What are the 'in' bars downtown now?

I'm a bit out of touch. 2 year old son and living in Dallas have changed my habits . . .probably for the better.

But, I will be entertaining some customers at a football game early this fall and need to know where to go.

Cedar Street was okay when it first opened. I suppose that the Cedar Door is still a good joint if you can get around the construction that I saw when I was last there several weeks ago.

6th Street is almost too young for a 35+something crowd.

Any ideas? What's good in the downtown area?

Thanks, Jenna. I'll be using my own ID, though. And, I actually don't mind getting carded anymore. I'm not a big fan of Chuy's anyway. Though I did meet two girlfiends ( on separate occasions fortunately ) at the one here in Dallas on Knox.

Thanks to the rest of you. Cedar Door will probably make the cut. I've seen Star Bar ( down by katz's? ). Probably will narrow the list to Mother Egan's and Speakeasy. I've heard a lot of folks talk about Speakeasy, but have not been there. I really don't like Brewpubs. They overcharge for bad beer.

Polly Esther's won't make the cut in any case. Last time I was there, it was full of euro-trash ( gold chain and armani crowd ) and about five bridesmaids parties. That was shortly after it opened, though. I'm past my prime for dance clubs, anyway.

Besides bad food, what's the hula hut like these days? We probably won't make it over there . . .just curious.

What's the caucus club like?

If you don't like brewpubs, go to the Bitter End and have a meal with one of their crafted beers. They just might change your mind. Also, it's right there in the warehouse district near some of the bars mentioned above.

Driskill bar didn't impress me last time. But maybe I was there at the wrong time - - - 8-10 PM on Saturday night.

Nice atmosphere . .. but no one was there . .. and it was kinda pricey for a "dead" bar. That's typical of hotel bars, though.

Friday night I went to "Swig" (I think that's the name). It's between Bitter End and Spaghetti Wharehouse. Pretty laid back martini-type bar. It is a great date spot, or group spot if you're looking to relax. It's owned by the same people that own Cool River.

Dex -- I think the Caucus Club is no longer with us.

The Speakeasy has been one of the best bars in town for a long, long time. It should always be in your clubbing plans.

Brown Bar is always a good place to impress. (Dinner at Gumbo's next door is pretty good, too). During the Legislative session it was a place where a fair number of the Senators hung out. It also helps that the bartenders are, bar none, babes. Don't go there looking for cheap drinks, however.

Dex,

I saw on the news last night where the Cedar Door has moved to Toomey Road (just S. of the river, before you get to Barton Springs, and the road runs behind Chuys). Should reopen April 1st,

yeah, Ceder street is literally in the center of a trailor park now.
-What about Whisky Bar ? It has been really busy in the times I have been there

Heavy handed bars: Star Bar, Club Deville, Brown Bar. The pour drinks that will grow hair on your saddlehorn.

Dex, if you've had bad brewpub beer, you're going to the wrong one. Bitter End is quite good, they've got the hardware(multiple medals from the Great American Beer Festival) to prove it. Give 'em a try.
It'll give you a taste of what real beer is all about.

doh! My bad, I just forgot that's what they called it, I went there a lot. Brain fart on the southpaw side of the ol' street. Too damn bad about Waterloo.
