we need quality receivers

we've had a lot of highly touted guys not pan out of late

we need one that can, you know, catch the ball and not give it to the other team preferably

I know that's asking for a lot

And we need good O-lineman. And a couple of good defensive lineman while we are at it. Our highly touted defensive ends have been really quiet this year. I thought DE was going to be the strength of the defense this year.

We can always use more. But, I think the jury is still out on the ones we have on campus until we have a clear #1 at QB and everyone is on the same page with Harsin's offense. But Cayleb Jones and Thomas Johnson out of Dallas Skyline seem like the real deal.

jordan/jaxon shipley seemed to/are panning out? limas sweed/quan cosby were solid. malcolm williams/mike davis show flashes. before that, roy williams/bj williams/sloan thomas/tony jeffreys were good to great.

Yes there are those that didn't pan out, but i think our WR recruiting is one area where we have gotten some quality players. like a previous poster said, it really depends on the QB play...which depends on the OL play...

WR is the last place we need to waste scholarships right now, because we have 5 of them who bide their time on the pine already. It would have been more if Fitzhenry and Timmons were still here. The sad part is, those same 5 will still be on the bench next season with Jones and Thomas getting playing time.

We could have used those 5 ships on a bunch of 2-star offensive linemen and gotten some depth out of this gig.

in the 2008 tech game, malcolm williams had two long TD receptions. shipley took over his punt return duties and had a punt return TD. they made up for quan's absence in the stat category. if anything, we missed quan's leadership and calming influence (maybe?) in the huddle. colt's pick six was awful.

however, the loss of orakpo due to injury, the defensive lapses on the last to plays of the game (gideon's int drop, and the blown coverage/tackle on crabtree), and the lack of proper clock management on our last TD drive were IMO more detrimental to our cause that day.

unfortunately, some days are just not going to work out like we want them to. that day had so many things going against us, it's hard to say it's just because quan got hurt or collins dropped a pass. nobody will disagree that quality WR depth is important, but the same can be said at every position (QB, OL, DL, LB, etc).

Malcolm Williams is at the top of my list or WR that did not pan out. Saw him play quite a few times in HS and really thought he was going to be a stud.

We need strong tall/big receivers like Blackmon from OSU. As much as I like Davis, he was thrown around like a rag doll after the catch against OSU, and of course he coughed up a fumble after making the catch.

Onyegbule fits the mold of a receiver who can gain yards after the catch with his size. We need him to mature quickly.

I think that we should only sign those players who are going to be drafted in the first round when they leave UT. This seems so obvious, I can't understand why our coaching staff has not figured it out yet.

I cant figure out why the coaching staff cant maximize the talent they already have. Everybody brings something to the table.

Correction. OU has 3 weapons that outclass everything we have right now.
Reynolds (a Houston kid

) made 2 circus one handers I saw yesterday.

I read on BarkingCarnival that Reynolds was a HS team mate of Timmons. Was not even in the top 100 his year.

Seems to me that on average we out recruit Oklahoma in Feb. and then they out coach/ out develop their player/men the rest of the year. Aside from Colt (which is a big one), when ave our coaches really developed a three star recruit?

Let's not forget Cochran. I don't remember anyone wanting him. Most of us were baffled at the offer. He's our starting left tackle as a true freshman.

We have had more busts at the WR position than just about any. Williams had so much talent that never materizlied. Buckner showed flashes of great play on the field but transferred due to conflicts with coaches.

Texas only took 1 WR in 09 in Timmons. And where is he?

Texas 2 took WR in 08 in Buckner and HIcks. Both were gone before 2010 season.

So it isn't that our current crop is bad. It is just that we don't have experienced upperclassmen. There is talent on the team and we have already seen really good play from Shipley and Davis.

I am still hopefuly that Wyatt will develop White, Jones, and Harris.

Onyegbule has practiced well and I am hoping for things from him as well. Especially considering he was the only WR taken last year.

Does anyone know if it is true that WR Chris Jones is transfering? If so, boy do we ever need at least 2 more top WR's who can play next year to go with the 2 we have already commited just from a numbers and quality aspect.

Yes, he's gone... per Statesman today.

That leaves 3 benchwarmers plus Jones/Johnson coming in. It wouldn't surprise me if Overstreet got a look there as well.

You also have to consider that pulling in both Jones and Johnson is the 2012 equivalent of getting Roy & BJ in 2000. We don't usually cherry pick from the top, but that's exactly what we got... guys who will contribute immediately. And often.

That leaves us with:
X: Davis, Hales, Jackson
Z: Goodwin, White
H: Shipley, Onyegbule

Fall pratice bench: Harris, Jones, Johnson

So we're at least 3 deep at each position, and can easily find 5 if we needed to do some of the sets that were working for us back in 2009. It's shocking how young we are at such an important position.

I think if we experiment with Overstreet there, there's honestly no reason to pull another guy from the current HS seniors to force more competition. There will be plenty in August.

I intend no slight towards Jaxon Shipley.
He is a solidly contributing freshman.
I trust he will in time become a playmaker like his brother if we get or develop (or choose to play) a quarterback that can deliver balls on target to him consistently.

It's just that we need more.
