Weekend jaunt - Advice Needed

I'm really needing a quick get-a-way for a weekend. I'm envisioning driving out on a Friday afternoon and driving back on a Sunday afternoon.

I'd prefer to drive 5 hours or less, and I am not sure my temper would allow me to deal with an airport right now, so where can I go in 5 hours or less from Austin that will allow me to be away, relax and unwind for a weekend?

My thoughts: I've never been to Corpus, but what the hell would I do once I got there? The boyfriend suggested Galveston, but once again, what do we do once we get there? I'd like to go to Louisiana, but he's not much of a gambler, so once again I'm not sure what the hell we would do once we crossed the state line.

I don't want to go to San Antonio, Dallas or Houston.

How is Big Bend this time of year?

given your 5 hr range limitation, i would say big bend and lousisana are right out.

fredricksburg is a great suggestion. lots of bed and breakfasts, some good restaraunts, nice relaxing hill country scenery.

might also suggest san antonio. for the coast, check out rockport or port a over corpus. great seafood, fishing, walking along the beach.

If you haven't burned yourself out on it, Gruene is a simple but good spot for a weekend. Wife and I did the bed and breakfast thing there last year about this time and it was a good time.

See if there's anyone fun playing at Gruene Hall and if they're doing their market days.

Port Aransas. Playing in the water is probably out because of the temperature, but you'll have the beach mostly to yourself. Some of the restaurants are closed for the season, but many are open. It's a great escape this time of year.
