What do you do with a short wave radio?

Serious question. Are they handy in emergencies, or is it a hobby to find random radio stations broadcasting from far away places?

Growing up, my Dad always had one. It was kind of fun trying to tune in broadcasts from around the world, like VOA or some such. With the internet around it's really just more of hobby I'd say.
