What do you collect?

As I get a little older (38) and have a little more disposable income, I am looking for another hobby. I woulld like to start collecting something...but I am not sure what. I still have some baseball cards from my youth, so I thought about diving into older years--say the 50's & 60's.

How about coins? I have a coin collection as well. I would probably start with collecting half dollars or silver dollars.

I thought about paintings or sketches.

What about rare LP's?

So my question to those that choose to answer...what do you collect and why?

Ideally I would collect something I enjoyed pursuing and this "hobby" would hold its value. I don't care about making a ton of money with this....

I have collections of comics, baseball cards and coins from when I was younger. The cards and comics have not retained their value at all, and I don't like the way the market is pushing towards everything being graded and stuck in a hard case. If I were to recomend collecting to someone I'd say go with something that reminds you of your youth, but that you can still have fun with today. If you like sports then go with cards or memorabilia. If you like video games go with those. If you like music pick up old LPs. I just find that as we're getting older we miss the olden days more and more, and it's a lot more enjoyable trying to recapture some of that now that you are the one making the financial decisions (as opposed to your parents).

I myself have purchased a few arcade games. I've also thought about fleshing out my comic collection with some older comics I couldn't afford as a kid (such as high-priced X-Men comics), or sports memorabilia from my youth (such as Nolan Ryan). I figure if I collect something I'm interested in now I might grow out of favor with it, but If I still want something I wanted as a kid I'll probably still be happy with it as I get even older.

University of Texas football memorabilia. It combines the joy of building a collection, finding treasures at hole in the shops, my love of ebay, and my greatest passion - my Horns. Every vision of my dream house includes my "longhorn" room with room to display all of my stuff.

Honestly, Id rather start a hobby where you are actually doing something and not just accumulating cardboard, paper or coins (precious metals/ gems might not be bad)...

Start running, fishing, boating, golfing, sailing... or if you want to collect something perhaps get something you can use or wear..., like watches or something.

I went through a collection phase myself... but I ended up collecting more dust and clutter than anything else. So instead, I travel now.

Music. Copious amounts of it.

Dog hair ball/clumps. Sadly, copious amounts of it till I sweep.

sadly, pretty much nothing.

I did collect photos of all the guitar sculptures last year (that I took) I made a few calendars for people as gifts.

Other than that, I am usually busy getting rid of stuff...

Cars. The kind you need to repair. It's actually quite easy to learn as you go & you'll end up with tools as an ancillary collection.

Plus, it's more than simply getting "stuff" & more like learning about your item.

To start, I suggest a Chevy product from the 60's with a body & interior that's in useable shape so you can focus on the engine.

Then over time, you can expand into other areas of the ride.

Wow, some great suggestions.

I like the idea of collecting stamps in my passport while I collect wine from around the world. That could be a great deal of fun. Collecting stocks is taken care of. I suppose I could invest a little more, but hey...I can't take it with me, right?

I have always wanted an old convertible Cadillac to fix up, but I am not ready for that. I need to move back to Austin so I can drive the Hill Country on those perfect days.

I think baseball cards appealed to me because it reminded me of growing up.

Thanks for all the responses.

i don't collect anything anymore.

when i was younger i collected rocks and sports cards.. i still have them but i don't collect anymore.

Coca Cola stuff.
Currently have a coke machine that holds 12 ounce King Size bottles and takes a dime to dispense them. Works great for beer also.

Wine. Just got back from Italia and I know almost nothing about Italian wines. Brought back some '97 Brunello (Banfi Riserva), some Chianti (yes, chianti - Antinori Badia a Pasignano [sic]), some Barolo, some Barbera, and some Nobile de Montepulciano. I'm working on getting to know Italian wines a lot better. Most of my 600+ bottles are CA wines, with some French, Argentinian, and now Italian thrown in.

And I actually plan on drinking them all instead of selling them.

BTW, if you do choose wine, you should quickly decide on how you're going to keep it. Either a Eurocave style box or creating a small wine room (my choice) is probably necessary for long term lay downs.

I love how Robert describes it as a small wine room.

Unless my memory is completely bonko, doesn't that "small room" hold something like 2500+ bottles ???

2500? Ahhh, no. But I wish.

Reality is that my wine "room" is essentially a closet 6x4x9 and once I build the last rack to replace the HomeDepot rack on one wall I should be able to accommodate about 900+ bottles. Maybe.

I'm currently at about 640 and it's getting a bit crowded. Katy said she's done the math and we need to start drinking more. Oh well, it's a dirty job....

Wine. We are novices compared to Orangeblood. (Robert, what is your prize bottle currently?)

I also collect champagne flutes in pairs.

College Shotglasses -preferably with the school crest.

I've personally purchased over 50 of them, but some have been gifts. I like comparing and contrasting college campuses and this is a little keepsake from my adventures.

I've driven dozens of miles out of the way just to add another shotglass to the collection. About a year or two ago, my shotglasses were displayed at the local Public Library Branch for a month. They weren't a celebration of drinking so much as an inspiration to achieve in school so that you may go to a great college/university.

Some of the ones I have are:
Harvard
Yale
Princeton
Columbia
Brown
Penn
UCLA
Stanford
UC Berkeley
Duke
UNC
Missouri
Texas
Arizona
Arizona St
New Mexico
New Mexico St
A&M
SMU
TCU
Baylor

Fresno State
UC Irvine
UC Santa Barbara
UC San Francisco
U San Francisco

...over 70 in all.
