Wedding Bands

So the date is getting closer and closer, and coming to the time to get the wedding bands.

Have pretty much decided on a basic, traditional platinum band. Mine is going to be a 6mm and the wife's is going to be 3mm. Slightly rounded on top, and comfort fit. probably looking around 16 to 17 grams (~.75 ounces) for me and 10 to 12 grams (~.5 ounces) for the girl. Looking at the current price (~1450-1500 per ounce (I'm assuming its ounces)), that would come anywhere from 750-1100 for each ring just for the metal.

Any idea what type of mark-up I should be expecting from the jeweller? Or at least what type of mark-up I should go in with a first offer?

Thanks.

Wedding bands can get lost way too easily, so we both spent < $500 for ours. That said, your "replacement" threshold might be higher. Just my $0.02. Blue Nile might be a good place to start.

exactly what horn_blooded set. I have a tungsten carbide band and it was $60. I bought an extra in case I lose it. The only thing that the jeweler told me is that you need to be really careful when wearing it as there is no machine that is able to cut it...so if you hurt your finger and it swells, it likely won't end well. I didn't see the point in paying $500+ on a band that is just plain metal.

James Avery comfort fit sterling silver for less than 60$. Been wearing it for about 4 years.

$700+ seems a lot to pay for some a metal band on your finger. It's not a fine China set. Don't they have aluminum or steel bands polished to look like any of the exotic metals mentioned above?

Like the above poster said, James Avery. If you are set on platinum, get a silver, no one will know the difference but you. I lost my gold one a couple years ago, bout a JA for 35$ and think it looks great.

just as an FYI to those supporting tungsten carbide... that's what I have, and the other day I was playing with it and I dropped it on the ground (cement) and it BROKE IN HALF. I am pretty furious, especially since it was advertised to me as basically indestructible.

Exactly what Zork said. I am not a big fan of jewelry so I went for the simplest at James Avery. If you do man type stuff, you will either lose your ring or need it cut off at some point. I am on my 2nd band. Spending $$ on a man's wedding ring is silly.

Women's rings on the other hand...

I wish I had read this thread 4.5 years ago.

I bought a $600-700 gold ring from Benolds. Very nice. I have almost lost it many many times. After my last time, I put it in our safe. I am more worried about it out of sentiments but it is also my most expensive piece of jewelry (I don't wear much).

I then bought a silver wedding ring from James Avery. $45. I love it. It is Comfort Fit too (so is my real one).

I wish I had just bought 2 of these in the first place. Put the real one in the safe and wear the 2nd one all the time. Would have saved a bunch of cash.......
