We're Spoiled

...and that's a good thing.

I never post here because I am a basketball idiot who only watches some of the games. I'm not posting now to tell people how they should feel, particularly you guys who live and die with every shot and rebound.

But as I was wallowing in my annoyance and disappointment in how this season has slid into low expectations and recriminations, I did have one thought:

I can't remember the last season that didn't have a large number of shining moments and pure pleasure in just watching the Horns play. In this winter of discontent, I must admit that there have been a lot of winters of more than mere contentment.

We're at a place where we damn well expect to see better next season if not something made of the end of this season.

Maybe it's the mix of players and talents this year, I don't know. But the big picture is still pretty damn bright.

I don't know that all of this needs saying, I just feel like saying it. And I'm not criticizing any other fans for how they feel.

my friends.

I too have high expectations, but didn't have the same coming into this season considering the circumstances. Was I hoping we would somehow make things click better? Yes.

I hope Barnes can continue to bring in talent and develop it as fast as it leaves and that the one final four was not a one time thing. I expect that he will.

i didnt have high expectations for football or basketball this year, basketball has been down as expected even after a great start. Football overachieved.

That being said this team may be the worse we've had in 6 or so years and it would beat any of the teams of the tom penders era (except maybr the 1996 team)

The so-called BMW team of 1989-1990 era (Travis Mays, Lance Blanks, and Joey Wright) would have beaten this year's team by 30. I'd guess most of Penders' teams would beat this year's version. All but two or three Penders teams won first round games in the NCAA tournament. I don't think tis team will achieve that. Again Barnes is great. But Penders wasn't at all bad.

RomaVicta...you have expressed my sentiments exactly except for the fact that my husband and I do attend all the home games and have for many years. This has been a painful year for those of us who have become accustomed to as you put it..."pure pleasure in just watching the Horns play".
Well said.

Spoiled for sure! But still, how in the world is it possible that some fans can't comprehend the fact that no team in the history of any sport has been immune to what the Horns are experience this year. Yeah, we're Texas...and we're just having an "off" year due to circumstances that RB can't solve with the players that have chosen to stick around. It happens. Any of you guys follow our Baseball team?

And how is it that hard to understand that these so called fans actually know what they are talking about? Barnes has done a TERRIBLE job of coaching this year in all facets of the word. Balbay should have started earlier, he screwed up with the Landesburg situation and had to bring in Ward (who is reasonably useless as a freshman). He has used AJ in almost every way possible and none of them have been very good consistently unless AJ is absolutely feeling it. We have almost no decent plays that ever result in an easy shot.

Yes, the team has deficiencies...WE GET THAT. The point is that it is still a talented team, especially athletically, defensively, and inside. None of those three things have been utilized in the proper manner. My God, have we tried a high-low play more than 3 times the entire season??? How easy would it be for Gary or Damion to have the threat of that high post jumper, the defender have to guard him, and dump the ball inside to Dex? Every freakin' time that would work.

Mason has been starting for the entire season while a revolving door has been going on everywhere else...sorry to say but J is doing next to nothing for the second year in a row now. He's been coached down for 3 years!!! I had a friend watch a UT preseason practice when Durant was a freshman here...he said Mason was our second best player and was impossible to guard. Remember that Gonzaga game? He poured in 17 points and looked like a star. Now he can't dribble with his left hand, can't shoot because he's too afraid of the repercussions, can't pass like he used to be able to, and even his defense has been only a little better than par of late.

You can say that we are stupid for having too high of expectations every year, but there's no reason this team should EVER lose to K-State, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, or Arkansas...

I don't know about "EVER" but the point is there.

I don't think they try the high-low much because that requires James and Johnson to pass while closely guarded. That is no sure thing, unfortunately.

Wow..just because I can point our deficiencies and Barnes' errors doesn't mean I could:

A) Solve them effectively

B) Coach in other facets of the game

C) Recruit in any way

Yes, I know some of the things that are wrong...most fans do. Some of the fixes seem patently obvious, and I'm surprised they have not been attempted/weren't done earlier. But I am certainly not qualified to coach the team.

I will argue to the death, though, that I could have done a better job of play calling in at least one of our football games than Greg Davis...That I have zero doubts about.

I've been upset with Barnes this year...heck, I was upset with Barnes in the middle of last year.

There's still no one I'd rather have as a coach. His teams on the offensive end often make me want to peel my skin off and go swimming in a vat of rubbing alcohol, but he's amazing at challenging the people around them to be their best.

On the other hand, his method for doing so often leads to a lack of confidence in the players under his tutelage, and as a fan that can be frustrating to watch. This whole season has been frustrating. I'm looking forward to next year.
