What a difference in Tournament Atmosphere

Watching Clemson vs UNC - the noise level is deafening - as if both teams are home teams. Imagine that! A Conference Tournament where fans of all over are in attendance and actually care about the games being played.

And the Big East is just as loud and active as the ACC.

Contrast that this evening to the Big 12. It will be like comparing a Rock Concert to a Wake - and one that will have empty seats as well as folks sitting on their hands.

think about the coverage though. the ACC is a very small area of the country compared to the BIG 12 which probably covers more area than any other conference in america. you can probably drive from any school to any school in the ACC within 12 hours.

outside of miami to maryland.... you can even get from florida states campus to marylands in about 13 hours.

Clemson kind of let this get away from them like teams sometimes do. Got to hand it to NC tho, they made some clutch plays to send this to OT.

Was a good game. First time UNC was ahead was in OT.

, your point is well taken. I guess we just have a sprawling geographic area. But, obviously too, the devout basketball fans are just not here in volume like they are in the ACC and SEC.

I have been to Big XII Championship events in Dallas, football, basketball and baseball. All have been outstanding atmospheres. I think it is a function of the location and the alumni base. Dallas has a large alumni base of most Big XII schools. Makes for a great atmosphere. Much better than Kansas City or Oklahoma City.

Somebody who has been to these events please comment as I have not been to KC for this type of event. OKC sucked balls unless your team was in the game.

How many layups, treys, defensive stops, etc do the "loud Fans" make?

Old sayings:
Coaches coach, players play, and fans complain. OK I may have made that last part up... On the other hand, I have evidence that bears me out. :)

I've been to two or three in KC, and I can tell you the place is an armpit. It's cold, there's absolutely no life around the stadium, even the "fan zones" are just bleak. The atmosphere is great in the arena if you're Kansas or Missouri, pretty much everyone else is a minor player.

The Dallas atmosphere is infinitely better outside and in - I loved listening to the KC media whine and complain about how much better things were back home, and I wondered if any of them had ever actually attended as a fan. Better arena, better fan support, better location, better everything. The only thing KC had over Dallas was being able to get cheesesteaks at the concession stand.

Interesting. Atmosphere experienced in Dallas for all games was pretty sterile. Have you been to the tournament in KC since it's moved to Sprint because as a volunteer every fan from every school I've spoken with gives huge compliments to the atmosphere outside the arena with P&L district.

Better fan support? Attendance numbers don't show that at all.

KU is good....their fans travel throughout the conference and a championship game with them in it will have a huge KU fanbase no matter where it is. Wish my team could have beat CU and then KU so we would have played again.

Sorry, but it wasn't exactly like that in Dallas. If the conference tourney were in San Antonio those people would have a heart attack.

yall are fing stoned or just big homers if you want to bad mouth Power and Light district (directly) across from the Sprint Center. It's a bad *** party and tons of fun. I had a fing blast at Mcfaddens friday night.

OK I'll admit, my experiences are when it was at Kemper. It may be a totally different situation now, that's just how it was when I was there. As far as empty seats at Dallas, there are plenty of empty seats in KC as well, the difference is that you have a better representation across the board from fans.

I think one of the disadvantages in terms evaluating "atmosphere" is we typically see it how TV translates it. It seems a lot more lively when they selectively shoot, have the camera guy there waving people on and getting them to wave at the TV. I've been to probably half dozen NCAA tournaments aside from the SWC and Big XII, and I really don't see that much difference in atmosphere between them other than what might be generated by a big-time matchup or a regional final.

Kemper vs. Sprint is absolute night-and-day. There is no comparison.

I think the biggest intangible difference between KC and Dallas hosting the tournament is that when it is in Kansas City, EVERYONE in the area is focused on the tournament. Everyone is talking about it, everyone is flying their school flag, wearing their school gear, every TV and radio station is talking about it.

In Dallas, it gets slightly more attention than when the circus comes to town. Sure, it gets some attention, but it's still fighting for airtime between the Stars, Mavs and even the Cowboys.

Is KC just a hick town with less to do and Dallas has more going for it? Probably. But what that means for the tournament atmosphere is significant.

I dont know if the sound compared but the old SWC tourney was a totally kick *** fan experience.

Abe Lemmons v. Eddie Sutton were do not miss affairs. And Guy Lewis brought some teams too. Fun times.
