I need the best value and service. I need the best audio possible. I will buy an expensive phone if sound clarity is superb.

Any ideas? Who to avoid? I live in Austin.

Sprint cuts out in the spots you need it.
Cingular is good but the quality of the call is like a walkie talkie
Nextel Sucks
T-Mobile is cheap and good but calls sound par to sub par.
Verizon- good quality
ATT TDMA- nice sound but expensive

i have cingular and i hate it. my calls drop all the time, and they are constantly messing up on my bill. i also have a ****** motorola flip phone. i've heard AT&T is pretty good - i'm thinking of switching too...

Cingular bought AT&T wireless.

A day after a 6-month period has passed during which Cingular has the right to use the AT&T name, AT&T plans to be back with a service using the AT&T name and service leased from Verizon, Sprint or somebody else.

Prior to the merger, Verizon had the broadest coverage. Cingular/AT&T ought to be comparable now.

I have t-mobile and love it. The difference is in the phone, not the provider.

SearchThe Link for some good advice. I have the nokia 3650. While it is a little large, the reception is excellent. I have 5+ bars on any highway in Austin, and on all major streets. At my apartment complex in far SW Austin I have 5 bars right now. The phone matters far more than your provider.

Verizon has been great for me. I never have problems with reception. Sometimes it is "blinking roaming" is that analog roam??..anyways the term doesn't matter, under my plan it doesn't cost me anything and it is just as good quality. I even used to get reception in Jester and parts of the business school that others didn't.

sprint is building a tower on top of DKR sometime in the summer, i think, so in theory, their service will be better.

still won't ******* work in Welch though, i'm sure.

Really, the key is the phone, I think. I've had Cingular for years. I had a problem not getting reception around my office at 1st and Congress. I went in and bitched, and they gave me a new Sony/Ericcson --- I think model number T62U or something like that, and the thing has been fabulous. I can hang out in conference rooms and make calls while everyone else is huddled around the windows, etc.

Another vote for Verizon, best coverage of any of the carriers.

utgryg27, "blinking roam" isn't really roaming, you are still in digital mode but you are just in an area where you cant get the advanced features like voicemail and text messages.

I did a lot of homework before switching last week from ATT to Verizon. Consensus seems to be Verizon has the best network and clarity. So far I have to say the clarity across the country has been pretty spectacular. Doing some traveling soon so I will know more about the coverage later.

ATT was okay but its really expensive mediocrity.

Everything depends on what city you're in.

I had Cingular in Austin for two years. I can't begin to tell you how much they sucked, so I had plenty of time to research the issue. The day my contract ended (Dec. '03), I switched to Sprint and am much happier now. I also hear good things about Verizon. As for AT&T, I passed on them because they're still implementing their new GSM (or whatever) service and it'll be another year or so before coverage is complete.

I have AT&T and they suck (I'm in Denver). The service is horrible and the customer service is horrible. My contract is up in July and I'm switching to Verizon. It's also my experience that the phone doesn't matter with them. I've had about five and nothing has changed.

I just got on with Cingular and a SonyEricsson T616. It is a great phone, the fiancee and I have a familytalk plan and her little samsung flipphone is definitely not as good.

She says Cingular does not sound as good as her old SprintPCS. We will see.

i have had att with nokias for the past 7 years (come august). I have never had problems with clarity (cept in welch, haha). When you ***** to the att people, you usually get what you want (phones, credits, etc). I've been very happy with them, and my nokia.

What exactly is so bad w/ Nextel? I hear the same as w/ any company, some good some bad. But details please as they are in the running w/ T-Mobil to get my money. I think I would like the walkie-talkie feature, free incoming calls and stuff like that. I also really like the new Motorola phone, the i735 or something like that. Great phone.

T-Mobil is what I had before and other than their customer service being a little bit tweaky and not communicating w/ one another, it was great. The people were friendly, just did not seem to enter what happened or what was said so I had to start from scratch w/ the new person. But, had I paid the bill on time, every time (my other half was not paying their portion so I got stubborn and let it get turned off to prove a point..after 6 bills of me ponying up) then there would be no problem so I cannot really *****. T-Mobil is good.

So I need info to bolster or deflate Nextel's attempt to dethrone T-Mobil. Does anybody know if other companies are going to go the Walkie-Talkie route?

Thanks. Cingular is out as are other companies. It will be one of the two above.

Sprint for 4 years...all in Austin. No problems.

Sprint phones are the best. I've had Samsung, LG, Sanyo, & Touchpoint and all have been fantastic.

You really have to just research it extensively. I see people on here bashing Sprint but I've had them for 4 years with no problems. My wife is on Sprint, most of my friends & coworkers are on Sprint. I have a buddy that just switched to Sprint from Cingular because he said Cingular was horrible as opposed to some good posts here. I recommend going to the consumer's best friend & seeing what he says about the issue...

I've been with Sprint for about 4 year or so and can't complain either. There was some bad reception and dropped calls but that was the fault of the phone and not the carrier, as I found out when I bought a new phone. I am going to try to go to Sprint and get a new deal (the one I have is way old and I'm not on contract). Do you think it would be better to handle that on the phone or go down to a Sprint store? Where would I be more likely to get a better deal?

Which service allows you to have two different numbers billed to the same plan/account? My wife wants to get a new cell phone, but we'd like to consolidate into one plan if possible.

Another vote for Sprint. I've had two Samsung phones and now a Sanyo and they've all been great. Still don't get service in some pockets around Austin, but it's not that big of a deal to me.

Sprint allows you to have up to five phones (with separate #'s) on one account. In fact, that's where you get the best deal, since their individual plans can be pricey.

I've had Sprint since 1999 and never had a problem. I just updated my plan and added another phone. I got a better deal than the original one.
