Welcome Black Knights (Army)

We might draw some folks from Fort Hood. It's not often that they get a chance to see a REAL Army team playing in Central Texas ...

I wouldn't mind if these Cadets marched down Congress Ave!

Hey Y'All,Thanks for the welcome. I'm really looking forward to my time in Austin this weekend, my friends have always told me it's the best town in Texas.

I've already experienced some Texas hospitality and been invited to a tailgate and given helpful hints on parking, eating (something I'm vastly overqualified on), and stuff.

Hopefully, we'll get a couple of chances to play Texas this weekend! You'll see two traits from our team this weekend that I believe you'll appreciate, considering the next stop on their journey through life...We play very, very hard...and we NEVER give up.

Pardon the following intrusion into your fine board, but (you knew that was coming)

GO ARMY! WE OWN THE DIRT!

Impossible to talk smack about Real Army (unlike, say, our fake army friends to the east). Looking forward to a hard-fought game on Friday night!

CPLZ, luckily we don't have any dirt...well, there is the pitcher's mound.

Welcome to Austin. Be sure and make the rounds...there should be plenty of food and refreshments for you. Glad Army made it into the tournament and I'm glad to have them in our bracket. I'm looking forward to seeing some good baseball and meeting some good fans like you, over the weekend.

I just left a message on some West Point website suggesting they pass the word that the game is available live & free in the Internet. If anyone has any ideas about how to make this known to not only West Point students, but, also, to Army bases around the world, I'm sure some folks would be mighty glad they found out about it. There are still some Longhorn fans just recently discovering this great service.

Is that on the TexasSports.TV that it's live and free?

And BTW, Gravity is not just a good idea, it's the LAW!

CPLZ,

We look forward to having Army in our bracket. It will be a privilege and a pleasure to welcome you to Austin, The University of Texas, and Disch-FALK Field.

And I love a man in uniform! One reason it's nice living close to Fort Hood ...

It is always a strange feeling seeing your favorite team play a service academy. Cheering against West Point just feels wrong.

Anyway I cannot wait to see the game on Friday. Welcome to all you Army fans/alums/cadets who will be attending.

I'd personally like to invite any and all army fans to the outfield for tailgating before, during and after the games.

For those that don't know, a road runs about 15 yards from the right and center field fence. Party busses are parked along it with decks on top for viewing the game. Basically, it is the bleachers for Disch-Falk. Come on by for some bbq and cold beverages. We'll be there around 9 am on Friday.

CPLZ-welcome to the board, and hope your visit to Austin is enjoyable. I know you will find many welcoming fans at different tailgates at the Disch-Falk parking lots prior to the games.
Enjoyed the scouting report above. Any Army fans have other players to watch? Does the left-hander slated to start Friday mainly throw curves and change-ups, or more of a fast baller?

Currently we are the #21 hitting team in the country. Until just recently (we played a last minute DH last weekend that the players just didn't get up for), we had three players hitting over .400, Joey Henshaw, soph DH/LHP/backup 1B that is a mountain of a man at 6'7" 260, Kevin McKague, soph, 1b/closer, and Clint Moore, soph, SS and Wallace Watch list finalist. Moore hits 3rd, McKague and Henshaw flip flop 4/5.

Our leadoff hitter is Zach Price, Fr, 2b, that hits .370 and is the best two strike hitter I've yet seen at Army. Solid all around player.

We field at a .969 clip on all grass surfaces (some cow pastures too), so we can pick it pretty well.

We're young, with only 3 upperclass starters and 1 upperclass in the rotation, but almost all these guys started as Frosh so they have some experience.

Our seniors, Polchinski 3B, Ernesto CF, and Fleming RF, are all streaky hitters. Polchinski especiallycan be a game wrecker, although the other two have been very clutch when we need the big hit.

We're solid with the sticks up and down the lineup. Despite being just a freshman catcher, JT Watkins is excellent defensively, and is composed beyond his years in handling the pitchers and showing leadership.

Traditionally, we are a slow starting team at the beginning of seasons and ramp it up through conference play...this year was no exception. We won't rattle, won't quit, and are relentless in attack.

Fouch is a three pitch guy. He can throw them all for strikes and has good late movement on his FB. My first instinct is to call him a fastballer, but I think that's a bit inaccurate as his best quality is keeping hitters off balance.

As I've said before, you'll see a lot of admirable qualities in these guys, ones that will serve them well in their next endeavor.

Pay attention to what CPLZ says. I visited their website. They have players from all over the country. When you visit their website, the intro says "The Road to Omaha Begins Now". They are not coming here on vacation, these guys are good.

Good report, CPLZ. Really looking forward to Friday now. We better not overlook Army, sounds like they aren't just here to show up in a regional. A good left-hander who can throw three pitches for strikes can give UT trouble.

Response from the Army Athletics Website:

Thank you for your e-mail, and for letting us know about the option for watching the baseball games online. I will forward your info to our sports media department. Thanks again and take care, Go Army!!

Respectfully,

By-the-way, I spoke with the communications office today to a very polite and well-informed woman. She said we are awaiting NCAA approval before the game is posted on texassports.tv. She assured me it's a rubber stamp process, but necessary. It should be posted under "Live Events" tomorrow or Friday at the latest (given that the game is Friday night).

The Black Knights always* triumph!!!

* Except when playing the Texas Longhorns in an NCAA baseball regional or pitted against King Arthur in a swordfight to the death.

Some good stuff on Army's athletics website.

A "diary" from one of their players regarding the team's experiences in Austin so far, a similar blog from one of their traveling staffers, and other information. I thought it was interesting to read about their perspective, and especially for their seniors, who were just commissioned as 2nd lieutenants and wear a different travel uniform than their underclassmen teammates now. Pretty cool stuff.

Very cool.
Stopped by Disch-Falk to pick up regional tickets, and Boston College was taking batting practice, and the Black Knights were over on the third base area where the concession stands normally are, stretching.
Baseball is in the air.
