I am so sorry this is out late. I don't know what the problem was - only LHG does to my knowledge. Anyways, I guess better late than never...Here's Week 2
Hot:
Oklahoma - Yeah, they gave up some points, but not as many meaningful points as you'd think. Their D really only allowed 13 points in that game. 7 points were on a kickoff return, and 6 were late in the game when it was out of reach. And near 600 yards on total offense - wow. And that's against a GOOD team.
Penn State - Were they the most impressive team of the day? Maybe. Certainly right up there - that was a 45-7 game against a Pac-10 team (albeit a bad one) by the fourth quarter. 200+ yards rushing and passing for the Lions - I think that team is a contender for the Big 11 crown.
BYU - I said last week that the MWC's top 3 (BYU, TCU, Utah) are going to be tough, tough tough, and this is just BYU going on the road in a hostile venue against a Pac-10 team (albeit not a good one) and pulling out the win. Could BYU meet Utah with both teams unbeaten? Maybe.
Ole Miss - Yeah, they lost a heartbreaker at the end when Swank's kick went through, but I'm gonna say that's a much improved team. In fact, they have a realistic shot at 4th in the SECW (Miss State and Arkansas fight it out for the cellar). Jevan Snead performed HUGE in this game.
East Carolina - I wondered aloud after they beat VT whether they would get back up to play West Virginia within the span of a week. Not only were they ready to play, they ran a top 10 team off the field. Big performance from Patrick Pinckney (22 of 28 with a TD), and WVU's offense got nothing done (more on that later).
South Florida - By FAR the best game of an otherwise uninspiring Saturday. Say what you will about some of you missing some of the UT game, but this game was a great one. UCF was outmatched all night long, but just kept fighting and fighting and fighting, and finally got the game tied and sent it to OT. But give credit where it's due - USF was the better team today and showed the look of a top-10 caliber team. Yes, they're the team to beat in the Big East. They'll beat West Virginia - again.
Arizona - You know, I think Lil' Stoops might be able to keep his job in Tucson after all. Another great offensive night for them. Willie Tuitama - 26 of 34, 294, 2 TDs, plus a 100 yarder from Nic Grigsby. I think Zona can win 7 if they beat New Mexico next week - that's the swing game. They can beat Oregon State, Washington, Washington State and Stanford in the Pac-10 so I think a 7-5 record might save Mike's job.
Rice - Yes, I'm giving Rice FOOTBALL props here. I laughed a statement somewhere that Rice might make a bowl game. I'm not laughing any longer. They slammed SMU with 56 in June Jones' opener, and now 29 points in the fourth quarter to beat a decent Memphis squad on the road. All of a sudden, Rice and Vandy next week is between a couple of 2 - 0 teams. Stop the presses already!
Colt McCoy - Understand this, guys. UT's team, other than Colt, looked pretty average. They didn't hit triple digits in rushing till late, their defense was bend-but-don't-break all night. But Colt is off to a SIZZLING start. Guy is 44 of 59 with seven touchdowns and 1 INT, and already 500+ yards passing. He'll keep Texas in a lot of games this year. Quan Cosby gets honorable mention on this list - he was lethal tonight.
Tulsa - I guess they don't care whether Paul Smith is gone or not, do they? Talk about starting strong to open the year - by dropping 45 on UAB and 56 on an admittedly bad UNT squad.
And then there is - the not:
Ohio State - Bottom line is this about the Buckeyes, guys and gals. They will not beat SC in L.A. without Beanie. I felt that way when he went down in the Youngstown game, and after their performance against Ohio I'm even more convinced of it. Without Beanie Wells, that's just another team that may even have trouble winning the Big 11 considering the way Penn State's come out of the gate.
Michigan - 16 - 6, in the Big House, against Miami. And it's not the Florida kind. I felt after the Utah game that they were in some trouble, and this game confirms my suspicions. They will be lucky to win seven games this year.
Syracuse - The Greg Robinson death march continues. First Northwestern, now Akron. It's only a matter of time before Cuse bids happy trails to Greg Robinson.
Virginia Tech - Talk about underwhelming. Holy crap, they played Glennon AGAIN this week? Only up 3 - 0 at halftime v. Furman. Yes, Furman. What is Beamer waiting for? For their sakes, Glennon needs to have his *** benched.
Notre Dame - Picking up right where they left off last year - they trailed for much of the game against that powerhouse called San Diego State and were lucky to pull out the win, That CANNOT happen if you are Notre Dame.
Washington - What a shame - to lose on an extra point? That seems to be pretty much how the Ty Willingham regime has gone in Seattle.
West Virginia - All the credit in the WORLD to East Carolina for their performance. That said, how does an offense with Pat White and Noel Devine manage just THREE points in a game of that magnitude?
South Carolina - Unbelievable. Vandy did it again. The further and further away from Danny Wuerffel the OBC gets, the more pedestrian he looks. Now he's losing to Vandy two years in a row.
Texas Tech - Yep, still underwhelmed. They're still giving up lots of yardage, and Nevada put up nearly 500 against that defense. Luckily for them, Nevada couldn't capitalize on all those red-zone opportunities, and Tech got those two big plays from Eric Morris and Crabtree. Bet they'll take the win, but I'm unimpressed.
Within the Big 12:
Hot:
Oklahoma State - You might think putting up nearly 600 is impressive, even with the talent OU has. But take a look at what OSU did to Cougar High in their game. Over 700 YARDS. That's right, 700. 300+ passing and rushing for "I'm a man and 40!" and his offense. I don't care whether they have a defense - and they don't - putting up 700 on ANYONE is impressive.
Texas A&M - You know, I pretty bluntly said here last week that A&M cannot lose to Arkansas State, ever. But I'm gonna give them credit for their win in ABQ. Gutty performance by the Ags to get up off the mat and come away with a nice road win.
Not:
Nebraska - not sugarcoating this one at all, it was a crappy performance. 35-12 you might say, but it was 14-12 in the 4th quarter. We'd stopped them by that point but it was still scary. Thank God for 2 turnovers converted to 14 points and very good special teams. Other than that there was no redeeming quality from this one. We cannot run block if a gun was held to our head, our tackling was horrible in the first half (but much better in the second half) and one of our defensive linemen suffered a serious injury during the game. But if you thought our performance was bad...
Colorado - Holy crap, they trailed Eastern Washington? For pretty much the entire game? I don't care that they won, that's bad. Needed 14 points in the last 2 minutes to win that one - that reeks of an average (at best) football team. Maybe they'll pull an upset on someone later but I wouldn't look for much else than that.
