Thursday, Aug. 28, 7:00 PM - (23) Wake Forest at Baylor

What I want to happen:

It sure would be nice if Baylor could pull the upset. A win for Baylor would be great for them. It would strengthen the conference image even more. It would improve our SOS.

What I think will happen:

Wake Forest is a solid team, but I would not exactly call them world-beaters. This is an opening season Thursday night game in Waco, and Briles will be looking to make a statement as he starts his career with the Bears. I think Baylor will keep it close for a half or maybe even three quarters. However, this is still Baylor, and Briles will need more than one off-season to get things turned around (if that is even possible). Wake Forest pulls away at the end and wins by two scores.

Saturday, Aug. 30, 2:30 PM - (3) USC at Virginia - ABC

What I want to happen:

The Trojans’ season gets ruined before they even play Ohio State.

What I think will happen:

USC starts the season on the road against a team that was pretty good a year ago (though they now have considerably less talent). Sanchez is coming off the knee injury, and it is an unknown how it will react in a game situation. Also, USC does have some question marks going into the season. Who am I kidding? This is still USC, and they are playing Virginia. I don’t think it will be a huge blowout for the reasons I just mentioned, but USC has too much talent. Trojans win by 2 TD’s or so.

Saturday, Aug. 30, 11:30 AM - Hawaii at (5) Florida - ESPN Game Plan

What I want to happen:

Beat down.

What I think will happen:

Beat down. Sugar Bowl Part II.

Saturday, Aug. 30, 7:30 PM - (20) Illinois vs. (6) Missouri (in St. Louis) - ESPN

What I want to happen:

Illinois gets the win and shakes the confidence of Missouri to start off the season.

What I think will happen:

Illinois has a big task in replacing Mendenhall. Missouri has lots of senior leadership. As much as I want to see Missouri lose, I don’t think it will happen. Tigers win by at least two scores.

Saturday, Aug. 30, 4:00 PM - Appalachian State at (7) LSU - ESPN

What I want to happen:

App State pulls the upset of the season again.

What I think will happen:

App State has shown they can pull giant upsets on the road. However, they now do not have the element of surprise. LSU might be suffering from a post-MNC hangover. The Tigers have serious issues at QB (or at least it would seem so). And anything can happen with a Les Miles team. That being said, LSU has too much talent. The Tigers will win, but the game will be closer than it should be for longer than it should be.

Saturday, Aug. 30, 7:00 PM - (24) Alabama vs. (9) Clemson (in Atlanta) - ABC

What I want to happen:

Roll Tide.

What I think will happen:

Ok. Here goes. Opening season game. Neutral site. Alabama does have talent (though it is young). However, when the pressure is on, Clemson always seems to choke. The Clemson hype machine has been in full force for several months now. The players know what the expectations are this season. Also, it is Nick Saban vs. Tommy Bowden. I have to give the coaching edge to Saban. Here is my upset pick. Alabama takes down Clemson to kickoff a wild 2008 season.

Monday, Sept. 1, 7:00 PM - (18) Tennessee at UCLA - ABC

What I want to happen:

Fat Phil and Slick Rick get into a fight at midfield and provide epic entertainment that will be talked about forever.

What I think will happen:

Does UCLA even have a scholarship QB that can walk now? The Vols win an ugly game.

Thoughts?

Would love to see the fight between Rick and Phil. I think Phil's size makes him slow, I will take Rick in a knockout. Now if Phil decides to sit on Rick, that's a different matter.

Slick Rick is a sleazeball and Phil is fat, but I've never heard of any coach calling the toughness of their players into question.

Did Texas/FAU not make your list because you think it will be a blowout?

I only have one Week 1 game of interest!

Appilachan State is really talented and well coached. You don't win three National Championships in a row without that, but playing an SEC team is on a whole different level than playing a Big 10 team. Yes they beat Michigan which is a legandary program, but LSU is far faster and far more talented than Michigan because they have to be to compete in the SEC. I would love to see Appy win again too but I can see LSU pulling away in the 3rd and never looking back. Hope I'm wrong about that and yes I didn't give Appy a chance last year either, but like I say the SEC is on a whole different level than the Big 10 (which in my mind is a toss up with the Big East for the worst BCS Conference. It's Ohio State and everyone else.)
