What is a bit torrent file?

I've seen the extension .torrent and was wondering if anyone has a simple explanation?

Is it a video or audio file?

can be either.
It is a means of file sharing where the more users are sharing the file, the faster your download speed will be.
You can download huge files very quickly if it's being seeded by enough people.

You use a program like this ABC Bittorrent Client to get in on the action.

Also the .torrent file is just a "seed" file that runs the download. The actual file you download is separate.
