What if the truckers strike?

Just read on CNN that the truckers are threatening to strike as of Monday night over fuel prices.

This kinda worries me. Seeing as two days of icy roads in austin pretty much drained the grocery stores of milk, cheese, and bread a year ago january when we had that freeze, a week without truckers could cause major issues.

Thoughts?

The roads would be free of large, slow moving vehicles that take their time in the left lane passing another large, slow moving vehicle.

Also, no massive trucks pulling out in front of me in the process of passing another slow moving truck, forcing me to slam on my brakes if I don't feel like running into the back of lumbering truck driven by some jackass king of the road.

I'll feel sympathy for truckers when they stop acting like they own the road. Till then, f em.

And yes, I'm aware of how much our society relies on their service. It would be even better if they didn't waste so much time at the truck stop seeking out meth and whores.

A lot of people don't understand how important trucking actually is. I saw a bumper sticker one day driving to Ft. Worth. It said:

"If you have it, a trucker delivered it."
How true

I'm a manager for a trucking/chemical company here in Houston. All of our drivers are company drivers, not "Owner Operators."

I've got to get it through my driver's heads to shut their trucks off when there is no need to idle. Once it starts cutting into their profit sharing, maybe they'll notice..

But I couldn't imagine being an owner operator right now. It's got to be pretty scary for them.

Government regulations on sulfur and NOx halved tractor trailer fuel economy (i.e. doubled CO2 emissions) a few years ago. They are still far and away the most fuel efficiency vehicles on the road, about twice as efficient as a Prius in optimal conditions. Before the new regulations, they were 4x as fuel efficient.

Seems like a lame April Fool to me.

How effective would a trucking strike even be? Many truckers are independent contractor types, working quasi-independently and sometimes for themselves. Many of them are not only not in a union, they are hostile toward the very concept. There are lots of unaffiliated or short-route drivers who would relish a chance to get in on more lucrative routes. I just don't see truckers as a monolithic group that can strike and actually make a difference.

And the reasoning? Fuel prices? Yeah, right. What would a strike accomplish there?

If they strike, maybe demand will go down - thus temporarily driving down prices?

BWAAAAP BWAAAAP BWAAAAP

strike against who? are they going to stop delivering gas, or just stop delivering altogether? who would they like to negotiate with to end this strike?

not gonna happen.

let them strike, there are plenty of drivers that can take their place...I would just stay off the interstates during that transition period.

Montag, you and other non cdl drivers are the menace on the road. Are you aware that in the range of 80 plus percent of all accidents and collisions involving a cdl and non-cdl driver is NOT the cdl drivers fault? These guys can drive circles around the rest.

If a trucker is in the far left lane and they are not supposed to be (such is the case in most metro areas) then they are flat out wrong and will hopefully get ticketed for it. But your description or attitude is so far off it is not worth many more keystrokes. Perhaps you forgot your emoticon.

Maduro, you are going to have to post a link before anyone would believe your outlandish claim that reformulated diesel caused truck mileage to be cut in half. This is just not true. I don't think it affects mileage at all. The engines themselves may have trouble in some cases, if they were older designs.

yeah loop, you got me. cdl drivers have never done wrong, never drive recklessly, it's all the fault of crazy guys like me.

But please, let me buy into whatever machine or ability you have to know, even without actually knowing or meeting me, all about me. We'll be rich.

Well, looks like the strike was unsuccessful. But the idea of truckers "protesting" by driving 20 MPH through urban areas cracks me up. How infuriating would that be if you were stuck in it?

You would notice in about 3 days if independent owner operators did strike. Deisel would fall ever so slightly in price and you would start seeing shortages of different products withink several days of the beginning of the strick-

IF THEY ALL STRUCK

the independents are getting squeezed from both directions and they are basically ****** unless that can raise their rates. the problem is that since they are independent some other operator may fill the gap should they unilaterally try to raise their rate.

Montag, I don't need a machine to know you did not actually manage to comprehend my post. Had you done so you would have seen that nowhere does it say truckers or cdl drivers are perfect. In fact, there is a percentage of accidents that are their fault, as noted.

Further, I agree that when they are in the left lane when they are not supposed to be, they are teh suck, bigtime. I hope they get tickets and cease that activity. It is dangerous and prohibited.

Feel free to recheck.
