What happened to the Soccer Spirit (non-UT) here?

The MLS season is wrapping up.
The CONCACAF Champions League is in full swing.
Freddy Adu may even get a start this weekend.
Josy Altidore didn't even make the bench for Villareal on Wednesday.

Donovan is crushing the league (though he blew some chances last night).

Chelsea has been cruising, but they are all banged up.
Man City's new oil owners are going to have that team in the Top 4 by the end of the season.
ManU has started off with a sputter, but just got C. Ronaldo back.
Tottenham blows.

There are tons of things to talk about, but no one seems to be talking. Porque no?

I don't talk in public forums about the success of my City. See, it may end if I wake up. shhhhh.

...Says the fan whose team just crashed out of the Carling Cup.

SIDE NOTE: I think it is funny that Eddie Johnson can't even start for Cardiff, but he continues to get selected for the National Team.

Well l00p's Man City falls to might might Wigan.Freddy Adu doesn't get the start against Lille, but comes on in the 79th minute. And even though Monaco is at home, they lose 0-2 on goals in the 69' & 87'. It appears that Freddy was the 2nd of 2 substitutions for Monoco.

Might Hull kicked Arsenal's ***. Hull currently sits 6th
in the league with 11 points. ONE MEASLEY POINT behind Arsenal.

US owned Aston Villa is in 3rd place 1 point behind 1st Chelsea & US/Texas owned Liverpool 2.

This could be the best year for parity in the EPL in a while. West Ham is 5th place and Man U is 11th.

And every team except for TOTTENHAM has at least one win.

My Tottenham loving friend in LA must be dying.

It's a good year.

and on the MLS report-

There were goals galore yesterday. Including a 5-4 result between Colorado and NY Red Bulls. And nearly every team still has a shot at the playoffs. And the play is much
improved over previous years.

I was happy to see my boy Carlos Vela bag a hat trick for the gunners mid-week, but then sad to see him spend 77 minutes on the bench in the loss to Hull.

Since we all know Chelsea is going to win the Premier League, i just figured you guys didn't want me saying it over and over after every game.

but i can change that!

Same here with City, Liverpool and a couple of other boards. The PSG and Bayern Munich boards are tougher even with english translation. The better blogs are in Gurmann and Frinch.

HULL- You can't stop them. You can only hope to contain them.

After 7 Games: 3rd Place in the EPL

Tottenham: After 7- 20th Place

I go to the Dynamo website for MLS talk. I watch Arsenal whenever I can but don't talk about it much anywhere. The only time I really get into discussion here about soccer is when we are discussing the national team. Although I was excited about seeing the young kids last night...The game against Cuba on Saturday was boring to me because 1. we had just beat OU and 2. tired of seeing us beat up on minnows.

Argentina has finally jettisoned it's coach Alfio Basile.

Some of my English students yesterday were going off on how embarrassing it was to lose to Chile 1-3. One guy started reeling off names of all of their incredible players yet they got crushed by Chile. He said with all that talent, it's gotta be the coach. (He's right.)

And now Baseli is off to a wine tasting.

The Link

Basile left not because they lost to Chile (which was only 1-0, BTW), but because Messi and Agüero decided they were not going to listen to him anymore.

I was perusing the finals of different games involving US players and this is what I noticed today:

Cardiff won their game 2-0
-Eddie Johnson did not start
blush.gif

-but he did go into the game... in the 90th minute.
rolleyes.gif

Reading lost 1-2
-Hannemann (sp?) gave up two
-Convey didn't even make the bench

Brescia beat Triestina 3-2 (Serie B)
-Danny Szetela came on in the 53 minute
-He scored in the 88th minute to make it 3-1, thus
-He scored the game winning goal

Monaco lost to Nice 1-2 (the battle of the rich beach towns)
-All scoring was done by the 57th minutes
-Freddy Adu came on in the 82 minute

So that's what I noticed today.

My boys at FC Dallas have been officially eliminated from the playoff race.

I hope Kenny Cooper gets called again for the last game. We'll see.

Soccer isgreat exercise, the injury rate is low, and you don't need expensive equipment. But let's not pretend it is a spectator sport. The most exciting thing you are going to see is someone kicking a ball with their foot.

I know, let's invent a sport where you don't get to use your hands! We won't grip, throw, volley or swing anything at all! It'll be great! Yawn.

Unlike most countries, Americans aren't willing to settle for lowest common denominator athleticism when volleyball, basketball, football and baseball are available.

Well even after Boca went down a man for nearly the entire 2nd half at Estadio River Plate (it actually has a different name, pero bueno), they somehow get a goal in the 60' and win 1-0.

River is absolute rubbish in this aperatura. My Boca friends are happy, the hot girls who are River fans (hot girls are MUCH more likely to pull for River than Boca) are sad, and I'm off to have dinner with a German, some South Africans, Brits, & an Argentine or 2. (Steak of course, pero bueno.)

Well, that's your opinion, Alpine. By you post I'm assuming you think Americans are somehow superior then every other country in the world, at least when it comes to choosing which sports to follow.

Moving on...Go Dynamo! Secured the West and now looking to try and secure a 3rd consecutive MLS Championship.

What's the best way to keep track of upcoming games? Is there some pattern like college football on Thursday and Saturdays? I'm interested in watching the European and MLS matches as well as the International matches, but I don't have a DVR so anything outside of prime time will be difficult to catch.

Who carries these games? Are any of them HD? Whatever happened to the ESPN2 - Premier League/UEFA (or whatever it was) deal?

So diego armando maradona is now the argie skipper. Will he be a beckenbauer and take his team all the way, or will he be a sanchez and fall flat on his face.

I do believe argentina, along with spain, are the favorites in south africa. Will diego push the right buttons to get them to the final?

Hi TexanWolv. Of course I think America and Americans are superior to every other country in the world in virtually every significant category. Don't you?

First of all: Jozy Altidore scores in Spain!!!

Jozy came on in the 90' and scored "seconds after coming off the bench". Still 18 years old (for a few more days) and he scores in Spain!! (I know that the rain in Spain falls mainly in the plains... but hey, I can't complain.)

RE: Diego Maradona becoming the coach of Argentina...

This could be a quilombo
of epic proportions. He's no more qualified to coach Argentina than Sigi Shmidt.

He's coached ~6 games in his life. ~Three with a 3rd division team and then another ~3 at Racing many years ago.

IF his assistant coaches do a good job, Diego can show up (late) and keep the team loose. But I doubt he will be tactically worth a ****.

I also agree that along with Spain, Argentina has arguably the most talented players in the world right now. But these guys have not been playing well together. (Thus, the coaching change.)

It will be interesting.
