Wash TE wants UT offer

yes, there is a lot of talk right now about him. i believe he visited us last year, but it pretty much seems to require an out-of-stater to take in a camp for us to really get that serious about him.

if he does visit again this spring, that might be enough for us to go hard after him. i hope so. he looks like the real deal. together with an underrated mcfarland, that would make an unbelievable tight end class.

i've been reluctant to mention him here until and unless something more substantive happens. at this point we have to see our chances here as encouraging but nothing more.

by the way, gig harbor is beautiful. when you guys go to seattle, you really need to budget some time on the peninsula. absolutely fantastic place from gig harbor all the way around to neah bay and on down to the hoh rain forest. really, the whole peninsula, interior and coastal is a wonderland.

that makah tribal museum in neah bay is worth the whole visit. they found the remains of a coastal village that had been covered by a mudslide, and the lack of oxygen preserved things from many years ago. great place.

the rain forest is fantastic. check out this pic.

also be sure to drop by the burial place for chief sealth, the man for whom seattle was named, in suquamish.

by the way, before you go to the hoh rain forest, be sure to check out the concept of the nurse log before your go. you'll better understand what you are seeing. once the nurse log is totally gone, there is often a cavity below the tree that you can sit in if you care to.

Sounds like he could be another Jermaine Gresham type player; would be great if he came here.

We went to Olympic last year and thought it was incredible; I now know what they mean when they refer to an "Old Growth Forest". The trees were unbelievable. We also went To Rialto beach and Hurricane Ridge which were both great as well. Stayed as Cresenct Lake Lodge and caught 2 nice rainbows. I had vaguely heard of "Twilight" but didn't know it was such a big deal til we stopped in Forks and Port Angeles.
Want to go back and Steelhead fish; a good reason for considering joining the PAC10.

It would be great if he comes - hopefully he won't fall into the category of the type of guy that Mack has steered clear of in the past few years. The current attitude seems to be that if you're willing to commit to us, fantastic, but if you're going to hold us over a barrel for a year and have one of those signing day circuses, it's likely you're going to get passed over. I think Mack's been trying to avoid another Perriloux fiasco.

I agree, but I prefer it that way. I don't care how good a player is, if he doesn't really want to be a Longhorn, then he will create more problems than he'll solve.

I have no issue with allowing certain players plenty of time to make a decision if they are handling the process with a certain level of maturity. Kids like Devon Kennard and Jordan Hicks did things the right way, and for players like them, I would hope we'd be willing to give them all the time they need to make a decision.

But players who do not express a serious interest, who frequently schedule and then cancel visits, refuse to allow our coaches to visit them in their homes, claim to be interested but then are "recruiting" their friends to some other program ... it's stuff like that we should have no part of. We are better than that, and the players who don't realize it are not worth our time, effort, and resources.

The key thing to me is does he want an offer to commit right away or does he just want an offer to say he got one from us and not really want to come here.

I share your concern, Bill. Texas has reached such a "name brand" status in college football that recruits highly value an offer from Mack even if they don't intend on coming to UT. It's not only a status symbol for them, but (in their minds) it increases their stock value in the eyes of other schools. Throw in the fact that many recruiting services base their rankings, at least in part, on what schools have offered a recruit, and it’s not surprising that more and more out-of-state kids are expressing “interest” in UT.

Fortunately for us, Mack is not easily flattered and guards his scholarship offers carefully. Unlike aggy, which carpet bombs junior high schools, elementary schools, day care centers, and hospital maternity wards with offers in the hopes that some small fraction of recipients will actually accept an offer instead of using it as an insurance policy, toilet paper--or in the case of Corey Nelson, both--Mack has very stringent criteria regarding who will receive the privilege of a Texas offer.

And I'm strangely OK with that. I'm not saying that's the case here--the kid sounds like a real player--but what I am saying is, "In Mack We Trust."

We're supposedly #1 on his list now. I was skeptical until recently. We've got a real shot at this guy, which would be allsome.

Hey, the last tight end prospect from out of state to recruit us turned out to be pretty special.

Yeah, I'm talking about you
, Blaine Irby! Hook 'em and get well soon!

