Watched The Counselor

..... What a self indulgent piece of crap that was. Everyone from the cartel bosses to the street level drug dealers was a philosopher....

All that was missing was Ted saying "All we are is dust in the wind, dude."

So you liked it?

Here's the review I posted:

Saw "The Counselor" starring Michael Fassbender, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem and Brad Pitt, directed by Ridley Scott from Cormac McCarthy's very first original, spec screenplay.

The Link

If you, as a lawyer, would just try to emulate Gregory Peck's Atticus Finch in "To Kill a Mockingbird," you'd not get into overly dangerous trouble like Michael Fassbender's nameless legal eagle from El Paso does in "The Counselor."

But simple greed, fast women, fast friends, fast cars and a love of money and high living drives the story here.

And a whole lot of dialog, admittedly with pertinent pithy points being made by many of those who pontificated, elaborated and illuminated.

There's a memorable scene where Diaz is spread-eagled across Bardem's windshield that got my prurient hopes up.

Not very much sex though, just lots of talk by Cruz, Diaz and Bardem, but there's a bunch of violence and finally a lot of regret that comes about in this flick

I liked it, but I don't think its for everyone, although there's plenty of good cinematography in interesting locations and decent acting from all the thespians listed above.

Because it's very, very talky and the often overly intelligent dialog seemed overwritten to me, but I guess Cormac McCarthy gets a pass on his very first screenplay.

Maybe he should have written a book first and then adapted it to the screen.

Heck, maybe he did.

I don't think "The Counselor" will do that well at the box office, since it covers many of the same plot points that recent movies and TV have covered so often.

I was reminded of McCarthy's "No Country for Old Men" and Ridley Scott's "Kingdom of Heaven" in both good and bad ways.

And "Savages," "The Falcon and the Snowman," "Pulp Fiction," "Breaking Bad," "Weeds," "The Bridge," "Traffic," "Blow" plus even "We're the Millers."

It was a pretty good drug smuggling flick with a big name cast, if you're in need of another one of those.

As I said, I liked it and I enjoyed the good movie making in it.

But you might want to wait on the rental.

Your thoughts?

Sorry.... Saw that after I had already put this up.... we clearly have different takes on the movie. In my opinion, the pontification that almost every single character participates in makes the movie ridiculously stupid.
