'We played a near perfect opener'

- Mack's words in an espn article. Not sure how to judge this game. Poor tackling and long pass completions in the first half but improvement in the second half. Is that what the expectations were that make this a perfect game? I can accept that to a degree. I hope he qualifies that statement with the team, though, because there is a lot of work to be done and practice is the time to do it!

52 - 10. I'll take it! Great work guys!

Maybe to him the yardage they racked up in the first half wasn't as big of a deal since it didn't end with many points. I mean the defense that gave up the yardage is the same defense that forced the turnovers that ended those long drives.

And he did say "near" ...

I think the key is that it was an "opener." I think you had to know your young DBs were going to make mistakes, but I think all of us would have taken a 10-point outing coming in. And clearly there was improvement in the second half, so I'm cautiously optimistic. They just need to keep improving.

Teams like Tech and FAU (with Tech being more lethal) are going to get their yards. Some more gawdy weeks statistic wise than others, they are going to get their yards more than not. The key is to not let those yards convert to points and have to be in a track meet with them.

This was a great tune up giving the coaches, spec. Akina, good game tap to focus on things and tweak here and there to get things better. I foresee some tackling and wrap up drills among other things for the secondary. But there were times they freaking brought the wood.

They definitely brought the wood and stopped the running game. For a bunch of freshmen they did pretty good. But, I don't think I'd want to tell my team they played near perfectly in the first game. It wasn't perfect; It was FAU.

Their kickoff coverage team gave up 3 consecutive kickoffs that around the 40 yd. line. That needs lots of work.

Hook'em!!!

It could have been a different interview but what I heard is he said a near perfect 2nd half not game.

Just saw the game replay. It was Mack's interview with ABrooks where he said they played a near perfect half.

Like I said ESPN may have reported a different interview.

I don't think you've got to worry about the team taking it the wrong way. Listening to the post game interviews of Hall, Ulatoski, McCoy, and Irby, every one of them said they've got a lot of work to do to keep improving.

I'd give Mack the benefit of the doubt with that statement. The opener was very encouraging. I mean, crap...when's the last time the defense adjusted that quickly and thoroughly?! Not only did the wheels not fall off (see aTm) but we completely dominated most of that game, in stark contrast to last year's opener.

did the D adjust and play better or did their O just suck the second half?

There O was just worn out the second half.. We kept pounding fresh bodies at them...

We did make some good adjustments at half. One set of stats made me very happy, zero turnovers. No ints and no fumbles. That's no fumbles at all. Add to that zero sacks given up.

We didn't get any sacks ourselves, but there was good pressure at times. I am suprised we did not blitz a little more. We did get nine TFLs.

Yeah, I'm going to have to say that our best opener was the 65-0 shellacking of UNT in 2004 where Benson scored a 30ish yard TD on our first offensive play.

1. offense put up 52 pts. 7 diff players with td's. 0 turnovers

CHECK

2. Defense bent but did not break early. Made the necessary adjustments in 2nd half. Only gave up 10 pts.

CHECK

3. Special Teams- Made all our fg's and xp's. Made a fake field-goal. Had a blocked punt!!

I think that looking at it from that view... that we dominated every aspect of the game... makes this a 'near perfect' performance. No one aspect of our game was lacking.
