Yeah, terrible crowd overall. I think it was due in part to Okie State not being in the tournament, but I would have thought OU would have had more fans as well, considering they were the top team in their pool. Hopefully the Big 12 will wise up and move the tournament back to Texas.
Perhaps OU fans were merely looking into the future and didn't feel like attending a tournament they knew they wouldn't win, thus saving money to attend a super regional they didn't deserve to host?
#1 There were very few people there. A local sports show host said that OK City was reconsidering hosting the tourney.
#2 Parking was not a problem. We parked (and tailgated) in the garage behind left field. Could view the previous or later games with a few adult beverages and sausuage wraps. Not much unlike other Horns Fans tailgates.
#3 That being said, I am tired of OK City. I think it is time to move the Big 12 tourney around to some double and triple A parks outside of OK City.
I think that Bricktown is a great venue to host the tournament at, however, it's just in the wrong town. I do love the ballpark there and everything. I just wish it was in Dallas.
The OU fans just do not care about Baseball. When my relatives from Oklahoma visited for my wedding during the OU series last month all they wanted to talk about was Stoops comments about the asterix Mack Brown put on the conference football title.
OKC is a great place to have it but I would think attendance might dictate a change. Those that stayed at the Hampton and on the field side said being able to look out the window and watch evening games was great. Plus you just walk out the door and your at the field. If staying downtown no car is needed. That is really great for the players wanting to go back to other games, or even out to eat. They can walk where ever they want.
I am biased b/c I live up in Edmond, but the OKC venue is really convenient and well done. Frisco and Dell do not have nearly the convenient access to food and hotels, and I am not sure the fans would turn out any better at either venue. OSU not being in the tournament really hurt b/c they are big baseball fans. BlowU does not really care about baseball. Heck, I know Texas, BU, A&M and Tech grads living in Frisco who would not even realize the Big XII tournament was in Frisco much less go to games. In OKC it is an event.
While I can't argue about the OU baseball fans, I honestly think the Big 12's decision to not allow beer sales have hurt attendence. Especially at afternoon games not involving local schools.
It used to be common for people from all over town slipping out to go sit at the ball game and drink some beer. Now, I don't know anyone who just randomly goes.
They should sell beer at college games, period. It's time to stop being so puritanical about it. Check ID's, limit purchase to one per person, and move on. And it would make money, too. I'd much rather buy a $6 beer (or 3) than a $5 coke.
Memorial Stadium games are the silliest. They don't sell beer to the general population, but if you are a member of the End Zone Club (which anyone can be), no problem. It's like buying booze in a dry county. Or Utah.
I agree that Bricktown is convenient ... which is irrelevant when there are all of 47 people there.
It's a bit contradictory to talk about convenience when no one is showing up. Attendance at day games will always be an issue, regardless of where you have the tournament. That's just the nature of the beast. But attendance at all of these games was embarrassing.
I honestly think it would help if the Big 12 would get on the ball about TV contracts during the regular season. There is absolutely no reason why there couldn't have been a series on TV every weekend. If other conferences around the country can do it, so can the Big 12. That might help to drum up more interest for the sport among casual fans who are not already going to the games.
I don't really think it is contradictory, but point well taken. There were other factors regarding low attendance such as Nebraska not being in the tournament. Without question NU has the biggest baseball following of the north schools and Baylor's dreadful finish hurt BU support as well. Mizzouri, KU and KSU don't travel for baseball. I was at the Saturday and Sunday games and outside of the Texas fans, fan support was certainly lacking. The economic situation also factors into the equation.
I would love to see it at the Dell Diamond. You would have a lot of Texas, Baylor and A&M fans go in for that game. Baseball is just a bigger deal in Texas IMO.
The two years in Arlington the total attendence was 150,196 in 2002 and 125,628 in 2004. In comparison, the highest OKC has acheived since 2002 is 86,629 in 2003. This year the attendence may challenge the 1997 OKC low the first year which was 56,742. It's time for a move.
The box score posted on the big12sports.com website lists 5,316 as the number of people at the Big-12 championship. After watching all those empty seats during the telecast, most of the 5,316 had to be no-shows.
