What is a good X-Mas present for a lawyer?

Well, which kind of lawyer is he? There are two kinds; the kind that like to dress up in women's clothes, and the kind that like fishing.

I would suggest something from Victoria's Secret. Or Bass Pro Shops.

A soul.

I hate to interrupt the levity with a serious answer, but here are some law-oriented book suggestions.

West makes a presentation version of Black's Law Dictionary as well as a regular version. Most of the chain bookstores have them, or if you're in a place where there's a bookstore that sells to law students, they'll have it too.

There's a 4-volume set of Blackstone's Commentaries of the Laws of England from the Univ. of Chicago Press, a reprint of the original printing, complete with f's where the s's should be. It's in paperback so it's not ridiculously expensive. It's interesting to see both how the law is the same and how it's evolved over 250 years.

Lawrence Friedman's "American Law in the 20th Century" is an interesting read. The companion book, "A History of American Law" by Friedman, is in paperback by now.

Get him the Art of Cross Examination. Great book every lawyer should read, even those ***** transactional lawyers.
