# 8 (AP)/# 7 (Coaches) Texas will host RV (AP)/RV (Coaches) West Virginia this Sunday at 1:30 PM. Before this conference season, WVU had won both neutral court games. WVU and Texas had not lost on their respective home courts. WVU held a 3-5 edge in the series. Texas won in WVU in the first game this season to be the first team to win on the other’s home court in the series. Now, Texas will look to be the first to sweep a season series and even the overall series at 5-5.
The WVU Mountaineers bring two players scoring in double figures to Austin. Bria Holmes (# 23, 6-1 Sr. G) scores at 15.7 ppg clip. Tynice Martin (# 5, 5-10 Fr. G) brings a 10.9 ppg average. Teana Muldrow (# 11, 6-1 Soph. F) adds 9.0 ppg. Holmes (77-163; 47.2%) and Muldrow (58-165; 35.2%) are the leading shooters for WVU. Among players that have taken at least 10 FGs, Lanay Montgomery (# 15, 6-5 Jr. C) has the highest FG% at 56.3% (45-80). Muldrow is second at 50.6% (41-81). Seven of the nine players that average double minutes have taken at least 22 3s. Martin (16-64; 25.0%) and Holmes (18-53; 34.0%) are the main shooters from BTA. Jessica Morton (# 21, 5-10 Sr. G) has the best 3pt FG% at 42.9% (12-28). Muldrow (9-23; 39.1%) and Alexis Brewer (# 2, 5-9 Fr. G; 8-22; 36.4%) are the other sharpshooters from BTA for the Mountaineers. Holmes has taken 77 FTs, 46 more than Muldrow, who is second in FT attempts at 31. Holmes has made 48 for 62.3%. Martin is perfect from the line at 20-20 as is Katrina Pardee (# 22, 5-9 Fr. G) who has hit six of six. Morton is the only other Mountaineer over 70% from the FT line at 73.9% (17-23).
Arielle Roberson (# 32, 6-1 Sr. F) and Montgomery are a potent one-two duo in rebounding. Roberson averages 9.9 rpg while Montgomery adds 7.9 rpg. Muldrow (5.0 rpg) and Holmes (4.6 rpg) provide a lot of support on the boards for the Big 12’s third ranked rebounding team. Holmes doubles as the Mountaineers’ assist leader with 47 asssists. That’s 20 plus more than either Chania Ray (# 12, 5-8 Soph. G) who has 27 and Martin with 23. Montgomery is second in the league in blocks with 35. Roberson (18), Muldrow (15) and Holmes (13) have also reached double digit blocks. Roberson is second in the Big 12 in steals with 32. Martin (16 steals), Holmes (14 steals) and Ray (10 steals) also shine in this category.
Holmes, Montgomery, Pardee and Ray have started 14 of 14 Big 12 games. Roberson has 13 starts in 13 games, missing the second Baylor game. Muldrow has played in 12 conference games with one start coming in the second Baylor game. Joining Muldrow in coming off the bench are Martin, Morton and Brewer. These nine players all average over 11 mpg. Holmes (34.0 mpg) and Roberson (30.2 mpg) log the most mpg. Muldrow is the main frontcourt sub for Roberson and Montgomery while Martin, Morton and Brewer rotate in on the backcourt.
Imani (12.7 ppg), Brooke (11.4 ppg) and Ariel (10.4 ppg) combine for almost half of the 69.9 ppg that Texas is averaging through 14 Big 12 games. Imani (66-128; 51.6%), Empress (38-123; 30.9%), Brooke (54-122; 44.3%) and Ariel (53-99; 53.5%) lead the team in FGs made-FGs attempted. Ariel has the highest FG% (53.5%) while Kelsey (43-82; 52.4%) and Imani (51.6%) continue to make over half their shots. For the Horns, Brooke provides the main 3pt threat (27-62; 43.5%) while Celina (12-42; 28.6%), Ariel (10-32, 31.3%), Empress (10-32; 31.3%) and Brady (4-14; 28.6%) provide additional firepower from BTA. Brady (10-12; 83.3%), Imani (45-55; 81.8%), Ariel (30-37; 81.1%), Kelsey (16-20; 80.0%), Jordan (11-14; 78.6%) and Empress (29-38; 76.3%) make the Horns one of the top teams in FT%.
Along with OSU’s Brittney Martin, Imani is one of two Big 12 players averaging double doubles in league play. Imani adds 10.2 rpg to her team leading 12.7 ppg. Kelsey is second at 4.8 rpg while Brianna and Celina each grabs 4.6 rpg. Celina is the assist leader at 4.8 apg while both Brooke and Empress average 2.1 apg. Brianna has 24 steals to rank first on the team. Celina has 21 steals while Brooke (15), Ariel (14) and Imani (10) have all reached double figures in steals. Imani is the league’s leading shot blocker with 57 blocks. Kelsey is second with 18 blocks.
Imani, Brooke and Empress have 14 starts in 14 Big 12 games. Celina has 13 starts in 14 games Ariel (4 starts) , Brianna (9 starts) and Kelsey (2 starts) have the other starts in league games. Brady has played in 11 games, averaging 10.4 games. LaShann has seen action in 12 games for 9.5 mpg. Jordan has gotten into 13 games at 8.8 mpg. Tasia is the last player to see the floor in double digit games, getting into 10 at 6.0 mpg. Among the top seven, Brooke is playing 31.5 mpg. Imani, Ariel, Empress, Celina and Brianna all average over 20 mpg. Kelsey is just short of 20 mpg at 19.8.
Projected starting lineup based on the last game:
Texas______________WVU
Imani (6-7)________ Montgomery (6-5)
Ariel (5-11)_______ Roberson (6-1)
Empress (5-9)_____ Holmes (6-1)
Celina (5-8)_______ Pardee (5-9)
Brooke (5-4)______ Ray (5-8)
Imani and Kelsey will go up against another top frontcourt combo in Montgomery and Roberson. This might be a game where we see Imani and Kelsey play together at times. Horns were able to keep Holmes below her scoring average in the first game while WVU had problems matching up with Ariel. WVU kept it close with both Morton and Martin hitting three treys apiece. Imani clogged up the middle with 14 rebounds and six blocks. Both teams will find it hard to score inside with the league’s top two shot blockers in the game. Imani and Montgomery will not only block shots, they will alter even more shots. The key for both will be to stay out of foul trouble. Although WVU has no one taller than 6-1 to replace Montgomery while Texas can rotate both Kelsey and Sara in if Imani gets in foul trouble. WVU’s 6-6 Fr. C Marlena Schmidt (# 45) appears to be redshirting this year as she has not played in the first 27 games.

Like pretty much every game in this series, this should be another close game. WVU doesn’t exactly live and die by the three, but they do take about 20 threes a game. Combine that with the fact that they will be facing the top shot blocker in the league and they might be tempted to take a few more from behind the arc. Texas will be in a similar position as Montgomery is the second ranked shot blocker. Shots inside will be tough to come by for both teams. Texas has a slight edge in making FTs (71.1% to 65.3%) and in getting to the FT line (20.4 to 17.7). Horns had a very poor FT shooting game in Morgantown (9-19; 47.4%) but still managed to win 65-54. Which team gets to the FT line and takes advantage there could determine which way the game goes.
