Pretty cool match play event taking place this week.

Bracket

Tiger tied for 9th the last 2 years, finished 17th in 05, and last won the WGC match play event in 04 and 03 as well.

Tiger has won his 1st 2 events this year....Buick and Dubai.

He started out shaky in 1st round. 3 down with 5 holes to play against 16th seed Holmes Tiger won 4 out of last 5 holes to win the match 1 UP. 2nd round Tiger started out strong and was 3 UP at the turn before winning 3 and 2.

Top seeds already gone:
1 Els (1st round)
1 Mickelson (2nd round)
2 Sabbatini (1st round)
2 Scott (2nd round)
2 Rose (1st round)
2 Furyk (1st round)
3 Garcia (2nd round)
3 Harrington (2nd round)
4 Johnson (1st round)
4 Ogilvy (1st round)

Top seeds remaining:
1 Woods
1 Stricker
3 Choi
3 Singh
4 Stenson
4 Cabrera

Some great 3rd round matches today including:
1 Woods vs. 5 Baddeley
1 Stricker vs. 4 Cabrera

If Tiger advances a matchup vs. 3 Choi will be a tough test.

Appleby and Singh would make another great Quarter final matchup in next round. Appleby played amazing to knock of Phil in 2nd round. Phil was 4 under thru 1st 9 but Appleby played even better at 5 under to lead 1 UP after 9....then wins 2 of last 3 holes to win the match.

With another WGC event scheduled in a month and The Masters soon after that we shall see if Tiger can keep up his dominance. HIs game is definitely as good as ever right now.

Wow wish I could have seen that 3rd round match.

Tiger birdies 1, 2, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 17, 19, 20, and one of 13 or 16 which was conceeed. Lone bogey on 4. By my count that is 11 under par thru 20 holes.

Baddeley kept up with birdies on 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13 or 16, 14, 17, and 19. Lone bogey on 5. By my count that is 9 under par thru 20 holes.

Of course strokes under par doesn't matter in a match play event and that is why Baddeley twice had puts in final 3 holes to win it.

Tiger turned it up when needed birding 3 of the final 4 holes, winning one of them, and thus the match.

Quarterfinal matchups:
1 Woods
vs.
3 Choi

4 Stenson
vs.
10 Austin

13 Leonard
vs.
3 Singh

4 Cabrera
vs.
6 Sink

Singh went 25 holes but just about everyone else won easily. Wonder if those extra holes will cause any hangover into this next round?

Choi has been starting strong but doesn't usually finish great . Hasn't played the 1st stretch of the back 9 well at all yet.

Tiger beats Choi 3 and 2, then beats Stenson 2 UP.

It is Tiger vs. Cink in the final. Cink has been on a roll and absolutely crushing everyone so far this bracket. Should be a good final.

Yeh it looked like VJ was about to walk off and realized the match was over and he needed to shake Justin's hand. Awesome.

I don't know if I could sit thru a match play event final. But maybe I'll tape it and fast forward through the downtime.

Un-freaking-real...Tiger is definitely locked in this year. 3 tournaments played and 3 wins...and 8 of the last 9 stretching back to last year. Can't wait to see what he does in the majors.

Tiger is locked-in BIGTIME...I think he is going to be really hot at the Masters. With the game he is playing, the Masters really sets up for him to win.

He is really something to watch right now. Anytime really.

I think this is the best Tiger we have ever seen. He went on a run in 00 that was pretty amazing as well.

His all-time win% is approaching 30% now. Just a shade over 29% currently. Adding in a 10% rate of running 2nd and about 40% of the time he finishes 1st or 2nd. Worldside it is slightly better than that.

Tiger has won 6 of his last 7 PGA events (this included 1 major and 2 WGC events) and finished 2nd at Deutsche Bank. In the process he also won his Target World Challenge, the Dubai, The Presidents Cup, and oh yes, the Fed Ex Cup.

Tiger is so far ahead as the #1 player in the world it is ridiculous. Even last year when they started that Fed Ex Cup thing they rebalanced the rankings (ala NASCAR) and he laughably skipped an event and still won.

Here is a good recent article on ESPN regarding Tiger's dominance at WGC events:
Woods dominates WGC Events

Overall Tiger has won 7 of the last 10 WGC events, 15 of 26 total, and finished runner-up twice. He has won 12 of 17 stroke play WGC events.

That was also win #63 for Tiger who is 1 behind Ben Hogan for 3rd all-time and puts him a solid 10 behind Jack for 2nd.

do wgc events count in his win total or just pga events? or is this both? either way, the guy is ridiculous. when he first turned pro, i couldn't stand the constant tiger coverage, but his game turned me into a fan years ago.

He is getting more and more comfortable with his swing. Its going to be interesting to see how long his winning streak lasts.

The WGC events are PGA events so the wins count as PGA wins. Some of the WGC events were old PGA events. They are designed to be almost like mini majors and they do often attract more of the top talent in the world than you see at majors. However the courses in general aren't as tough as the majors and some of the WGC events are match play.

oh it's just a personal vendetta really from a scolding he gave me and some buddies at the Tucson Open about 4-5 years ago.

we were there to support our buddy Ricky Barnes and they were paired together. we had gotten something to eat from a concession stand and were sitting about 30 yards from the green eating while they were putting. Oberholser, while he was walking around LOOKING at his putt, not even putting, stopped and shouted over "HEY GUYS, SOME OF US ARE TRYING TO WORK AROUND HERE!". Ricky confirmed to us later that he was a prick. maybe it was just a bad day for him, who knows. he finished that week in the top ten and it was his first year on the bigboy tour, so he should have been in a happy mood.

and no, we weren't talking loud or doing anything terribly distracting...if memory serves it was actually the crinkling of some wrappers that finally made him snap.
