weeds in the yard

i moved into this house March 07. the yard was pretty poorly taken care of and i pulled a ton of weeds. somehow, they keep coming up. wtf is going on? what's the best way to prevent and maintain a weedless yard? i have st. augustine and it's crab grass that i'm really having the problem with.

thanks in advance for any info

St. Augie would choke out all weeds if thick and healthy, and maintained properly (mow high, water less).

A product high in nitrogen like dillo dirt will also stimulate growth. This time of year, just try to keep it alive. As the previous poster said, mowing with your blade at a high setting (about 3") will help maintain a healthy St. Augustine yard. If you're getting weeds, chances are the blade on the mower is set too low. A tall and thick lawn will choke out weeds.

I have heard great things about this product and it is organic. Additionally, you should lay down an application of corn gluten in the fall and spring; it does not kill existing weeds, but will prevent seeds from germinating. Do not use Weed & Feed.

Start using pre-emergent week killer. You put it down mid-Sept and mid-Feb every year. They work over time to keep weeds from germinating.

my problem is that will all the undeveloped lots all around, i THINK weed spores/pollen or whatever blow all over my yard.

thanks for the info. where can i get CGM in Austin?

weird, but my dog is allergic to this when it's in dog food. anyone know if it'd be something i should be concerned about? guess i'll call the vet.

Where do you live? Most of the major nurseries carry corn gluten. I don't know about the dog question, but I thought most foods contained wheat gluten and corn meal.

it's crab grass.

corn gluten meal is in probably 90% of dog food. i picked my dog up on the street when he was about 3 months old. mange, fleas, ticks, was basically bald. he's got a weak immune system so certain things make a difference. more dogs are allergic to corn gluten meal than you'd think. it could be as light as shedding.

Glad to hear you took this dog in; that is great. I would then check with your vet. I doubt he would digest this as it comes in a powder form and would have no binding protein agent to make him want to eat it; but dog's health > preventing weeds.

Jellydonuts - thanks for all the info. i live in central austin. i'm going to run by some places this weekend and see what they have.

Does corn gluten work in a dry climate as well?

I live in El Paso and have bermuda. I used to have a problem with dandelion and crabgrass but with meticulous weeding i took care of most of those.
I havent really used anything specific for weeds (dont know what to use) other than weed-n-feed in the past, which didnt work for ****.
But now i have some sort of weed that looks like a small fern/parsley that has taken over a quarter of my backyard. There are tons of those little plants and it blends in well with the thick grass so i cant possibly get to pulling all of it.

Keep the mower set as high as you can, and weed after every big watering/rain. The taller grass makes the St. Augustine survive the heat better and chokes out the other weeds much better.

"I think CGM is not to be used with St. Augustine grass. "

No, it works fine with St. Augustine. The only time not to use it is in conjunction with new seed plantings (it will prevent them from germinating). St. Augustine is planted from sod.

Best way to fight the weeds is to keep the St. Augustine happy and healthy. Mow it long (mower all the way up works well), water it enough to keep it from staying flat after you walk on it.

Also helps to break out the mower and mow the weeds in spring/fall while the grass is dormant. If you can prevent the weeds from reseeding you will cut down on the number that come back the following year.
