What is your opinion of our PR situation?

That's Right

It seems that the last few years Mack has preferred to go with a guy who won't fumble and will run north/south over a guy who may lose yards every now and then but who also has a much better chance to take it to the house. I hear that Jamaal is going to get a shot at KR for the Chiefs. I wonder what he would have been like as a returner for us as a returner. Obviously he was somewhat of a fumble risk, and others don't want their badass TB risking injury returning kicks. To that I say Pete Carroll had Reggie returning kicks, and he was their VY.
Anyways, I like Quan as a returner, never fumbles, runs north/south, solid guy, however I wish mack would give some of these young home-run threats a chance to return some. I was cautiously excited when CB3 came in to return punts against FAU but it was clear from the jump that he would be immediately fair catching every kick. Well, that's my 2 cents. What is your opinion?

I don't necessarily buy the "experience" excuse that the Statesman beat writers throw around whenever mentioning the PR situation. It's more about a conservative approach of finding something that works and sticking with it, whether they're young or old. I think it probably started over the last couple seasons when Nate Vasher, Aaron Ross and Quan Cosby never gave up the reins on the position. We're stuck in a funk right now because no young guy has stepped it up enough to steal it.

Main PR:
1998: Hodges Mitchell, So
1999: Courtnee Garcia, Fr(RS)
2000: Hodges Mitchell, Sr (ok... he got it back but after some issues from the several other guys who tried it)
2001: Vasher, So
2002: Vasher, Jr
2003: Vasher, Sr
2004: Ross, So
2005: Ross, Jr
2006: Ross, Sr
2007: Cosby, Jr
2008: Cosby, Sr

I certainly believe if there was a young guy who could handle it, Mack would put him there. But we were spoiled by Vasher and Ross for so many years, it seems like a "steady performer" kinda sucks over a gamebreaker.

On punts, I want someone who will catch the ball. That is first and foremost. I think Quan is a good selection here.

On kickoffs, I want gamebreakers. I would like to see Desean and or DJ back there.

That's just my preference.

I think UT has a great PR department...now, if we could just get the Dallas paper to give the Horns more love....

Quan's on track to establish new UT records for kickoff and punt returns. He's a senior so after he accomplishes that goal, you'll probably start to see some younger guys get their opportunity.

I am with cochamps. I want steady hands on PR, period. Few PRs are going to the house, those are the facts. But a muffed punt can kill you in a heartbeat (ask South Carolina). On KR you are more likely to take one all the way, or at least gain a lot more yardage so it is slightly more worth the risk.

Hold up...I'm confused; did I not see Jordan Shipley returning punts? I don't know about you but I've heard that "he can get from here to there real quick!"

So who would y'all like to see get a chance at returning kicks? I might throw out Kirkendoll, DJ, DeSean, CB3, Deon, maybe even Chykie. Hell, if we're destroying Rice or UTEP or someone why not let Gerland return a kickoff? One UT player told me last year that he was the 2nd fastest player on the team. I know he was a HS track star, and if I'm not mistaken Gold is our punter anyway. That would be the coolest Sportscenter highlight ever, the backup punter returning a kickoff for a touchdown.

Quan is the man. We are lucky to have such an experienced player doing these PR's. He will be one of the best all-time at UT when he is done with the season.
