I say there is a lot of baseball to be played and our team is going to be good. We are good now.We should at our near the top of the big 12. potential for top 8 seed. We should host a regional win it. I don't agree with the doom and gloom.
Pike
-17-7 overall
-4-2 in Big XII (2nd place)
-ranked:
#8 in Baseball America
#8 in Collegiate Baseball
#8 in NCBWA
#11 in Perfect Game
#7 in USA Today/ ESPN Coaches
I think they are going to be just fine. Augie will have them playing their best baseball in June, unlike OU who peaked in Feb/Mar. My predictions:
-Top 8 National Seed
-Host/Win Regional 3-0
-Host/Win Super Regional 2-1
-Semifinalist at CWS
I think they will host a Super Regional as well. Texas after 24 games last year was (18-6, 4-2 Big 12). I think they'll be just fine. Baseball is a funny game, they aren't hitting well now but I bet it all comes around later in the season and knock the covers off the balls.
I agree with the OP, and it's not doom and gloom and throwing in the towel because of a bad series. I feel we will finish 2nd or 3rd in conference as we have a strong conference this year. Host a regional as #1 or #2 seed, and have a 60/40 shot of winning it. Something tells me we will slip up at a bad time in the regional. With what I've seen from each player this year, and analyzing the likely best case scenarios from hitters...I still feel we would lose 2 of 3 in the super if we get there. I do believe by the postseason our starting pitching will be solid (and Cole Green will be back dominant), with the only risks in tournament format being the middle relievers. Yet I just feel our bats will falter in a deciding game in the regional or super.
I do not see CWS caliber in this team beyond starting and closing pitching. And the hitting will let us down in the end. BTW, someone said last year we went far with subpar batting average. True, but last year we definitely had a superior BA to now, yet the main difference was POWER. That team could hack the ball and put runs on the board. This team, no matter how much the consistency improves, will never pose a big power threat. And power can take poor hitting games and be an immediate equalizer.
I'm hoping for the best, it's just getting really hard to stay optimistic watching our offense...or lackthereof...aside from Tant going 2 for 3, the rest of team just hit 1 for 23 against BJ Roberts. Ouch.
Big difference in 2010 and 2011 teams. Texas batted 286 last year with 81 homers and they hit .299 in Big 12 play, they had 3 very good starters and awesome closer in Ruffin.
This year Texas is batting .210 in conference play and .247 overall with only 4 homers. They do have Jungmann but right now that is about it.
I think Texas can finish 3rd or 4th in the Big 12 but not better with this offense.
You have to have power and be able to hit to advance in College baseball.
I hope I am wrong but I am not impressed by this years team.
They have a problem hitting and a problem scoring runs.
With the pitching staff Texas has it should be a run away winner of the conference but with the hitting to date its hard to win when you top out at 3 runs a game and expect your pitchers to be perfect every game so maybe fourth or fifth is the realistic expectation.
Hate to be the crusty oldtimer but this thread is giving me flashbacks to just about this exact same time in 2002 on the Hornfans' Baseball Board. At least no one in this thread is claiming that the "game has passed that California hippie Augie by...".
We have two very good starters and Green may have started to come around.
These new bats have bothered us, but let's give it more than a few conference games before deciding that. Baseball is the most unpredictable sport in terms of outcome.
The funny thing is that IF we got to the CWS, we're actually built pretty well for a good run in the tournament. It's all about pitching and timely contributions once you get to that point.
Unfortunately, I don't think we have the offense to make it to that point. The best we could hope for if we hosted a Super Regional is injuries to the top 3 starting pitchers on the other team.
I'm still going with finishing 2nd or 3rd in Big12 and losing in a Super. The last 7 games the bats exploded, yet we have to keep in mind the level of competition was decreased. I'm very concerned with the relief pitching against the better teams in the future. My hats off to Tant especially for stepping up and leading the bats. Although Loy, Weiss, Etier, and Kephart deserve major props too. My thought a few weeks ago were that Tant, Walla, and Kephart at the plate would decide how far we go, as I felt the rest of the guys were doing about what they would. Walla has been out, but the other two have proved they are solid now and it made a huge difference.
Do I feel we CAN make the CWS with this team? Now I do see the potential and will eat some crow. As the bats have made a remarkable improvement I could not see being that dramatic. However, considering the competition we improved against, and that bigger series are still on the horizon...I still say we battle for 2nd with another team, and fall in Supers on road. And definitely hope I'm wrong, and will gladly admit it.
Let's not forget there's an *** wipe in CS on the selection board who'll make it as difficult as possible for Texas to get to Omaha (see sending TCU to Austin last year for our Super). Just sayin.
