What has happened to the Longhorn Women?

Coach G had the Women Horns playing really good the end of last season. We started this season strong with some very good wins, including the 14 point win over Tennessee at home.

Then it seems that after the Christmas break the team is not playing nearly as good. What changed? I know there are several on this board that are strong supporters and know what is going on.

I was really disappointed in the loss to Tech yesterday. We should be able to beat them with the players we have. Tech has lost to some very average teams. When Tech beats us in anythng they think they are "world beaters", and we have to put up with all their bragging.

I would really like to know why some of you think about the state of our Longhorn Women. Thanks.

We just need to learn how to win on the road. I really feel like we need to land 2 more top recruits like Kelsey Boone and Taylor Hill. It wont help this season but landing those two will go along ways in helping the horns being able to hold their own on the road. We have a team full of above average players so we need a coulple of super stars. That being said I think coach G and staff will find a way to get the horns back on track one way or another.

Wasn't Erika Arririan the #1 player in the country???

I have yet to see why she was the #1 player. Brittany and Kat seem to school her all the time!!!!

Seemed like they lost their focus over the holidays. But, then again, this team was pretty bad last season on the road. With the ending they had, it looked like they had learned to play on the road and win. Looks like they have to remember what they did to start winning on the road. They did display some of that determination at Tech but were not firing on all cylinders. They didn't shoot well at Tech, 36%, but did move the ball much better, getting 16 assists on 21 made FGs. They had a decent defensive game, although it might not have looked that way. They certainly stepped it up in the second half.

They don't get a lot of offensive production out of the posts, but normally do get about double what they got against Tech. Defensively, our post players did cause problems when they were on the floor. Unfortunately, at times, both have showed problems with fouls. This time, both were in foul trouble at the same time.

I think they have an excellent shot at winning the next two home games before they travel to OU. Lubbock has just been weird the last few years.

There was an article in the Lubbock paper before the game that quoted Kristy Curry, the Tech coach, saying Texas could have 5 McDonald All Americans on the court at the same time. Do we have them right now?

Curry really built up the Texas team before the game, and now is claiming Tech has really accomplished a huge feat by beating Texas. I guess that is just coach speak.

I saw some of the game on TV against Tennessee, and thought we looked great. After the strong finish last year, and the strong beginning this year, I thought we were becoming a great team. Looks like we lost something over the break.

I give Curry credit for knowing which buttons to push to get a win. Everyone knows that Texas has the elite talent and should have won the game, but that doesn't always happen in the Big 12, on the road.

I'm sure you'll see some motivated Texas players when Tech travels to Austin.

Has anyone heard anything more about Coach G's "meltdown?" A co-worker asked me about it and heard she apparently let the officials and the team have it after the loss. And she was angry during a post-game press conference. I haven't read much about it (besides what was in the Statesman). That call by the official is really shameful. A foul away from the basket and the play which essentially decided the game. Shameful.

As for what's wrong with Texas--I have no idea. They sometimes seem to lack leadership. As for Erika being the #1 player in the country when she was recruited--I've never seen that. She has rarely, if ever, been the #1 player on the court. I would hate for a game to come down to a shot by her because I fear she'd choke.

BTW--I wasn't implying Coach G shouldn't have had a meltdown. I hope she did. I love her passion and her fire. I hope the official who made the call got an earful.

This team sort of had a meltdown in the middle of last season. Y'all remember? And I think that team made the Big 12 tournament semifinals and could have made it farther. So don't panic people.

Sorry, i may get blasted here...BUT

the #1 rated recruiting class of 4 yrs. ago was Conradt's class. Let's remember that. Jody, while having a class act style of play, is not the same as Coach G's style of play. One can be a hall of famer and one can be a future hall of famer without having the same style of players. I could not have more respect for Coach G, or the players, than i do right now for all of them trying their best to "mesh" with each other. I'm sure it's hard...i wouldn't want to be on either side of the coin here.

Sure, SDSU and TTU were "winnable" games. So was Purdue.

It's hard for any of us fans to comprehend what's going on with the team. As was mentioned in another thread, some of us agree that we were ranked too high in the beginning, and could have been a result of Coach G's stature as a coach. But what was also mentioned is the fact that she is trying to rebuild this program.....a program that may not include recruits that fit HER style of play as of right now.

I'm sure in due time we will see a team that will "string together an entire season" and not just "play well in patches". Give Coach her time. She's only in her 2nd season here...and remember it took her at least 6-7 yrs. to make Duke the "elite" team that it is today.

I miss Niqky Hughes...there was NEVER a doubt that she was going to leave everything she had on the court. That is the type of intensity that I don't always see. I hope she is doing well.