That is a difficult line the coaching staff is forced to walk-some of these recruits want to play you like a Stradivarius, but some of them do want to get away from home for their college experience, and UT would have to be attractive to those players.
UT is in an enviable position of not having to play the games most schools must play with recruits-think how many times they get burned. We only have had a few bad experiences.
On the surface, it seems a little harsh to have the policy requiring an OOS recruit to attend a camp (or other personal visit) at UT to show genuine interest, but I trust Mack's judgment like others on this board. Maybe that is the best policy.
It sure is nice to add a small handful of top national recruits to the annual haul of Texas talent, though. Maybe we should try to gauge genuine interest in a few more of these guys, like this Washington tight end prospect, and broaden our efforts just a small amount.

Wow, tough crowd here. This article should change your mind pretty quick.

Seferian-Jenkins said he has Texas out in front.
"Texas would be at the top even though they haven't offered," Seferian-Jenkins said. "They're pretty far up there and they have a really good program. I'm talking to coach (Bruce) Chambers a lot now. It's really exciting for them to recruit me and they have a really good school and they run a similar offense to my high school that I run right now so it would be an easy transition for me."

So what will it take for Seferian-Jenkins to get a Texas offer?

"I'll get offered if I keep doing the things I'm supposed to be doing - keep working hard in school because I know the coaches there are big into that and just giving them good film," he said.

"I know I have good film because I haven't given anyone my junior highlight tape yet so I'm going to give them my first junior highlight tape and hopefully they'll like it. I'm going to do that on Friday and it might result in an offer if I go down and visit. We'll see. I'm excited."

Seferian-Jenkins is a 6-foot-7, 250-pound tight end from Gig Harbor, Wash., who said it would almost be a "dream scenario" if Texas offered. Rivals.com considers Seferian-Jenkins one of the top tight ends in the 2011 class after he caught 62 passes for 1,153 yards and 11 touchdowns last season.

He said recently at the Eugene NIKE Camp that the Longhorns had emerged as one of his favorites after assistant coach Major Applewhite contacted him.

Seferian-Jenkins visited Texas between his freshman and sophomore years but it was much too early to get seriously recruited at the time. The Washington recruit was clearly the top prospect at the Eugene NIKE Camp and used his size and underrated footwork to dominate smaller cornerbacks during one-on-ones.

In part because of tight ends coach Brian White, Florida was presumed to be the frontrunner for Seferian-Jenkins, who also had UCLA and Cal high on his list, but now Texas has leapfrogged all those schools and has claimed the top spot.

Seferian-Jenkins' complete top eight is Texas, Washington, UCLA, Cal, USC, Alabama, Florida and LSU. Those are the only programs he will consider from here until he makes his commitment.

"I narrowed it down because those are the best schools for me," Seferian-Jenkins said. "I chose the top eight schools that would benefit me in the long run and help me become a better football player and give me a good academic chance."

**** it. I don't care if the kid plays the staff like a Les Paul.

give him an offer.

Nothing about this kid says "Perri-loser". I don't see that we have a thing to lose by offering him, and given the love he's showing us, I see we might gain the stud TE we've wanted since David Thomas graduated.

I don't see much downside in offering him. The offer/commit ratio that people talk about is more PR fluff than a real recruiting goal. If he seems interested why not offer him if he meets the non-football criterion. Unless he is angling for a fifth star from Rivals I don't see how he raises his recruiting profile much with a Texas offer.

We are not actively recruiting another TE so we would not run the risk of losing another prospect at that position if Seferian-Jenkins didn't commit in the end. Other than Brown/Green, I think Josh Turner is probably the only other guy we would take over someone like S-J. If we don't get him I think S-J would be a better take than a lesser CB prospect or Quincy Russell.

If you go back in time even further than Scaife, Pat Fitzgerald was an out-of-state tight end who did pretty well for us. Seems like we have no other choice but to take this guy from Washington!

Well coolhorn I am convinced we have nothing to lose by giving him an offer now. The worse that can happen is he can decide to say no but if yes we got another good tight end. From what I have heard he is worth the chance.

On paper this kid looks like a freak. But OOS prospects are rare on the 40. I think there might be something here if this kids has verbally stated he wants a Texas offer. Why? Does he love Texas or does he just want an over from as many big name programs as possible.

3d, if i understand correctly, as-j has been to see us twice already. that's not the m.o. of the doily maker.

Any news on how the phone call went with this guy today?

I hope Mack and Co. dispatched scantily clad women to his house to seduce themselves in his kitchen while they conversed...it's the only way we have a chance with any of these guys.
