kid averaged 10+ yards a carry for his HS career. we were only taking on RB last year, and offered him instead of christine michaels, who went to aggy.
whaley is 6'2 or so, and showed up last summer at about 250, supporting speculation that he'll end up at DE or TE. he's apparently lost 10-15 lbs, has picked up the offense well (even though the current scheme doesn't fit his skill set) and will get a shot next year.
He's a beast. Has great acceleration and is a threat to take it to the house whenever he breaks through traffic. He can knock small DBs out of the way with grace. He may not have the greatest lateral quickness or shake'n'bake stuff, but his straight line 0-60 is terrific for his size.
As I posted early in the year, Whaley came in heavy as stated. More importantly he was not ready for the college game. He was running upright and not below his pad level. Major is very pleased with what he has done with his weight and his improvement in technique since August. If he continues to improve (and gain strength) he will be a factor come this summer.

As with all backs who receive significant PT under Mack and GD, you must do everything well that is required w/o the ball. Esp recognize and pick up the blitz. That is the one factor that keep more backs from seeing joe jamail field.
Sorry folks but we've got another Henry Melton on our hands. Which may not end up being a bad thing as we saw with Henry. But in this offense, he by the time he takes the hand off out of the shotgun and runs to the outside on the zone play he is going to be swallowed up by the defense because he is not fast enough. I just do not see how he can possibly be productive in Texas' offense. Too big and slow to run out of the shotgun. Common sense.
True dat. But one was opinion (Henry Melton comparison), and one was based on comments from his position coach. Look, I don't know how Whaley will work out at RB, but he is working hard, doing the right things regarding weight and improving his technique. That I know. However, he is a great athlete and should help us somewhere. Right now, the plan is at RB. Just trying to pass on some off season gems!
I don't know how it's going to shake out, either. But, I will say this. It would be a shame if he is just another face in the RB crowd next season and we still don't have an answer at TE. His ability to catch the ball and turn around and get upfield in the Army AA game just screams TE to me. His size screams the same thing. I know that game was a limited sample set but I get the sense we are swimming against the current forcing the issue at RB with this dude.
Whaley is a RB period, hopefully we can weed out that situation next year and get a full time back instead of 6 part timers that can not get the job done. And also work on who we will have for a TE. If Grant comes back healthy, I say move Smith back to OL. Put Harris on medical hardship and Irby also if they are not back 100%.
As I said, I'd like to see 200ypg rushing. But, we were a team that was 65% pass and 35% run this past year. As for putting up the yardage against "patsies", here is our run yards as a % of total yards gained by game:
ulm 35%
wyo 35%
tt 40%
utep 48%
colo 15%
ou 53%
mo 38%
ok. st 36%
cfu 12%
bu 54%
ku 25%
a&m 49%
neb 9%
ala 30%
So, actually we had a mixed bag against "good" and "bad" teams when you consider the total offense for each game.
