Well so much for the new timing rule

I can't remember but didn't this game go at least 3:30? I know about halftimes etc but does anyone have the official time for the game?

The only thing the new timing rule did was cause the buffoons doing the telecast to miss the start of dozens of Texas plays.

The box score says

Kickoff time: 6:07 pm End of Game: 9:30 pm Total elapsed time: 2:23

Which is bad math. At best, the new clock rules will save 10-15 minutes of game time, and I doubt even that. The only thing that will cut game time is cutting the commercial breaks.

I apologize if I wasn't clear with my question. I was looking at total elapsed time from Kickoff to final gun (with commericals/halftime etc in between). So it was around 3:23 total time. What were the game time averages last year?

So overall has anyone written if the "average" game time changed much? I realize it's only one weekend of games but just curious.

You know.. we wait about 8 1/2 months for OUR college football... we drive for hours to get to the game.. we tailgate.. we buy paraphanalia... I dont WANT the game to go by faster! It's not like frickin baseball which is a year round sport.

Stop the Madness.

If the NCAA were truly trying to shorten game times, they'd give us the 12 min. NFL halftime, rather than 20 min.

The reason for the length of this, and many other college game, vs. the NFL is the higher scores. More scoring = more stops = more commercials = longer game.

Comparing the length of this game with the Arkie St. game doesn't work because it was a lower scoring game. Compare it with our opener in '04 and '05 instead - I haven't but I'd like to see the results.

I think the new rule was more about consistency in the time between plays than actually shortening the game. With the old rule, a ref could wait as long as he wanted before winding the clock again and its was very inconsistent from crew to crew and game to game.

Pre timing changes:
2005 Opener (60-3)
Kickoff time: 6:10 om End of Game: 9:28 pm Total elapsed time: 3:18

2005 v. Rice (51-10)
Kickoff time: 6:10 pm End of Game: 9:27 pm Total elapsed time: 3:17

For comparison:

A&M v. ASU (not on TV, 18-14):
Kickoff time: 6:05 PM End of Game: 9:03 PM Total elapsed time: 2:58

Angelo St v. Texas State (not on TV, 21-14):
Kickoff time: 6:00 pm End of Game: 8:38pm Total elapsed time: 2:38

OU v. Chattanooga (PPV, 57-2, 1:12 weather delay)
Kickoff time: 6:10 pm End of Game: 10:19 pm Total elapsed time: 4:09

Illinois v. Mizzou (ESPN, 52-42)
Kickoff time: 7:36 pm End of Game: 11:15 pm Total elapsed time: 3:39

Tech v. Eastern Wash (No TV, 49-24)
Kickoff time: 6:00 pm End of Game: 9:40 pm Total elapsed time: 3:40

One of my favorite games was awhile back against Houston.
I think it was the infamous "cowbell" game because of the noise.
It lasted about 5 hours and I think there was about 1200 yards of offense between the two teams.
I gnawed my fingernails off and Texas finally pulled it out.
Who says we need or want the games shorter?
Leave the freakin games alone.

with 1:20 left in the first quarter I told my wife I needed to go in and get a drink before the halftime crowd. I was shocked when I realized it wasn't even 2nd quarter (in my defense, from 5-730 or so I was in awe of the NEZ Club). game took forever. not that I had anything better going on

I want more football, not less.

Leave the game alone!

The forty second clock is fine but restarting the game clock on out of bounds plays when the ball is set is ridiculous. I know this does not happen in the last 2 minutes but it should not happen at all.

Ever notice how the only people that complain about the length of the game is the media. I have never heard a fan complain about it.
