Washing walls in house

I have white painted walls in my place and certain areas are dirty, with blackish spots, like behind the couch, etc. What is the best way to clean the walls? Will soap and hot water work with a sponge?

Test the area, D-back. Try using a mild soap w/ grease buster like dish soap. But try a little area to test out your paint. Some paint will come off in the process. Use a mild sponge and not the abrasive end.

It's easier to just dab some fresh paint on it. Assuming, of course, you have some left over.
