What is prutsct.exe

i googled and yahoo'd it, and nothing at all came up, more than likely its going to be related to a virus or some sort of malicious software. i would recommend running an a/v scan, if you dont have an a/v software run this:

I'm running PC-cillin from Trend Micro as I type. It did a deep scan earlier today. I couldn't get anything on google either.

******* scumbags. I am SO SICK of battling these *******.

Hmm, do you have spyware tools? It could be related to that. I would check for it in your registry, search for it in safe mode, it's not related to windows so you can get rid of it and it wont hose your computer. If you notice any other program not working right after deleting that then just re-install, but you should be able to find it in the registry under the run keys.

I think ad-aware may have nabbed it. I'm not getting the error reports anymore. PC-cillin hasn't finished, but ad-aware got some of the usual junk.

it's no problem. im at work, ill do anything to get out of actually working lol. but what i would suggest from here is checking your registry:

Click Start -> Run
Type: "regedit"
Click OK

Navigate to:

HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Run ->

Look in there, only really pay attention to the "data" column and see what you can find, dont just start deleting **** out of here, and before you delete anything make a back up (click link below) but if you see that particular file, delete it.

how to back up windows registry.

i found 2 hits on google groups. both very current (today), but unfortunately, no solution. still, you may want to monitor this thread:

I am SO honored to be on the cutting edge of virus infection.

It looks just like the Windows one

prutsct has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

It has more language that mimics a Microsoft one with the same "Send Error Report" "Don't Send" boxes

The error sig is:
AppName: prutsct.exe AppVer: 1.0.0.212 ModName: msvbvm60.dll
ModVer: 6.0.96.90 Offset: 00045e90

Basically, it seems that the error report is the cute trick that the virus is playing. It isn't really an error.

Nick, I run PC-cillin too and had a virus that it couldnt get rid of.

The solution was:

1) Right click on My Computer icon [Windows XP]
2) Go to Properties
3) Turn off System Restore
4) Run Manual Scan on PC-Cillin
5) Go back and turn on System Restore

Worth a try.

I've done that successfully before, and the virus may be hiding in a restore point, but PC-cillin isn't picking it up. I downloaded what I thought was the free version of spy doctor and it found the offending prutsct, but won't clean it unless I buy their product. While I feel SpyDoctor is entitled to be paid for their useful product, I feel like it would be wrong to allow prutsct to make me spend money. I gotta think that there will be a cure here pretty quick by some of the people I'm already signed up with.

When I first got the damn thing google produced nothing. Now, there is all kinds of stuff coming up on google. Seems like most people are getting rid of it by renaming the bastard file and then deleting it. I hope that will work when I get home.

Nick were you able to rid your computer of this pest...I found it recently on my daughters computer and can't get it off. Let me know

No. I wasn't. I went into safe mode and deleted from the registry and it came right back. I ran all kinds of spyware and the spyware either didn't find it or wanted $30 to remove it. I don't mind paying people for their products, but it was a matter of principle that I wasn't going to pay because of this particular bastage.

I finally ran restore after the trip to regedit and it quit coming back. It's still on the computer, but it's not having any effect any more. I wish I could say that I killed it and could tell you how, but it's kind of like when you get the hiccups and think you MAY have gotten rid of them? At some point in time you know you are cured, but for a while you half expect them to come back at any second. I'm not declaring myself cured yet.

I even disabled the program in msconfg and it came back. I renamed it. I renamed it and deleted it. I just checked my registry and it's still there under run and run once. Adaware doesn't pick it up. I'll try the DrDelete.
