Washington Formally Announces It Is Changing Team Nickname and Logo

Name - makes sense. Redskins isn't like Braves, Chiefs, Indians, Warriors, etc. Those others are more like Trojans, Vikings, Aztecs, Seminoles, or Irish. Redskins would be more like having a team named the Yellow Peril or the Darkies.

But the logo? It's a dignified portrayal of a dark-skinned man. Why should it change? Logos are ok if they are light-skinned people (Patriots, Vikings, OSU Cowboys). From the same people who point out "representation matters", we have the reduction of representation. Makes no sense.

"But the logo? It's a dignified portrayal of a dark-skinned man. Why should it change?" Well, if the new name has nothing to do with a dignified, dark skinned man with a feathered headdress, then the logo probably should go, too. ;)

Sad, but with all the recent events, most probably thought this would happen.
I was NOT a fan of the extortion taking place in the retail tech side of the issue...and they should have simply told FedEx to pay the buy-out on the contract and they would find someone else. I have a feeling Goya would pay for a few years...they don't seem keen to bow to public pressure.

The whole nonsense of Amazon and Nike taking them off the online sites was just stupid though...nothing but pandering to the left.

Time to get rid of Fighting Irish. I am Irish and you are offending me. I stopped fighting years ago when I was booked for it in the Austin city jail. All of these negative inferences of the Irish (most of which I wear as a badge of pride) must stop now.

The Chiefs. Lol

Aren't footballs kind of red skinned? Keep the name and change the logo to a football.

Or make the logo George Hamilton.

When they are finished there will be no history, none, zero, nada, zilch, gone. Will there come a day where MLK is reputed due to moral character? Come on guys.

"When they are finished there will be no history, none, zero, nada, zilch, gone." Of course, there will be history. In this instance, the history books will say that the Washington team was known as the Redskins until 2020 when they changed the nickname to the [whatever]. History will also record why they changed the name, and it also will record that both the original name and the requirement to change it were vociferously opposed by different groups of people. No worries at all about history disappearing. The whole concept of history is that things change, so you record the changes. If things never changed, that's when there would be "no history, none, zero, nada, zilch, gone." ;)

Of course you are correct Stanhin, my hyperbole I suppose. I should have said “excepting the footnotes”.

It'll be the same as when the Bullets changed to the Wizards. Still the same piece-of-**** product. I've always felt that one was way less offensive than Redskins, but the NBA since David Stern took over and now Adam Silver has never been one to shy away from stuff like that.

Karen and the WaPost can go F themselves.

I don't agree with, but get, the Confederate statues and changing the name from Redskins. Agree or not, I am for a process over extortion or just plain vandalism.

However, at this point, some of the other stuff has just gotten stupid and silly. The Wa-Post, as biased as it is, should still resemble something at least sort of professional, yes? This sounds like something, some 15 year-old, wannabe, SJW would type on Twitter.

When the name "Texas Rangers" becomes sensitive we have just gone too far.

Agreed. But that's separate from whether or not Redskins should change. Again, how is Washington Redskins any better than Washington Yellows or Washington Darkies? The dumb thing is that they are changing it away from native representation altogether.

A Hispanic friend of mine (who leans a little left but is fairly moderate) put it this way:

The Washington logo was designed by a member of the Blackfoot tribe to represent a Blackfoot, and I read his son thinks removing the logo takes away from Native Americans. Trying to figure out what I would think I were Native American: If there was a team called, say the San Antonio Wetbacks with a logo that showed an Aztec, vaquero, or revolucionario in a positive way I'd be all about changing the name but cool keeping the iconography. Changing the logo would feel to me like they were taking something away. Rather than changing the name to for example San Antonio Bulldogs I would hope they kept the logo and changed the name to maybe San Antonio Vaqueros.

Oh, I was thinking college football. As in the Washington Huskies would now be the Washington Yorkies or Poodles or something...

Oh there will be history....just not an accurate version of it

Emotion trumps logic and reason again.
My last name is Rainwater.
I have a rich Indian lineage on both paternal and maternal side.
Intrinsic to mascots and logos is the intent to memorialize, honor, esteem, and to uphold as good and worthy of respect. This is self-evident.
One of the few places you see this with Indian history is with names of sports teams. It is one way those who have gone before and left a mark on history are remembered.
So, removing this is the respectful thing to do??

They were going after the Redskins for 20+ years. The same day they finally gave in to the madness, the Texas Rangers were immediately placed in the cross hairs. Why? Because Rangers are "racist law enforcement."

Guess who's going to be next? The racist white people that killed the Indians. They were called Cowboys. Then on to the next rube who gives in to their demands.

Giving in to extremists will never satisfy them.

Gosh! I thought giving in to extremists was the new UT way. We should endorse it.

Well, many of those cowboys were black or hispanic. I believe it was actually one of the more common professions a freedman could acceptably enter in the mid-late 1800s.

Rain, expect representatives from BLM and the National Demoractic Party (I know the same group) to pitch up on your porch with the intent to correct your stance.
