Texas will face off with Northwestern State this Wednesday morning in the fifth annual 40 Acres Field Trip game. The game will be at 11 AM to allow about 5,000 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th graders to see the game as part of an educational trip to the UT campus. This will be the third game between the two schools with Texas holding a 2-0 record. All games have been in Austin. Texas is 1-0 while NWS comes in at 1-1 after suffering their first loss to SMU Sunday.
This Louisiana school has six players from Texas. The Lady Demons return their top two scorers from 2014-15 but lost their top three rebounders. They return two of four starters and another player who started 22 of 34 games. In addition to those three, five other players that saw action last season return. Janelle Perez (# 13, 5-2 Sr. G) with an average of 15.1 ppg was the leading scorer last season for the Lady Demons. Keisha Lee (# 3, 5-5 Sr. G) was second at 10.2 ppg.
In the first two games, NWS has used the same starting lineups. These players that have started both games are Beatrice Attura (# 30, 5-7 Jr. G), Emerald Mayfield (# 00, 5-11 Fr. F), Janelle Perez, Shahd Abboud (# 12, 5-11 Jr. G) and Tia Youngblood (# 44, 5-10 Soph. F). Attura (17.0 ppg) and Mayfield (10.0 ppg) are the leading scorers this season. Cheyenne Brown (# 32, 6-2 Fr. P) and Sami Thomas (# 5, 5-5 Soph. G) are the top scorers off the bench at 6.5 and 6.0 ppg, respectively. Brown’s 66.7% (6-9) from the field tops the team in FG%. Mayfield’s 42.1% (8-19) is second best. Attura is the top shot taker, averaging 16 shots a game (10-32, 31.3%). The Lady Demons are starting off really poorly from the BTA, hitting 1-18 (0.056%). Abboud (1-6, 16.7%) is the only one to make a three pointer. Attura, Thomas Janelle Perez and Jackie Perez have also attempted 3s. Attura (14-20, 70.0%) and Youngblood (4-12, 33.3%) are the ones that have gotten to the FT line the most.
NWS have three strong rebounders: Youngblood (8.5 rpg), Abboud (7.5 rpg) and Mayfield (6.0 rpg). Abboud (3.0 apg), Janelle Perez (2.5 apg) and Thomas (2.0 apg) have 15 of the team’s total 18 assists. Abboud (5 steals) and Janelle Perez (3 steals) top their squad in steals. Brown has two of the team’s three blocks.
The Lady Demons have been without Keisha Lee the first two games. Eleven of 14 players have played in the first two games. Not playing along with Lee have been Brynae Thompson (# 15, 5-8 Fr. G) and Libba Gilliam (# 22, 6-1 Fr. F). The five starters: Attura, Mayfield, Janelle Perez, Abboud and Youngblood all average over 20 mpg. Attura (32.0 mpg) and Thomas (31.0 mpg) spend the most time on the court. Brown, with an average of 17 mpg, is the seventh Lady Demon to average double digit minutes.
Texas had six players hit double figures in their season opener, led by Brooke’s 22 and Kelsey’s 12.Imani, Empress, Celina and LaShann ended up with 11 pts each. Sara hit both her shots to end up with a FG% of 100. Brooke (8-13, 61.5%) and Kelsey (5-8, 62.5%) are the other two hitting over 60% of their shots. Brooke (4-6, 66.7%) and Celina (3-7, 42.9%) put on a show from BTA as Texas ended up hitting 9 of 24 threes (37.5%). Horns had four players hit 100% of their FTS, led by Empress’ 6-6 and Brady’s 4-4. Both Brooke and Kelsey hit 2-2 FTs. Still, this is one area where there is room for a lot of improvement as the team ended up at 65.7% from the FT line.
Imani’s team leading ten rebounds gave her a double double to start the season. Jordan was second with 8 rebounds in 13 minutes. Brooke nabbed 7 rebounds while Kelsey added 6. That helped to give the Horns a 22 rebound advantage. Empress (6) and Brooke (4) combined for 10 of the team’s 13 assists. Kelsey and Imani had 3 blocks each while Sara added one as Texas swatted away 7 shots. Six players had at least one steal with LaShann (4) and Brooke (3) leading the way.
All 12 players that were available played. Diani and Ariel sat out the game as they recover from injuries. Starters for the first game were Imani, Brooke, Celina, Empress and Kelsey. All five starters played at least 23 minutes with Brooke’s 28 topping the squad. Empress was second with 26 minutes. Olamide and Brady, both coming back from injuries, were the only ones to play single digit minutes.
Projected starting lineup based on the last game played:
Texas....................Northwestern State
Imani(6-7)..............Attura (5-7)
Kelsey (6-5)............Mayfield (5-11)
Empress (5-9).........Perez, Janelle (5-2)
Brooke (5-4)...........Abboud (5-11)
Celina (5-8)............Youngblood (5-10)
Texas will once again have a big height advantage inside as the Lady Demons’ tallest player is 6-2 frosh Brown. Look for Brown to get a lot of playing time due to her height. Brooke will actually be the bigger PG on the court in this game as she goes against the 5-2 Senior Janelle Perez. Texas, as in the first game, will try to take advantage of their inside height advantage. But our guards and wings were quick to pull the trigger when UTSA packed it inside. No doubt they will do the same in this game if NWS tries to do the same although it may be a matter of picking their poison.
