I wouldn't recommend dry cleaning - even the home kits, for fleece. Dry cleaning solution just has an odd smell to it once something's been cleaned numerous times.
Do yourself a favor and only buy GOOD fleece. Like the stuff at REI, Eddie Bauer, etc. I will tell you that Old Navy fleece sucks. Very tempting because it's so cheap, but it pills SO fast. On the other hand, I have a fleece I got from Eddie Bauer 5 Christmases ago that's in great shape. It doesn't look brand new, of course, but it's not pilled at all. Good stuff is worth the extra expense.
If you have cheap/questionable fleece and you don't want it to pill, always wear another shirt under it and just don't wash it that often, and when you do turn it inside out.
All frabrics develop some type of pilling from rubbing that occures during wear from your arms.
Major pilling occures b/c of fabric rubbing against more course fabrics, such as jeans, while being washed. It can also be complicated by rubbing against other fabrics in the dryer.-- and the heat magnifies the effect.
Wash fleece by itself, gentle cycles. Tumble dry with low heat, or hang to dry.
It's best not to put most clothes in the dryer b/c the dryer tends to cause the colors to fade more quickly and it puts a lot of stress on the threads.
Not much about washing it here, but this woman posts a lot on rec.backcountry and knows her stuff about fabrics. all about fleece.
Low quality fleece will pill (surprise).
I never wash it in anything but cold water and also use woolite-type non-detergents. And you shouldn't have to throw it in a dryer, it'll dry quickly. Or at least no-heat.
followed everyone's collective advice and the two that I washed yesterday (both black) came out great.
this is what I did:
- turned them inside out
- washed them in the delicate cycle with woolite with lots of cold water
- threw a downy ball in there with half of the suggested softner
- ran it in the fluff air setting in the drier for 15 minutes
- hung them to dry
no fading, no pilling, no shrinkage, and they smell awesome. I did notice that they bled a lot. if you are going to wash some at home, either wash them individually, or do two of the same color at a time.
