In Slither I just love the neighborly dialog in the barn. Yeah, she may have turned into a monster, but she's our neighbor and therefore our monster. Interesting and clever sociological twist.

INT. OLD BARN - NIGHT

Bill and Wally move cautiously but quickly inside. But
they stop suddenly, in disgust and horror.

BILL
Oh...

It's Brenda. And she doesn't look good. Her weepy little
head is stuck to the front of a huge fleshy orb, which is
what her body has become. This enormous ball of flesh is
nine or ten feet tall. Vestigial fingers protrude from
the sides. She is utterly immobile. Her flesh sloshes,
slightly and constantly; a thousand snakes seem to be
slithering beneath her thin, tight, bruised skin. The
woman is in great pain. She SOBS. Her mouth and chin
are stained with blood.

The posse and Starla enter behind Bill and Wally and are
equally astounded.

OLDER COP
Oh, ****!

They see the source of the awful stench:

54.

Brenda is encircled by the rotting carcasses of cows and
horses and forest critters. They are mostly skeletal, as
they have been largely devoured. They're swarming with
flies. The stench is so bad the posse cover their faces
with the bottom of their shirts.

The SOBBING Brenda looks desperately at Bill and Wally.

BRENDA
Something's wrong with me.

WALLY
Uh, yeah.

Bill and Wally get in a little closer.

BILL
Brenda, um...

BRENDA
I didn't want no one to be seeing
me like this.

As the posse inch closer, Brenda's whole body suddenly
LURCHES FORWARD a bit -- like whatever's inside her is
trying to get out and to the posse. Brenda SCREAMS in
agony.

The posse jump back. They stare as she recomposes herself.

BRENDA
How are my boys, Bill? Are they
all right?

BILL
Boys are fine, Brenda. Uh, what's --
what's happening here, exactly?

BRENDA
I'm so ******* hungry, Bill. I'm
so hungry. I just never knew
anybody could be so hungry.

Brenda tries to smile in a way she might charm her Daddy
into giving her candy. This is creepy as hell.

BRENDA
Would you mind handing me a piece
of that possum there at your feet?
Little bit?

There's a certain scene in "The Hunger", a vampire movie with David Bowie, Catherine Deneuve, and Susan Sarandon, that comes to mind....

I don't know if "enjoy" is the right word, but the scene at the end of Night of the Living Dead, which just aired on Halloween, is brilliant. The one...spoiler...I'm sure everyone has seen this classic, but just in case...where the main character gets shot by the sherrif's men who are killing the remaining zombies. Chilling scene. What a movie!

I like the scene in Paranormal Activity where the entity picks up her leg while she is in bed and later pulls her out of bed, across the floor and down the hall. It was heartwarming.

I'll label my responses per scene.

Scariest: "Red Rum, RED RUM!!!" or "Come play with us."
Most frustrating: End of The Mist.
Most shocking: Sixth Sense or last scene in The Blair Witch Project
Most overrated: Pretty much any slasher film and/or the Scream movies
Most fun: Zombie movies by Romero

Psycho was before my time but, I'll bet that scene was pretty shocking for the time.

I heard one time that, if you slow down the scene frame-by-frame, you can see Bates' mother behind the door or somesuch.

Good stuff. I've read the story and I seem to recall that it ended without a resolution. Seems like they just kept driving and driving and then the story ended.

Knoxville,

It was also the way the Psycho sequence is set up. There is a narrative where Leigh has stolen money to be with her boyfriend. She was a major star so it was also pretty shocking to see her and that whole narrative just annihilated in that most vulnerable of places, the shower.

"Scream" did something similar with the brutal killing of Drew Barrymore in the opening sequence of that movie. Part of the shock is, "my God! They're killing the star!" After that, anything goes.

Not really a horror movie, but a horror scene in a sci-fi film: Alien. When the chest-burster scene happened, I grabbed the arm of the guy in the seat next to me (a total stranger) and yelled out "HOLY ****!" Never been so startled in my life...and to this day I bet he hasn't either.

I know the Blair Witch Project gets a lot of hate. Half think it was the dumbest movie of all time; the other half, the scariest movie of all time. It took me a second to realize why he was standing in the corner as well. When I did, my blood turned to ice.

I can't believe that no one's mentioned Carrie. I saw it back in high school with a couple friends (who had seen it before). One of them placed his icy cold hand on the back of my neck (it had been holding a jumbo iced drink) in perfect sync with the final shocker at the very end of the movie. I cursed, jumped 3 feet in the air, and then (once I had calmed down) convulsed into laughter at such a perfect "gotcha!"

To me, The Shining will always be the scariest movie I've ever seen. Watched it for the first time at a fraternity house one night. Scared the bejeesus out of me especially upon returning to Jester at about 3 in the morning and having to walk down empty halls. I just knew the twins were going to be on the other side of the next turn.

Here's some horror scenes I still remember from the scary Saturdays of my youth:

A B&W movie that many younger viewers have never seen is "Island of Lost Souls."

The Link

It's about evil Dr. Moreau, whose macabre tale of terror has been cinematically reimagined several times.

However, for me, this 1932 original remains the very best version.

Yeah, it's not in color and it's old and, in part, dated, but it's definitely worth seeing if you appreciate the horror genre or its history in movies.

The ending wherein Dr. Moreau as played by Charles Laughton screaming "What is the law? " is carried to the House of Pain by all the half human creatures he created is the memorable scene.

Bela Lugosi is featured as the Sayer of the Law.

This seminal movie begat or influenced many, many other films which every horror fan has seen.

Another good B&W oldie is "The Body Snatcher" starring both Lugosi and Boris Karloff.

The Link

This one's based on a Robert Louis Stevenson story about grave robbery for profit, an actual ghoulish and gruesome problem in England and Scotland during the 1800s.

If you've only seen these two famous, creepy actors as Count Dracula and Frankenstein's Monster, check out this worthwhile horror flick from movie making's past.

A wagon ride through the night, carrying a newly exhumed corpse, is the best scene.

Each of these movies has exciting atmosphere, an interesting story, neat visuals and good acting.

Over emphasis on gushing gore, scream inducing sudden shocks and frightening chase scenes came later to this genre.

These movies have plots with thoughtful buildup leading to satisfying denouement.
