Wendy Davis put foot in mouth again.

She went for the race card due to being so desperate. She tweeted that Abbott is against interracial marriage. Someone needs to tell Abbott that he married a Hispanic woman.

I'm so glad that she has zero chance at becoming Governor of the Best State in the country.

Yeah whoever is in charge of her social media relations should be fired for sure.

If she wanted to help her cause, she should have just linked the report about Abbott's comments on gay marriage. He specifically stated that he didn't have to comment on interracial marriage because it's something that has already been declared unconstitutional, unlike gay marriage. But tweeting "Abbott won't respond to interracial marriage ban" twists the whole meaning and makes her look like an idiot.

I just want to blow it up and start over. I don't want Abbott or Davis or Dan Patrick or anyone else representing my interests at a state level. Just get a bunch of moderate candidates who won't do anything for 4 years and keep them around.

Of course, this was in response to a question from a reporter about whether as attorney general Abbott would defend a state ban on interracial marriage.

I'll come right out and say it: if I'm a state attorney general, and the legislature passes such a law, then I will defend it. That's their damn job.

Democrats are in full favor of legislating from the bench, and this fits that mantra like a glove. Meanwhile, the idiots lap it up.

And that hussy reporter for the San Antonio newspaper was laying a trap for Abbott, but I think he answered the question quite well. She was trying to tie this in to gay marriage, by the way.

Of course, any attorney general that had a legislature pass such a law would know 100 percent that it would not withstand judicial scrutiny, but it would be his job, nonetheless. That, in a nutshell, was Abbott's answer.

I think Abbott is a POS, but anyone who is being honest with themselves knows that the only reason Wendy Davis is even in this position is because she wore pink shoes and decided to philibuster all night in a diaper for abortion. If she hadnt done that little trick, it would be someone else in her place. Shes an Abortion celebrity, and frankly thats why she is going to lose, regardless of any other good ideas she has.

This isn't the first time the Davis camp (or her Democrat handlers) tried to goad Greg Abbott into taking a stance contrary to legislative action.

I recall that after the state district judge ruled against the state in the public school funding case, Democrats excoriated Abbott for not seeking a settlement.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't such a settlement between a state district court and the state attorney general require legislative approval? That would never happen, even if Abbott decided to pull an Eric Holder and go rogue.

She was going to be the dem nominee for governor as a result of the filibuster against the education cuts a couple of years before. Nobody else wanted the nomination anyway and she set herself up nicely for the nomination by trying to derail the education cuts. In fact, she would have been better off if she had not filbustered the abortion bill. The people who liked her for that would vote democratic if the dems nomniated a chupacabra.

And marrying a hispanic does not mean you are not opposed to interracial marriage. Hispanics are not a different race from whites, merely a different ethnic group from us northern european types..

The only reason she got the nomination was the outcrying of national support after her failure in the abortion filibuster. Nobody and I mean nobody remembers the education filibuster, of which almost 0 teachers were let go to begin with, but that is another story.....

Davis is an idoit but I am not uphauled by it...

Look, when we have 2 candidates from the 2 parties many of us don't like, we need an alternative... where is Kinky when we need him!!

The "cut " was actually a cut in the increase. The budget actually did increase over the previous one.

but you mentioned this
'The cuts also seemed indiscriminate and unfair to districts already doing more with less"

Does the legislature actually apportion the amounts by each district?

And yes the state funds districts differently. My district gets 1k less per student per year than a similar district that borders ours. It costs the same to educate a kid in each place. School finance gets much more complicated than that when you start adding federal, state, local, and bond money into the equation. School finance needs a complete overhaul and we have that opportunity in 2017. The current target revenue system that 80% of districts are funded by will sunset in that year.

thanks for the info
It looks like the one time Fed funds that were available from the 09 stimulus package, 3.3 billion, were not available from the Feds in 11. So even though the state budget was increased the loss of that big chunk of federal funds is hard to over come.

The good news is that in 2013 the Lege with a better economy increased the education budget 3.4 billion.

and with the economy continuing to improve the 2015 Lege will increase the education budget even more.
I am sure it was difficult to live through leaner times in 12-13.

When I see kids spending a week in Austin for Drama Competitions staying at a 5 Star Hotel for 40 minutes of show, I have a problem with the amount of money being spent in schools.

I would like to see the Senator from Oklahoma come down and show us how much money is being wasted on what within the Texas Public School system!

I remember the Dallas ISD using there Corporate cards to buy Big Screen TV's for their homes and other crap like that......

I remember the Lewisville ISD spending millions of dollars being the leader of ATM technology back in the mid-1990's when that was new technology. Turns out, ATM was not the next big thing, what a waste of money!!!

No doubt the corruption waste and fraud in most school districts could provide enough money per student to do a lot of good IF it could ever reach the student.
Today the Dallas morning news reported a crony real estate firm of a crooked DISD trustee was paid a commission rate of 9% instead of the normal 3-6 and didn't appear to actually do anything.

Not long ago DISD spent 5K to take black grade schoolers ( male only ) to see the Tuskegee airmen movie etc etc etc

so yes way too much money gets wasted which hurts people like larry T who as a conscientious teacher sees less $ per pupil on paper but likely doesn't get to see the sheer waste.
Why for instance did we taxpayers need to spend money to send 100 admin people to a 5star luxury resort in Grapevine for a single meeting.
DISD is not the only one wasting money. some of the ISDs in the valley ( which receive robin Hood funds) make Disd look like a piker.

I'd like to say ISDs learned some fiscal responsibility during the 12-13 schools years when they didn't get the large increases they think they deserve but I know better.

Its a pointless to argue apples and oranges when talking about school district wasteful spending. Look at the FAST ratings and compare districts. Dallas ISD scored a 28. My district scored an 85. Should we be lumped together when its time for cuts? If you screw over the lean districts when its time for cuts, then you are only encouraging the waste. For many republicans it has nothing to do with saving money, only a sick satisfaction they get out of screwing over who they see as the enemy.

Edit: the 85 vs 28 is the amount of progress the students made. They compare that to the level of spending. Average for my district, high for dallas ISD. We got 4 stars as our composite ranking, dallas got 2.

that is crap and should be changed
but in a way it suggests your district can get by on less but based on how awful they do poor ol DISD ( etc ad nauseum) needs more. maybe y'all shouldn't do good jobs.
You have a very legitimate complaint and I don't know enough about how the education budget is doled out to comment
However with a new lege and many new members I bet someone would be willing to take on the inequity of distribution if there is a fairer way to do it. As long as you don't run into poorer districts looking like they are getting less
