on signing more than 25 in one class? I know they have to "gray shirt", but what does that exactly mean? I know this comes up every year during recruiting date, so maybe the answer should be a permanent sticky.
No more than 25 scholarship athletes can enroll for class in August. Others can wait till January or pay their own way the 1st semester. Usually the teams with several over 25 have some that wont qualify, so they'll place them in JC somewhere hoping to have an "in" on them later..
Those enrolling in the spring can count toward the previous year if the team brought in less than 25 that year. Otherwise it is 25 per year and has to stay within the 85 total limit.
If a team has signed more than 25, they could offer the extra players the so called "gray shirt" to delay their enrollment until the next spring or fall, and they would count for the next year's class. However those extra players are not obliged to resign with that team and could sign with another team.
Right now there is no limit as to how many can be signed during the signing period. However, that rule may change this year. The SEC put a limit of 28 total signees for their teams due to the complaints about Ole Miss signing 37 players last year (of course at least a dozen were non qualifiers) and the NCAA may follow suit.
