Wedding locations in Austin?

My fiance and I are living in California but are planning to get married in Austin since both of our families are in Texas. The problem is that since I'm a poor graduate student, we really can't afford to fly down and visit some of the places to see what they look like, and we've only been to one that we like (The Barr Mansion).

I've googled a few places and found some that look good, but I was wondering if anyone here could offer some info/opinions on places they've been to in person. We'd like to keep the cost of the place, food, and drink around $5,000, and we are inviting ~100 people. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Barr mansion is nice, been in a wedding there. If I can offer one piece of advice, do not deal with the people at the Heep Homestead. I have known several people that have been screwed by the lady that runs the place. I heard that she gets your business and money and then never plans on actually having the wedding there.

I got married outside at a friends ranch for free. Maybe look into something like that.

We got married at Barr Mansion and loved it. The people were great to work with. We got married on 10/17/98, and it rained 11 inches that day. The staff was great with getting everything taken care of, even with that much rain.

If you're doing it on the cheap ($50 a head for place, food, drink is cheap --- believe it or not) -- then I recommend the Salt Lick Pavillion.

Heep Homestead is run by a documented psycho, and Barr Mansion is PRICEY -- and both are well out of your price range.

Oh, and you also need to think of some other costs -- photographer, flowers, minister, etc. (photog can EASILY cost a couple of grand, flowers ain't cheap).

My wife is a wedding coordinator (and a minister) -- I know pretty much all the places in town, and if you're looking for an all-in-one place that's affordable, and where it won't be cheesy and your guests can have fun, the Salt Lick Pavillion is your best bet.

If you settle on a date and need a minister, drop me a PM.

I agree with orngbld on Salt Lick. I've been to a few weddings out there, and they were all cool. Price sounds right as well.

Don't anything about price, but Green Pastures seems pretty nice. I used to live behind them, and they have peacocks and ****.

Barr Mansion is great especially at night and with the reception area all light up.
They are very reasonable on the facility, seating, BYOB and reception. You can spend way too much on food.

Good luck!

We got married at the Merrell Plantation (near Dell Diamond), and it was great. Other than being in Williamson County, that is.

My fiancee and I are getting married at the Villa Antonia, out in the Hill Country. Beautiful place, real friendly owner.
However, in order to stay in your price range, you may need to get married on a Friday or Sunday.

My brother and his fiance are actually getting married at The Trois Estate in March. It seems like a really cool place from the pics I've seen.

We still have yet to decide, but we'll be looking at all of the places you guys mentioned. Much thanks for all the help!

Beware the Troise estate. If it rains, it leaks AND floods. Lovely.

I'm serious -- my wife has coordinated a wedding at EVERY SINGLE LOCATION MENTIONED ON THIS THREAD, and if she were to get married again, she says, without hesitation, that she would do it at the Salt Lick Pavilion (at least the reception would be there, if we did the ceremony at church). That should tell you something.

another thing about Trois Estate....

the flooring inside is a cobblestone type concoction. When my wife and I were looking at places we thought this place was nice, however it's ******* difficult to walk inside of it. Not so much a problem for the guys, but ladies in heels may be in for a surprise. I know, weird observation, but a practical one.

We got married at Vintage Villas overlooking Lake Travis. I can't remember what we paid, but I know it was over $5K. Still may be do-able within your budget, however. The wedding and reception take place on the same grounds, but in different locations. This is the view of the gazebo where the couple stands:

Vintage Villas is great. When we were there 4 years ago they offered a package for Sunday weddings that was considerably cheaper than Friday or Saturday.
