What we need to address before OU

ok... after the irby injury, i couldn't help but think what a shambles our TE position is in. it's one of the things that probably won't be really fixed this year. then during the game that idiot halftime announcer kept saying we have no chance against ou. well maybe we will lose, but our chances are not zero. but after 3 games we've got a lot to fix if we hope to stay competitive. in order of importance for that game:

1) Pass rush. i realize we got a bunch of sacks in the 2nd half yesterday, but that's when we're wearing down rice's thin OL. i don't think it's going to happen against ou. aaron lewis won't be able to handle their huge guards at his size and break free for a sack. i like the boost that kindle brings, but i think coach boom will have to devise a special package of blitzes that may confuse the ou OL as to where we're coming from. otherwise, bradford will kill our young secondary.

2) Run game. we're just not that good right now. colt will get killed if he keeps running the way he does. maybe fozzy is the answer, but hard to judge in 1 game so far. i like the grit that cody johnson brings. i haven't seen all that much from vondrell.. watching aggy getting beaten up, it made me think it sure would be awesome for us to have a home run threat like goodson around. bottom line, if we can't run, colt's pass game won't be near as crisp as it has been so far.

3) Develop the youngsters in the secondary. not much to say here. this should be the #1 concern, but there's only so much you can do with the experience (or lack of) that our guys have. i really like gideon, but thomas makes me worried on the other side. even the corner play has been hit or miss. you'll see one great play and then a whiff the next. chykie is starting to come around though.

4) Find somebody that can catch at TE. would have be a great asset to have irby against ou. or for that matter finley! who the heck can we put out there? smith and ullman won't be making 10 catches a game. i think we should move someone there. how about montre webber at 6'3" 210? how about philip payne at 6'2 207? surely these guys at the end of the WR depth chart can contribute something at TE right? is howard ready to do anything yet? god this is the worst depth at any position that we have.

5) Punt/Kickoff returns. ok not as much something we have to change to beat OU, but can we find anyone else besides our top 2 receivers to do this? it makes me cringe every time watching quan sustain a hit on a kickoff return. ghost is fast, but not the most sturdy guy either.

thoughts guys?

getting John Chiles in the offensive scheme early in the game is obvious. Use him more. Also put him in for passing, not just put him in and let him run. As it is now, you know it is going to be a running play (either him or the RB) when he comes in.

I don't understand why Mack & GD aren't utilizing him more.

by putting Chiles in, I don't necessarily mean always taking Colt out.

I think they can both be used at the same time.

If you put Chiles in the backfield with Colt, there are many options available (pitch to Chiles who can then run or pass, etc)

I agree, Colt is the man right now.

But, I do think Chiles can be used more than he is now.

Just my opinion, take it or leave it.

Defense needs to be #1 concern by far.

As for TE, Ian Harris has to be close to getting back. Josh Marshall may be done for the year (hes wearing street clothes in a sling). I heard they were putting Greg Smith and Amhard Howard over at TE. Payne and Webber might be undersized for TE.

I'm sure greg davis will find a way to get around the TE roadblock. Really dissappointed we lost Irby though. He had a nice career (?).

I agree with the OP. Also, we can't keep running Colt, otherwise he will eventually get hurt. We need to utilize our WRs and RBs. The D definitely needs to step it up too for OU.

Colt,

I believe that OU will come out and run the ball right at us in the first few series before they start throwing the ball.
We must stop the run first and foremost.

I like the size of our Dline with emphasis placed on the speed of the front four.
OU lineman for the most part grab and hold on every play. They know that the refs will only call it 5-10% of the time so they play the percentages. Our best counter against this strategy is to have quicker and faster guys that will force the OU lineman to reach out in order to maintain the grab thereby exposing the grab.

I predict the over under called
holding plays by OU will exceed 6 if we win.

Agree 100% with the need to tighten up our defense, particularly in the secondary. Aside from injury to Colt, I think that will be our greatest Achilles' heel this year as a team.

The only thing that really concerns me about the running game is the need to get our backs more involved. Colt has been our leading rusher in two out of three games so far this season. Eventually some punk on an opposing D is going to try and take him out, and if they do, we are screwed at QB. Just look at Oregon -- I think they are on their third QB already this season. Ouch.

I know Fozzy was held back this week due to injury. It didn't sound too serious, so I wonder if we were just saving him for our rough stretch ahead? No need to risk injury in a game that Texas was likely to win anyway. I am a little disappointed that McGee and Obie were not more involved this week, though.

Our strength this year is a highly mobile QB who also happens to be a damn good passer. Unlike in past years, most of our yardage may come through the air this season. I'm OK with that as long as we score points and minimize turnovers. I don't even mind seeing our backs used as receivers in short yardage plays. We just need to run the ball well enough to make defenses respect the run, and be able to punch the ball in whenever we are in the red zone. If it means we score points and win games, I would rather win with a pass-first attack than lose because of a desire to make our stat sheet more balanced between run and pass.

The TE situation with the loss of Irby is a little worrying now, but hopefully we can adjust our scheme to compensate for that.

Loved the flea-flicker call last night, while we're at it. Did Greg Davis actually call that one? Or did Major er...shall we say, inadvertently signal the wrong play to the team? (wink wink, nudge nudge)

Losing Irby hurts especially against OU. I remember our TE's having a lot of success against them last year. Also need all our runningbacks healthy and running hard.

I agree.

By the way, why didn't Fozzy get time yesterday? It was nice to see Johnson get some PT and I thought he did pretty well, but I was thinking Fozzy might start, what happened?

2 things we need to address before blowU

1) Arky
2) Rocky Mountain Aggy

We need to beat Arky on our home turf, and go to Boulder and face a Colorado team that is riding high right now, and go into th RRS undefeated and ready for a top 5 matchup with the land thieves ready to take the upperhand in the Big 12 south and move into serious contention for the BCS. Even at #7 we are flying under the radar right now, and I like it.The Big 12 is shaping up to be a mother this year with 4 teams in the top 10. One at a time...
