We flipped one from U.Tennessee?

It looks like we have flipped the Tennessee commit, ILB Cecil Cherry (Victory Christian, Lakeland FL). 247 has him as a 4-star and most services have him as a 4-star or high 3-star. A national top-350 type commit.

He visited us last week. The funny thing is that he hasn't officially decommitted yet, but you won;t see a more committed uncommitted recruit anywhere, if you see his twitter - Cherry Twitter

He has been re-tweeting everything for the last day, and keeps putting in "hookem" while the Tennessee fans keep pouring insults on him. Hilarious stuff. And he says "wait till Feb 5th". Not sure why he can't say he has decommitted, but I suspect we asked him to keep it quiet and he couldn't

Anyway, 247's crystal ball predictions for Cherry (by multiple service's recruit gurus) has been funny too. 11 of the 12 recruiting gurus flipped their predictions within 20 hours since yesterday and another had flipped him from Tennessee to Texas 4 days ago. So everybody thinks he is ours. Some Tennessee players have said he has decommitted too.

Meanwhile one of our coaches is rumored to be on his way to Indianapolis today to get a slightly-higher rated 4-star ILB Darren Kirkland whom we are trying to flip from Michigan to Texas. I believe he is getting his under armor All-american jersey or something in a function today. Kirkland is set to do an OV with us on Dec 6th.

There are all kinds of rumors that our staff has a lot of guys ready to commit but are asking them to take their time and wait, as they work on others. As we have 30 spots to give, we are not as crunched for spots like other programs. Some sites reported about a national top-100 RB to be in the picture and very serious, and some of those reports were taken down last week (not clear who got them to do that!). There are other top RBs we are after too, which could explain it. It seems like our staff is on to all kinds of things but keeping a lot of people off-balance too.

Recruiting getting interesting....

30 to give? 25 allowed? Hope we have a few gray shirts.... Or are we already thinking some we have committed are not gonna qualify

Jayakris,

You are so right. Recruiting is getting VERY interesting. I anticipate a fever pitch of excitement come late January.

Not sure why, but I kind of get the idea he's playing us on Twitter.
Also, that's a sweet looking Horns helmet. That's change I can live with.

kbrown,

with the many players that have been injured, decided to stop playing, left or were removed from the program, there are scholarships open from the previous year(s). add the exiting seniors and maybe an NFL early exit. you can easily get more than 25 for this class. 25 is the limit for "NEW" scholarships in each class with a max of 85 at the start of a new season. I have no idea if Strong utilizes the "grayshirt" strategy.

I think the athletic department has access to one of the NSA spy computers to help keep track of the recruiting numbers.

I think we have a choice on early enrollees to count them against last year's class instead of 2015. I don't know how many slots we left empty, but with the post-Brown defections, surely there were a couple.

Yes, I have heard of at least one grey-shirt offer out there, and there are a few early enrollees too. It's confusing, so I never try to go into details, but every recruiting site is saying that we can easily go up to 30 (maybe even 31) without hitting the 85 limit, which makes sense because of all the attrition this year and with Malcom Brown almost sure to leave after the junior year.

Wasn't it Tennessee that signed 33 this January? I believe it's possible.

Anyway, it is actually helping us a lot, seeing some top new names coming into the picture this late. Many schools are down to 5 or 6 spots left, but we are still able to freely go after some guys who are having second-thoughts in other places and get them to visit. Except for one or two linemen types that the staff has evaluated higher, I think most of the guys we are after are in the 4-star national top-350 range and many in the top-200 range. Getting a top-10 class does not seem to be much a of a problem at this point. The recent 4-1 record is not hurting either.

I am not sure if you have to be an early enrollee to be counted against a prior year. I have given up trying to interpret the NCAA Manual. I have heard at least 3 solid commits of the 2015 class intend to enroll early. Sorry, i don't recall who they were.
