What does ESPN say about ref choke?

I'm almost done griping on this board, but I am very curious, especially what Digger, Jay, and Dickie V. will have to say about this.

I always enjoy their commentary, consider it to be fair. Maybe somebody can post their video reaction. Should also be a good barometer for them to see if they actually watch all of the games.

I am curious what others view of the Williams pick and roll is. He created his opportunity with an illegal pick then cleared out after the pick.

There were two instances in which Thompson was run out from under the basket on rebounds with arms extended.

Williams strikes me as a guy who thinks there are different rules for him.

And Jim Burr needs to retire and shame on those trying to make him some officiating hero.

Rick Pitino (while not ESPN) said that the 5 sec. violation on Joseph was the only blatant missed call in 4 days of basketball. Everyone else on the panel concurred.

Hopefully, this guy has ref'd his last game. I'm not putting the blame squarely on Burr - the SJU/Rutgers debacle was enough for me - but the 4 second call at that point of the game was egregious.

What will his punishment be? If we were talking football, Texas fans would not rest until his career was involuntarily finished. Since it's basketball, Texas fans will probably just shrug and say, "eh, whatever, it's baseball season now."

The exaggerated, theatrical manner in which Cartmell made the dubious 5-second call says it all, for me. That's a self-aggrandizing referee playing to the crowd, rather than an honest ref letting the kids decide the game on the court.

Narcissism is a cancer in officiating. In any sport.

That game should not have even been that close so the criticizing of Barnes is completely justified. Arizona has one player that would break the top 6 (and maybe 7) on the Texas roster. The talent is not even comparable. And they beat us.

i don't know if this has been posted elsewhere, but here it is on YouTube... The Link

pretty clearly early, not in only in the matter of real time, but even the time that was kept by the ref and his handcount..

He didn't even get to the 5th second, which would have been when his hand arm was fully extended, by his own count.

I am not going to cry like a baby about it, this team kind of imploded this last month. But the video clearly shows it early.

Most refs will even give the timeout right at the 5 second mark. usually only called when it is obviously late.. half a second or so. This time it was different, you can't blame Joseph or Barnes on this one.

I agree with that, too. He seemed very excited to be the center of attention of the whole arena.

He ref'd 7 games for Arizona this year, and they went 5-2. He ref'd 3 of ours (USC, Oakland, and Ariz.), and we went 1-2. Pac 10 ref, likely ended up more emotionally attached to them.

I heard he was on an officiating crew that got kicked out of the Big East tournament because of dumb calls. Does that make him a Big East ref or did they hire out?

Burr was on a crew that did not call a violation in the last two seconds. They were dismissed.

There aren't really league refs anymore, except that you may work a lot of games for a league. They're independent contractors and work wherever they can get a game.

So why do people keep calling Cartmell a Pac 10 ref?

Does he just do a lot of games there because he lives out there?

Do we ever get to "black ball" a ref? Because I'd use that on Cartmell in a NY minute after his "performance".