I am curious if Coach G is discouraged with the team's play and results this year, or is she patient and understands it will take her 3 or 4 years to have a team that is always one of the top teams in the country.

I was a fan of Jody Condradt for all those years, and it was time for her to step aside. I was very excited about getting Coach G as our coach. I just liked everything about her. She had built Duke into a national power and she had a great reputation. I think she will build something great here at Texas.

I read something somewhere that Coach G said she was not used to having to wait so long to get commitments from players she wanted. It kind of sounded like she was either disappointed, or discouraged, about recruiting. I hope she is not, and I hope she gets the players she wants to get this team to the top.

Jody is a class act, and I am so impressed with Coach G, and she is a class act. I just thought any high school player out there would jump at the chance to play at Texas for Coach G. The fact that she is an olympic coach should impress the recruits.

Hopefully she will get the players she wants, and this team will turn the corner soon and become a great team this year.

I am a longhorn who lives in Lubbock. I get info on the teams from several internet sources, but when I want to know about the womens' basketball I come to this site. Several of you are very knowledgable about them, and you are always willing to share. Thanks.

Any other game you will see fouls called away from the ball. his is no different. If you don't want an offensive foul called on you, don't run straight ahead with your head turned another way.

UT signee Erika Arriaran named 2005 State Farm/WBCA Player of Year

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) named University of Texas women's basketball signee Erika Arriaran o (Norco, Calif./Norco HS) the 2005 State Farm/WBCA National High School Player of the Year. The WBCA and State Farm present this award annually to the top players in each of the five WBCA collegiate divisions (NCAA Divisions I, II, III, NAIA, JC/CC) and high school at its National Convention.

Arriaran, a 5'10" guard, is averaging 18.2 points, 6.5 assists, and 9 rebounds this season for the Cougars. Her career highlights include over 1200 points, 600 rebounds and over 300 assists and steals - without playing her sophomore year. She has led Norco HS to the No. 21 national ranking in the USA Today high school rankings. The Full Court Press and the All-Star Girls Report recruiting services also ranked Arriaran the No. 1 ranked player for the class of 2005.

Arriaran is the second University of Texas women's basketball player in two years to collect the prestigious State Farm/WBCA National Player of the Year honors, following current 6-3 Longhorn sophomore Tiffany Jackson, who earned the award as a Duncanville (Tx.) High School senior in 2003.

"We are extremely pleased to present Erika with the State Farm/WBCA High School Player of the Year award," said WBCA CEO Beth Bass. "Erika is an outstanding athlete and a true representative of the sport. We look forward to seeing her play at the collegiate level."

Arriaran's list of accolades and accomplishments include: 2004 Street and Smith All-American, one of the 2004 USA Today Top Super 25 Girls Players, a 2004 Parade All-American Second Team and 2004 Naismith High School Player of the Year finalist. All California Division 2AA- 1st Team 2003 and 2004. This past summer, Arriaran won a gold medal playing for the 2004 USA Junior National Team as she helped the United State qualify for the 2005 FIBA Junior World Championships.

Arriaran will be formally honored on Saturday, April 2 during the "WBCA Night of All-Stars" at the University of Indianapolis' Nicoson Hall in Indianapolis, IN, where she will also be competing in the WBCA High School All-America Game, presented by Nike. The "WBCA Night of All-Stars" doubleheader event is part of the 2005 WBCA National Convention, held in conjunction with the NCAA Division I Women's Final Four.

Playing in that Nike/WBCA High School All-America Game will be another UT signee for next year – 6-1 Earnesia Williams of Sapulpa, Oklahoma and Sapulpa High School. Both Arriaran and Williams were named 2005 WBCA First Team All-Americans. A third Texas signee for next year – forward Crystal Boyd of Little Rock, Arkansas and Parkview High School, was named Honorable Mention for the High School All-America Game.

"State Farm is proud to partner with the WBCA and recognize these gifted student-athletes for their dedication and tremendous achievements they have accomplished," said Pam El, Vice President of Marketing at State Farm.r>

Another clarification:
Erika played as freshman 2005/2006. She was injured January 2007 as a sophomore before conference play started. Another poster indicated she was injured as a junior which is not correct. Erika actually only played 1 1/2 seasons before sitting out for 18 months.

The scouting agencies do not always peg them correctly. I would say that anyone who did not think that Courtney Paris was not the top player in that class did you get enough exposure to the various players.

I've seen great high school players who were not great college players. I've seem players that not too many universities were interested in blossom into tremendous college players, which was the case with much of the Baylor NC team. Sometimes you just don't know how it will turn out.
