB talent in Texas the past couple years just hasn't been that great. We passed on Calhoun a couple years ago in favor of Hills, presumably for academic reasons. We tried to go OOS and get Scott, but that didn't work out.

Last year we passed on Michael, who appears to be a great talent, but for reasons unknown to me UT and other programs seemingly backed off of him. Also my understanding is that our coaches love Whaley, and had him as their #1 RB in state last year. So from the coaches perspective they got the guy they wanted.

Things are looking good for Trayon Shead. He is the besy RB I have seen in person since Cedric. He reminds me a little of another small school product, David Overstreet.

WTF? Has anyone in the history of schlorship limits ever taken three QBS? (not counting JuCos)

Look at the date on my post. At that time we only had one QB commitment. If you are going to toss insults you need to know WTF you are talking about.
