We Are What We Are

Sometimes you have to face reality and the
reality is we are a borderline top 25 team.

This team has no All American starting pitcher
or a second starter that was often a first team
All Conference pitcher.

The defense, especially the infield that is usually
excellent is at best average.

The hitting is inconsistent at best and at times
can just shut down completely. Many times
if we don't get walks and errors from the
opposition we just don't score.

Small ball is great as long as you execute and
then follow up with a hit or get help from your
opponent.

Today was particularly frustrating as we would get
a runner on then move him up, but then strand
him.

Then Weis doubles to start the 8th and we don't
bunt him up and Walsh strikes out. We strike
out way to much by the way. Of course Felts
follows with a fly ball that would have scored
Weis if he had been advanced to third.

If we take the lead there then maybe Knebel
comes out to start the 8th and the outcome is
different, of course we will never know.

The bottom line is we have lost too many games
to bad teams this year and we are paying for it
by having no chance to host a regional.

We have been propped up some because the
conference is probably the weakest it has been
in baseball this year since it's inception.

We are 2-3 players short of being a really good
team. We lost starting pitching, a great shortstop,
and a couple of good hitters from last year's team.
They were not replaced this season and the
results speak for themselves.

Can we still win a regional? Yes, it's still possible.
We need to get Stell back by then as he is
expected to be after his knee surgery.

French needs to be healthy, with no conference
series next week we should rest him and let him
heal completely if he needs that.

The best scenario would be for Rice to not only
host a regional, but receive a national seed also.
Then we need to be put in this regional as a #2
or even a #3 seed.

We are familiar with the field, no long travel,
and Rice is beatable. We would also have as
many or more fans there as Rice and be as
close to a home field advantage as you could
have except for Disch-Falk Field. You win it
and then take their national seed and then
we would host a Super Regional.

Other teams have gotten hot at the right time
like Oregon State did and you can even win it
all. That's basically what needs to happen for
us to have some post season success.

We have tried all kinds of line up changes and
pitching rotations, but Augie can't sprinkle magic
pixie dust on them and make them more talented.

All we can do is just get the players we have
healthy and ready for the post season. Have
Augie say whatever he can to inspire them to
play their best and have a good baseball IQ
in those games. If we can keep it close and get
games to our bull pen we always have a
good shot.

This is how I see it because "We Are What We Are"

We're weak up the middle. Today is the first time (in my decades following Texas) that CFer allowed ball over his head to score winning run from first in the opponent"s last AB! 2 outs and 2 strikes to the batter! Also in bottom 1, SS gets possible 6-4-3 grounder, and doesn't get an out. Both runners safe and both score on next hitter's double.
Very unusual for a Texas team to make these types of mistakes in May. Can y'all tell I'm frustrated?

Yep from me too.

We are probably a slight bit better than I thought after the first few games, but we are simply not a top-20 team. May be a top-35 or borderline top-25 team, and that's about it. Hope we will just catch fire at the right time somehow and manage to make it to Omaha. Tough to see it though.

Serious Longhorn baseball fan since the early 80s--seems to me that questionable coaching along with questionable recruiting are contributing factors to current situation!! Will be there thru the good and the bad but just a bit worried about direction of our program!

Who is going to out bid or out evaluate Texas for
a hosting bid? LSU comes to mind, but they are
going to be a national seed.

Our administrators have their faults, but being outbid for hosting events is not one of them.

We are 4-5 in the nation in average attendance.
A national seed regional is paired against a non
national seed regional.

I don't think any of those non national seeds can beat us out of hosting a Super.

Also for the umpteenth time Stafford was not
lost he would be with the Yankees if not being
hurt that is why they didn't offer the big bucks.
The Yankees don't draft a player that they don't plan
on signing, he was evaluated and they found
the injury.

That's an excellent synopsis, NBHorn7.

With a .268 overall team batting average and a .966 overall team fielding percentage, few such teams are going to be highly ranked (or win championships).

And in spite of a not-so-terrible team ERA of 3.22, I agree that we just don't have the excellence on the staff that championship Texas teams have had in the past. It reminds me of a couple of teams early in Augie's tenure at Texas that didn't have the talent to compete very well.

I count 14 players whose home towns are an hour or two drive from Austin. Maybe the recruiter for the team needs to expend a bit more effort traveling to places farther away in the state to watch kids play rather than signing so many kids who live close to Austin.

Thanks for posting video links throughout the season and for streaming games. In spite of the performance of the team, it's been great to have access to those.

I think it would take a minor miracle for this team to win a regional. We've seen much better Texas teams play at home and still not win a regional.

As with every year, I have my reservations in Omaha, but maybe the upside this year is that, unlike last year, we won't make the long trip to Omaha, watch the team go two and out, and then drive back to Texas . . . .

I do hope I get to make that trip to Omaha this year to watch Texas play there, but I think that's about a 5% probability.

It is beginning to appear that the complacency and neglect in the football program was shifted to baseball. Did Madden get his hands on baseball S&C?
